Magic is dying, and the Magus is dying with it. We travel together to the realm of Umbra where magic was born. "Fall of Magic is a collaborative storytelling game where we play a group of travelers in the company of the Magus. On the way, we’ll encounter strange hosts, fantastic places, and perilous choices as we play to discover who our characters are, how they relate, and how our journey changes them." The Game Fall of Magic supplies evocative names, illustrations, and story prompts to guide its players on their journey to Umbra. The overall tone lends itself to a kind of somber introspection, though the characters themselves are free to provide some levity. Unlike many other games, there is no GM (though I'm happy to act as a facilitator for new players). We'll all share the same narrative authority in creating scenes, participating in each other's scenes, and asking questions about the details that interest us. On that note, Hilary McNaughton's  review provides some pertinent words of caution for people who are more used to playing combat simulators at the table: Fall of Magic runs on cooperation and collaboration. If you find that unappealing you may find the entire game a frustrating experience. Likewise, the game and its mechanics exist to support you in telling a story. If you’re waiting for the Real Game to kick in, and for numbers to crunch and stats to optimize, you’ll be disappointed. This is also a game that really does require player buy-in in terms of both sustained attention and working with other players’ ideas. This isn’t a game where you can zone out until it’s your turn; it requires all players at all times. The Time We'll play this coming Thursday (2016-01-19), starting at 11 a.m. PST and ending at 3 p.m., with three five-minute breaks. The Players I'd like three other players to join me for this one-shot. No previous gaming experience is required, but I do ask that you read the  rules ahead of time. (They're only seven pages long and include examples of play.) If you have a bit of time to spare, you can also watch the one-shots from the  Roll20 Games Master Series and the  Roll20 Guest Series . We'll use Roll20's voice chat to communicate in English if possible. If the native voice chat does not work for us, I would prefer to use Curse Voice as a backup, but I'm willing to use Google Hangouts instead. A Note About "Creativity" A common concern people have about this game is that they'll draw a complete blank on their turn, or that they'll contribute something boring and cliché. Don't worry. As long as you follow the rules and respect other players' contributions, you're golden. Just say what comes to mind, and feel free to ask for help and suggestions as needed. Creating your scenes may feel stilted and uncomfortable at first, but you'll have plenty of opportunities to try again as the game goes on. Humans are storytellers by nature, and Fall of Magic is designed to bring out that storyteller in everyone. Interested in playing? Have some questions?
