Guild of Roleplayers Recruiting Players, DMs for 2013 Campaign Roster

Hi, I'm Ardis Foxx, and I'm the Portal Commander of the Virtual Table RPG Portal. What's a portal? It's a a section of the gaming guild Eternal Vigilance- a section dedicated to organised play of tabletop roleplaying games over the internet. We're essentially a large community of friends who love playing games and teaching D&D to anyone willing to learn. The friendships you make in Eternal Vigilance are like those you get in your local gaming group- they last. About the Virtual Table RPG Portal Overview The VTRPG Portal was founded in November 2011. We are mainly focused on the D&D 4th Edition ruleset, but we also play other systems such as Pathfinder. We use the virtual table at http://roll20.net/ to host these games online. Goals The motivating factor of the portal is to ensure the best play experience possible for an internet-based tabletop RPG. We seek to hold a high standard of excellence in creating, maintaining and running campaigns. Our goal is also to propagate- using a mentoring system we help new DM's every step of the way along their journey to becoming confident and successful DM's in their own right. For a detailed look at how we achieve this, please read the VT RPG Portal Charter. http://www.evcitadel.com/community/threads/official-vt-rpg-charter.27135/ Why Join? Our portal offers more than any single gaming group can. We have a dedicated center of leadership, experienced Dungeon Masters, and expertly crafted campaigns. We are driven to make the game a success, and to elevate each member to a place where they can run their own campaign if they so choose. If you need advice on how to play or DM a game, we have the knowledge base to make it great. No matter what game we’re playing, Eternal Vigilance has always been dedicated to maintaining a friendly, mature, active community; we’re a home away from home. We’re as dedicated to our games as we are to our community, and we believe that if things are built on a solid foundation, they have every chance to exceed expectation. Although we realize that nothing is ever perfect, we know that the ability to change and evolve is important, which is why we are a democratic guild. Everyone has a voice that will be heard. These are the values we bring to tabletop gaming. If you're interested in joining or you just want to take a closer look, visit our website at http://www.evcitadel.com/community/threads/how-to-join-vt-rpg-applicants-read-this.27274/.
Thank you. Very polished and professional.

Looks neat, think I'll take a look.
Same here, I'll take a look as I'm looking forward to DM-ing, but still a n00b :p And the site does indeed look neat and quite professional.
Command and Staff was never my bag. Little too much like a job for me. Wish you well though. However, it looks like a solid thumbs up if you are just going to play.
Great to see applicants visiting our forum almost immediately after I put this recruitment thread up. That's why I love the Roll20 community, full of such nice and enthusiastic roleplayers. :)
Very well done, i would be interested but i play 3.5 ed of D&D, do you know of any groups that do still play 3.5?
If I could find a proper dm for 3.5 I would gladly round up a group
i wanna play 3.5 as well

Drop a post in the Games Seeking Players thread to see if anyone is interested. http://www.evcitadel.com/community/forums/games-seeking-players.303/
I run a 3.5 Greyhawk game that meet on d20 at 8.00 PM UK time, 3PM eastern and 12 noon western time. This is the link for it: https://app.roll20.net/join/47136/-wlPQg
Matthew do you have skype or anything so i can send you my character sheet?
I'm all for joining! I've DMed one game of Star Wars d20 version and Co-DMed a Pathfinder game, but I still need help as to how DM as well as how roll20 works.
Sounds good Dante. If you are having trouble finding your way, try this link. Http://www.evcitadel.com/community/threads/how-to-join-vt-rpg-applicants-read-this.27274/
Someone sent me a PM about my signature image in my first post above, and I thought I would paste my reply here in case anyone else was interested. I create the signature images myself for VT RPG Portal members when they successfully join the portal. The applicant selects a few images they want for their signature (usually a nice background, a character they're currently playing, and a secondary image), and I work a little photoshop magic with the template I created. Here are a few of my favourites:
Well, top marks again dude. Looks like a good pairing w/Roll20. Little vanilla round heeyah.
I read the charter and I requested to join, I'll be under Dante Abrax of course. Oh and thanks for the link, that REALLY helped me out :D

Thank you Ardis F. for the reply. I was more implying to find a dm not host one, i am still alil shaky at dming have not done it for quite a few years. That would probably be something i would be interested in as well. Some fine tuning never hurt anyone. I will how ever be looking at that site you linked me, so thank you for that as well.

Oh I know what you meant Tyson, what I was getting at is, maybe you could put a post in Games Seeking Players asking for a DM to run a 3.5e game. There is definitely interest for 3.5e at the moment. :)
I saw this and it piqued my interest, so I went ahead and applied.
D&D Game for Applicants Jan 27, 2013 01:00 PM +13:00 NZDT http://www.evcitadel.com/community/threads/jan-27-2013-d-d-game-for-new-applicants-teamspeak-and-roll20.31677/ I'll be running one-shots for our new members in the coming months. The next session is sheduled for 7pm EST Saturday 26th Jan. This is 1pm Sunday for me in New Zealand. These games will be fairly cookie cutter- for expediency I will be premaking the characters and handing them out to players before the game via PM. It will be vanilla D&D 4e. Even with premade characters and little custom content, you of course can still expect the same level of flavour, action, plot and interesting NPCs as I usually promise :)
I am one of the players from EV and will be trying my hand at running a game. My first game is a 1st level D&D 4e one shot. The sign ups are at http://www.evcitadel.com/community/index.php?threads/31688/. I hope to run some Edge of the Empire down the line.

Friendly bump! I signed up with this guild the other day, a very friendly and warm bunch of people. I am really impressed!

We have more trial comes coming this week, see our website for details.
Hi all, EV Campaign Administrator here. I currently run one of the community's Pathfinder campaigns. We're going on week 15, and it's been an exciting journey. For further description of my campaign click here . I highly recommend Eternal Vigilance's VTRPG portal for all your online role-playing habits. It's a very involved group of helpful members who want to do one thing - play games better. As a DM, I can testify that I have personally benefited from the abundant creativity and feedback that the community provides. I've learned new tools, tips, and tricks that I utilize in each of my sessions, and as a result, I feel much more confident hosting my sessions. Believe me, my players can tell..., and they even paid for a subscription to Roll20 because they liked the campaign so much! It has only been about six months, but EV has made all the benefits of online tabletop play come to life. Better people, better plots, and a better platform thanks to Roll20. I hope you decide to give EV a try because it has made my efforts at D&D the most successful they have been in years. Happy Gaming, Brett
@Brett I'm all about accountability and organization, but even the most lassez faire, slack GM is already appreciably tasked, and said GM type is even less likely to engage via EV. EV just seems to add to an already appreciable workload. In other words, it seems more like a job. Any prospective fixes to that? Just clicking the site gave me flashbacks of staff meetings, mission d&p....sheesh. Tylenol time.
@T M. I agree with you. GMing has a laundry list of responsibilities, and it can be overwhelming for some, if not most, before you even add the idea of participating in or helping to build a community. However, lets take a step back for a second. Like any community, EV has the potential to essentially become a part-time job. Staff meetings, moderating, restructuring, upkeep, and design... the list goes on and on. While I'm sure EV would be happy for you or anybody to participate in all or even one of these capacities, the reality is that many members don't think twice about what goes on behind the scenes. They are gamers, using EV as a wholesome community to make friends, share ideas, and enhance their own digital experience. So back to your point, I do not believe EV adds to the workload of a GM (or any other member) unless you consciously make it into a 'job.' Perhaps, the only fix is to help redesign the website to make it more attractive and less intimidating to potential members..., but I guess that's kind of a catch 22. ;) In short, I think the benefits of the community and access to its helpful and friendly members far outweigh the modicum of additional effort to sign up and be involved. Try participating in or running one of our one-shots, and then you decide how much of a priority you want to make EV. Please note: I speak only from my perspective and not on behalf of all Eternal Vigilance.
@Brett: As a player, it looks like a go. However, if anyone bothers to read the terms of being a GM, unless this is just rah speak / lip service, then it IS like a job as described. Just by the way it is structured, the staff college language etc.... you tracking? If anything, more of the load should be placed on the PLAYERS. The deficit is always towards the GM end. Most everyone is behind playing. Facts and assumptions. I'm sure EV is doing, and will do quite well. Improve/sustain wise, it can always get better.
@T M. Although I defer to Ardis Foxx in my judgment here, I think the terms of being a GM are there to ensure the quality of VT gaming for our players. We want committed GMs who will show up, engage the players, and actively provide updates to encourage new players to join the community. Naturally, the community and its members are always in need of improvement, and I'm happy you mentioned GM terms. Perhaps, this will be looked at in further detail going forward. If you're really interested in GMing and are interested in participating in EV, please send me a PM, and I can explain in further detail how roll20, EV, and other resources can make GMing easier.
Thanks. I get the intent, and the execution is good from what I can tell. Bottom line, if it is possible to restructure a bit, you may get more. Maybe not though. Judgment call. Keeping quality while adding reinforcements, bit of a trick that.
I applied, hopefully I can find a pathfinder game to fit my schedule

Judgment call. Keeping quality while adding reinforcements, bit of a trick that. Let me chime in on this discussion :) I make a point not to create work for anyone in VT RPG. I create the website artwork for our portal, the signatures, pen the charter and any other documentation, create guides, and endeavour to find content and features to make VT RPG a splendid place for my players and DM's alike. There are only a few points of interest that my Campaign Administrators must follow for my peace of mind in ensuring the best possible start to their campaign. These are not hurdles to leap over or mountains to climb, but simple steps such as the creation of a homepage for their campaign at Epic Words to making XP and loot tracking easy, as well as somewhere to have session recaps if they wish to write them. Here is my example campaign homepage. http://www.epicwords.com/in_the_dragons_shadow I co-create all the visible content on these pages and it's very important to me that these campaigns stand out and endure. I strive to ensure that my Campaign Administrators and their campaigns are a success, and to that end, almost all of the "admin work" involved in the VT RPG machine is on my shoulders. I'm a father of 3 and a very busy man at this stage in my life, so I can't afford large blocks of time to run more than one campaign myself. To that end, I now focus my efforts in enabling other, less experienced DMs to become campaign-running rock stars. I hope that answers some of your concerns. :)
i don't know if im looking in the right area on the site "games seeking players and event directory" but there doesn't seem to really be a lot of action
Justin l. said: i don't know if im looking in the right area on the site "games seeking players and event directory" but there doesn't seem to really be a lot of action The Event Directory is for one shots, and Games Seeking Players is for advertising open slots for any game, although these discussions can sometimes take place in other threads when the topic comes up. Currently there are 5 games in the pipeline in these threads, including a Dragon Age game (recently featured on TableTop). There are 2 active campaigns, down from last year's 7, which is one of the reasons we're recruiting for the new season.
Two new campaigns have been posted. "Tales of the Chaos Scar"- a 4th edition D&D campaign exploring the troubled Chaos Scar setting , and "Star Wars: Edge of the Empire"- a Star Wars campaign using the fantastic new system from Fantasy Flight Games. Come over to VT RPG and check them out. :) http://www.evcitadel.com/community/forums/vt-rpg-general-discussion-public.169/
Been hanging out with this community for about a month now and can say they're all awesome dudes from what I've met. Would recommend you checking them out for VT games and some viduya games as well.
Here is the roll20 post for my Edge of the Empire game. This is a great group of players that I have been a part of for about a year. They are friendly, helpful, and fun to play with. I recommend checking EV out.
We've had a great response from the Roll20 community so far. If you're on the fence or you've just found this thread, check us out at the link below. Aint no harm in looking :) http://www.evcitadel.com/community/forums/vt-rpg-general-discussion-public.169/
Man, I am LOVING D&D Next right now. Barbarian, Ranger, Monk, Druid all in the last playtest packet... although I long for a Bard, this druid will do just fine! Anyone else keen for a bash of this system?
Hey Ardis, you mentioned that your guild teaches anyone willing to learn, could your members take on the same project i have? I have been providing a community service all by myself for a few weeks now. I created the Campaign " Teaching Beginners D&D 3.5 ". I am getting such an overwhelming response that i feel bad for not being able to run a game for the 10+people who apply daily to join it. At first i put no limits to the number players, in two weeks i had over 100 applicants, seeing as i could only DM for 6 people at a time and a lot of those applicants didnt show up i decided to start over and create a new game each week exclusive to the people i would introduce for the single session. All it takes is to initiate a one-session game to teach players how to create a sheet properly and then introduce them to combat and roleplay, after which they can take up the game forward themselves. I can even show you how i set up the game with easy to follow instructions for them to create their own sheets and provide a link to a document with the text i used for it. Please contact me.
@KKDragonLord - Sounds intriguing. I might be able to help out with a couple of those, if you're looking for people. @Ardis - I'll be checking out your site, as well.

Hey that's a good idea you have there. We're actually running something similar but for DMs called "So You Think You Can Run?". Right now we're focusing on increasing our number of DMs because like you, we're faced with overwhelming player applications and we need folks to step up as DMs to fill this much needed role. Roll20 and EV are alike in that regard - not enough players willing to DM.
