Is there no way to guarantee a dynamic lighting line will not group with others?

I want to create a temporary line where the players can't see through a line until I do something. I don't understand why this can't be reliable. I need to be able to have players see something with a dynamic lighting line on it, then I need to be able to select it and delete it once they can see past it. I'm running into specific cases where one line, even if I use a different color or hop through 20 different hoops it still glues itself to nearby dynamic lighting lines and is beyond extremely frustrating.
What do you mean "glues itself to nearby lines"? Shapes don't do that. If you mean when you select it, it's selecting more than what you want, that happens when you have a shape inside a shape. For example, if you make a little square of light-blocking inside a bigger square of light-blocking, and then you do that mass-select where you click and drag to grab the small object, it will consider all the "blank" area inside the big object to be selectable also, and select both. You need to manually click the object you want to select to delete it individually. Sometimes, if it's small, you may need to zoom in to be able to grab it.

Hi, Bryan. I do not know how to replicate your problem and I do not seem to experience it. Here is what I do, maybe this can help? I go into the Dynamic Lighting Overlay and then select Polygon/Line tool left click once to establish where the line is to being left click once in a different spot to establish where the line is to end Right click once anywhere to complete that segment and only have that one, line or set of lines I just tested it now, and the separate lines do not merge and they may be selected to delete one at a time. I hope that helps. ~barbara
That happens sometimes, other times if you have a wrapping around line, and then try to cross it over with another line. That's when I run into the issue.

hmm, like this? Not sure what a "wrapping line is... like the green one here?

I'm loading up a couple videos to help out also. Youtube is going slow right now.

Metroknight, Video is awesome! I don't know how to capture and make a video for youtube. Great idea! Bryan, I keep trying to get them to merge but I can't. So, try my instructions and the Video Metroknight makes. Well, wait... they will join if I do not right click and stop the polygon/line.

Those vids are just quick toss togethers that try to cover what was being asked and you are correct about the right click. You can change your color while still continuing the line unbroken. Bryan, I tried to duplicate your problem and the only way that I could do it is the way Barbara did by not right clicking then starting a new line. Can you supply a screen shot of it from your perspective?

Bryan , could you please supply a screenshot of your problem? - Gauss
Sure, now that my campaign finished.
So first picture, I try to click on the red line on the dynamic lighting layer, it does this massive selection box. I've tried using ungroup (they were never grouped, I just created this red line 2 seconds before I tried to select it). Obviously by the second picture, as everything is selected if I try to move it, everything moves. This makes using this layer with any lighting that changes extremely difficult and mind numbingly painful.
All I did was create dynamic lighting lines all over my map, click, then right click all over my map. Then later I went to add ones of the same color, and ran into this, even tried different colors, it groups a random amount of nearby pieces. At first I thought it was ones that were done before doing a right click. But seeing as if I add new ones later it still does it, yeah extremely bothersome.

Hey, so I know this forum is a few months old, but found myself here because I was experiencing the same issue. This "gluing", or in my case, difficulty selecting lines/shapes within surrounding, or larger, lines/shapes happened a lot when I was using different colors to make "doors" or "secret passageways". My issues arose from not getting the mouse cursor to recognize a specific dynamic lighting piece while hovering my pointer over it. I then had to use the select box (click and drag) to "grab" the line. No matter how small I made this box it still seemed to grab a large portion of the map lines/shapes at the same time and my "door" became permanently attached to other drawings. After a lot of frustration and searching I found that it matters a lot what level of zoom you're currently on. As I spend a lot of time at 50% or less when building maps, I never tried changing the zoom to see if it affected line/shape selection. It Does. I don't know for sure where the "sweet spot" is, but 100% seemed to work for most pieces. I was able to select my "doors" pretty much every time. For example, while in play I need to zoom in to 100% remove a door my PCs walk through, then zoom back out to whatever % fits the situation. I don't know if this will be helpful, but I figured I would try and contribute to the unanswered question.
I have just finished working on this problem. Another solution is to only draw one line at a time, then end the line and start a new one at the same point for each line. It is slower but the problem with not being able to select the door ways is because when you draw multipile line with the polygon tool it makes the polygon even if it is invisable and when you try to select the door you get the polygon instead. My method of drawing a line and then ending it with the polygon tool seems to have corrected the issue of not being able to select doors.

Update: there appears to be a bug regarding selecting lines on the DL layer. At zoom levels other than 100% it becomes harder to select lines. A bug report has been filed. Here is a link to some workarounds: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/530679/unable-to-select-vectors-in-dynamic-lighting-layer#post-531113
