Player and DM Rating System

Those of us that have been on roll20 a long time can attest to the fact that there are alot of people with bad game etiquette and trolls on this site. It would be nice if there was a rating system and review for players and DMs so if you're looking at a game to join or a player to invite you can get an idea of who you are about to deal with.

I've had to learn what the warning flags are for power players, trolls, and other unwanted types. I don't like having to regard every new player wish suspicion, I would rather be able to look at a rating or comments left by players and DMs of past games to see if it's a good person or not.

I do not have an actual link at hand, but this kind of suggestion has been made in the past.
Though, what solution would you propose to stop said power players, troll and other unwanted players to use this feature and place false ratings?
make a single rating from a player have a very small effect on the overall rating of a player. Make reviews permanent on a player's profile so if a player is complained once about trolling it will always be there and with a date the review was made. If a player has a bad review that's over a year old then it's likely they have changed and a DM could give them a chance or avoid them if the review is recent.

I just made a suggestion about this. I didnt notice someone else had. My main issue is people ghosting and not letting others know when they can't make it to a session.

I figured I wasn't the first to suggest this. I have in my requirements at the LFG page that if they don't show up they will be kicked. It is a problem, but immature people and power players are a cancer on roll20. Every DM has had to deal with them.

Reddit has a decent system for rating users. No rating system would be without flaws. Yes people would get a bunch of friends and drive their ratings up, but how often are they going to make a new account because bad reviews are permanent on their profile? Users with no ratings and reviews would be regarded with suspicion as bad players trying to play even if they are new players. Having good reviews and ratings will be a must to get into a game. It will help the DMs pick the best players and Players will have to make themselves more desirable to compete with each other for games.

I understand where you come from and being a GM myself I agree to that there needs to be a method of filtering unwanted players.
However, for suggestions like this to pass you would need to show a feasible answer to the following questions/situations:

Who would be able to vote for whom? (Only those that have been in the same game within x amount of days, etc.)
How are new gamers supposed to gain reputation?
What are you going to do with buddies that rate each other up? (This is a thing in reddit too!)
How would you estimate the comment/rating was correct? (What stops someone from giving you a permanent "Troll" mark?)

These are off the top of my head. And even if they had a very minor impact, it will not change the overall ratio.
While everyone can agree to leavers being bad players, power gamers are only subjective. It might come a bit strange to you but I allow min-maxers as that is also a form of playing the game. Nothing has stopped those players from being excellent roleplayers and having in-depth character development.
I digress but my point is that we could start an argument as to what degree of power gaming is allowed or not because it is a purely subjective matter. What stops others from rating others based on their own sense of morality or point of view, etc?

Sorry to burst your bubble but this causes more trouble than anything, unless you find an objectively good methodology for rating people that does not allow room for subjective misbehavior. If you do manage to formulate something like this you will not only have my vote but the vote of other colleagues of mine and all of the GMs that are plagued by unpleasant players.

Also, if you kick someone from your group, what's to stop them from making numerous accounts and downvoting you into oblivion?

well that is just asinine - the thought that someone would do that, and the fact that he or she would waste that much effort and Time to do something so asinine.
Thank you, I am still working on answers to the issues raised by all of you. I think if it works for Reddit then a system for roll20 can work all the same.

I've been thinking about making a guide for new DMs on how to avoid bad players, but a rating system would aid in avoiding the ostracizing of players by age or other means that the guide would do.

Allowing people to ascribe a rating to other people is not something we really want on Roll20, even though I understand why it would be useful to weed out toxicity in peer-driven games like tabletop. We don't foresee this feature being on our radar for a long time, at least until we can figure out the ethical implications of it. This type of feature can and has been very easily abused before.

On toxic users though, that is why our dev and mod team is here. We absolutely want to weed out toxic users and abusive users but rating is not the way to do that. Reporting toxic behavior is. Please report any users that violate our code of conduct and if you don't see a report button on the relevant interaction, please email us at team@roll20.net

I hope you understand our firm stance on this. I'll be closing this thread and releasing your votes.
