I would really like to see Roll20 have the ability to "translate" different languages (from readable to gibberish, and vice versa) in the chat log for each player depending on their ability to speak that language. Example Uses A wizard asks their bat familiar if the upper room of a tower is empty or not. As speaking to a familiar is auditory, the rest of the party would hear the sounds of speech, but would fail to understand what is being said. A party is talking to a silver dragon, and only the cleric understands what the dragon is saying. A group of adventurers capture a goblin and attempt to interrogate it. However the goblin only replies in a single language. How many people in the party can understand it? Mechanics This feature would take the text typed by a player and scramble the letters/numbers into something different to appear on the screen of another player who's character can't read said language. A excellent tool could be a Lorem Ipsum generator, which is explained here. This could be expanded upon to include different languages. Each language could be identified in a chat syntax command such as: /L1 Hello, world! /L2 The world can't understand you... /L27 Can anyone show me where the bathroom is? /Lorc Can we eat it? /Lelf This doesn't sparkle with me... This could be contained in a single toolbox/window where every language is listed along with its chat log syntax command. The list would be populated by the GM, or by any/all players with GM approval. With the list being player-populated, it could be as simple/minimal or as long/inclusive as the players want. The toolbox would be an easy reference guide for smooth and uninterrupted game play (ie- a location viewable simultaneously with the chat log.) It would also have easy access check boxes to toggle on/off individual character knowledge (facilitating various magical aids mid-game.) As someone who uses the chat log to roleplay extensively, I would greatly appreciate the ability to incorporate various languages into my roleplaying!
