Torchbearer Intro (Under the House of the Three Squires)

Looking for 2-5 players to try a few sessions (possibly more) of Torchbearer , a new game by Burning Wheel HQ. New players are ABSOLUTELY welcome. This is a very new game system, and I'm expecting to teach much of the game as we play it. I've scheduled the first session for tomorrow afternoon EDT (I know, short notice), but can maybe be flexible on timing depending on how much interest I can drum up for this game. My listing: https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/131366/to... A nice intro article on Torchbearer: http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2013/04/15/in... And, a little "flavor": Our world is crumbling at the edges, pressed in on all sides by the savage and pitiless darkness—monsters and other evils that prey upon light and life. Most of your people huddle behind walls, convincing themselves that your civilization will persevere and conquer this land. But you don’t have that luxury. There’s naught for you in this world save blood and treasure. You’ve no inheritance, no dowry, no rich uncle, not even a job. You’ve come to this inn because you have no other options but to make your own fortune in this damned world. And if that means delving into ruins of a long dead civilization and slaying a dragon or two, so be it. At least you’ll live it up before the end. And who knows? Maybe you’ll carve out a stronghold of light against the vast, weird dark after all. So you’re at this inn, looking for prospects, looking for a few companions to back you up, looking for a way out of this two‑bit town…
tommorrow sounds great to me i like the intro gives of a sense of peril anything else i need to do/know?
I'm interested, let me know if you're going to run it.
Hi, joseph. A quick google search of torchbearer rpg should give you whatever basics you might be interested in, if you're wanting to learn more about the system. Torchbearer is somewhat different from many of the "mainstream" RPGs out there right now, in that it actively engages players in a way that encourages "role play rather than roll play", so come prepared for a more story-based game than a rules and square-counting one. I will provide pre-gens for the fist session, but if players want to roll up their own after that, we can definitely do that. Inventory and resource management is also a key part of the game. Torchbearer treats light sources as an expendable resource, and definitely also has a bit of a survival horror vibe to it (especially when your last torch sputters out when you're deep, deep underground). It's a game about making hard choices and describing your character's actions, not just moving minis around on a map and min/maxing stats. If that intrigues you, this is going to be a great game. If not, you have been warned. :)
Hi, Mark. I'm shooting for a session tomorrow afternoon (10/27) at 1pm EDT. If that's too short notice for you, but you're still interested, let me know, since I may just do multiple one-shots or short runs of the game for interested beginners.
when exactly would we get together besides tomorrow of courser
I can probably run a game every week or two on Sunday afternoons (same time as tomorrow), or work something else out, depending on other players' schedules.
alright i can probably do it
I am not necessarily counting on this becoming a long-term campaign, but I would absolutely be willing to do that if we ended up with good group of players who would like to make that happen.
well i really hope this thing grows just judging by the intro it sounds wonderful
besides that do i need to create a character? and how exactly would i do that the words on the character sheet are to blurred to read
I'll have some pre-generated characters available for the first session, to allow us to jump directly into the game. I'll send them out to all of the players before we start. After the first session, once everyone's had a chance to see how the game system works, players can roll up their own characters or continue to use the pre-gens if they wish.
well then i geuss its goodbye till tomorrow unless theres anything you still need to tell me
What type of system is it? Whats the Setting?
Hi, Michael. Torchbearer is a new system -- the books are not even in the stores yet (but you can find the PDF on DriveThruRPG). It's based on the Mouse Guard rules system, but not the Mouse Guard setting. The setting is fairly generic fantasy (elves, dwarves, orcs, magic, etc). There are a lot of things that make Torchbearer different from most RPGs you'll find out there right now. It's very "describe to live" based, but still has enough rules to prevent it from being "just a bunch of talking". It has game mechanics which requires players to regularly make tough choices, but also prevents bad or failed rolls from dead-ending the game. The game's strength is dungeon crawling/exploration, and the adventure I plan to run immediately puts the characters underground, dealing with choices in the dark... and the consequences of those choices. If you're not sure if it's for you or not, try it out. It's definitely something different than what most D&D players are used to seeing.
al my cousin and his friend might join
Ok. I do not have the character sheets ready to send out yet, but I will have them in time for the game tomorrow. The game will work best with 3-4 players (other than the GM, me). We can go with as few as 2 or as many as 5, but 3-4 is optimal.
I know nothing about the system but from reading a little about it has perked my interest. Sunday afternoons work well for me, so I'll give it a try.
Hi, Breetai (wow, I have not seen that name in forever!). Please post in my game to request to be added: https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/131366/to... Michael P.: Ditto. Thanks. https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/131366/to...
I would love to join you guys, and tomorrow works pretty well for me. Ive read a little into it and it seems very intriguing.
Joey, please post in my game thread so that I can approve you into the game. Looks like we might fill this game up faster than I thought.
I tried that but everytime I click on it, it says 'Not Authorized'
I'll PM you a link.
I guess the correct approach is: Please PM me for a link. We're already pretty close to a full game already, so if you're interested in getting in, here are your options: 1. PM me like ASAP! 2. I could probably run another session of this. If there's enough interest, I can probably put together another session.
You can search Torchbearer on looking for a group and it should be the first one.
