Taken from Torhild's book of Saga's Page 1 The companions Upon ancient stone The party did come With heroic intent back by steel and wit Many races united one goal was sited To over come this great volcano would take the truest grit Grubar the great a towering sight With spear and muscle would dominate any fight Winds spoke to him secrets and tricks So trembled the foes of this mighty man To crush and dominate would be his singular plan Snapping his foes as would an ogre with sticks Jacob the stalwart a figure of faith To turn all his foes be them skeleton or wraith With Helm as his eyes his sight will not fail His determination and bravey cannot be met To push back the hordes an easy won bet Although clad in armour his belief stronger than chainmail Torvald the strong a dwarf with no peer Striking terror in the hearts of those with no fear! His axe held high ready to strike them down Always ready to charge into the fight so real All companions know he is ready to kill steal His truest love the beer in which he could drown Arien the Big cheese though small in size His arcane powers has won him many a prize A summoner of great power rendering his foes placid Quick of foot and thought impulsive to the end Once set on a path he rarely will bend Friend and foe alike have suffered to his Acid. (Notes on the bottom of the page talk about a drum being beat to keep pace of the song a drawing of the suggested drum can be seen)
Do not forget your roots.                                                                                                                        Vrishka Vrishka went through the steps of her kata, the saber catching the luminescent fungial light that lit the underdark.  "Wrong, your feet are too static move more!" Her father commanded. Vrishka sighed in frustration as she came to the end of her kata and looked at her father. "This is not me, I should be a priestess of Lolth!" Her father leaned against the stone wall and crossed his arms. "You can never be, your mothers blood prevents it" his voice was stern. "I hate her, she has cursed me!" Vrishka cried out, staring at her father. She knew she had gone to far, her father's eyes flashed and he crossed the distance between them quickly. Vrishka held her saber in a ready stance and he batted it aside with the flat of his hand. "stupid little girl!" She bellowed, "You no nothing about your mother, how dare you speak of her in this way!"He raised his hand to her and she closed her eyes. Vrishka felt the anger and broken heart of a Drow that day, she received the same beating any young drow would have for insulting her parents. The welts on her back healed quickly and did not scar, she remembered that day for a long time afterward and never spoke ill of her mother again. She did however still harbor the desire to be one of Lolth's chosen, she would take the test of spiders and show them all.... (Vrishka's Father's anger)

Plans for the Future Having both reached 9th level, Torvald and Baradin are considered "lords" which entitles them to followers. The only catch is they have to either build or claim their own holding. Initially Portlandio was intended to be that home. However, the recent disasters and events have left the city greatly deteriorated. Restoring it would require a full regime change followed by large investments of gold into reconstruction efforts... Frankly neither of my characters envision much of a future there. If we survive this current adventure, I propose we begin the process of establishing our own fiefdom. The core of the Barony would be human and dwarves. All good aligned races/species would be welcomed and allowed to settle in parts of the territory. However, an oath of fealty would have to be offered to either Torvald or Baradin. Each group would also be required to contribute to the good of the commonwealth. Initially this would come through either goods/services, labor, or levied troops. As the community grows it would change into simple monetary taxation. A common rule of law would be established. It would be enforced by local sheriffs drawn from their communities. While appointed magistrates would administer and hold preliminary hearings... TBC

Confessions of a Spider Priestess A moment taken after defeating the dragons Vrishka slipped off her giant molten spider mount and called her companions together. “Ultrix speaks the truth, I am indeed Drow” She reached into her robes and takes out a Drow Scimitar, it seemingly non magical. She places the weapon on the ground in front of her and looks at the people assembled before her. She let her eyes rest on Ultrix the Grey Elf’s honey coloured eyes alert as always with a great intelligence and now undisguised hatred. “I will not apologise for my blood” Vrishka’s normally quiet voice had a touch of steel to it; she paused as the lava around them boiled and bubbled. “Ultrix was right, should you ever meet one of my kin you would do well to kill them on sight. After all, that is the way of things is it not?” She reached up to his hood and pulled it down, the volcanic light showing her violet eyes and pure white hair. “I am no match for you all, you could slay me where I stand and suffer little.” She rested against the molten spiders forelegs. “But I ask you hear me out before meeting out your justice.” “What do you all know of Lolth and her ways?” She kept her eyes on Ultrix, knowing speaking the Spider Queens name alone was risky. “I don’t worship Lolth and it’s important you know why.” She slipped her fingers into her pocket and took out her pipe, lighting the end. The purple hued smoke had a slightly spicey edge to it, taking a draw she went on. “I was but a Zwy’’il and at that time I had a lot to prove. You have to understand, Drow life is hard and bitter. You rise to the surface on the backs of the weak or you become one of the many slaves that hold those high Drow aloft. I was born to a modest house; my mother perished during my birth and was the first life I ever took. This is the only reason I am not a slave, in Lolth’s eyes I took her life so I could claim mine” Vrishka smoked the strange mix of mushrooms and herbs, she told her tale and awaited her fate. The day of Vrishka’s Chwineka was upon her, she could feel it in her bones. The Chwineka was the first of Lolth’s “Chwi” or punishments, as a Goddess Lolth enjoys seeing her children fall to chaos and ruin as much as see them rise to power and glory. She was living in a temple to Lolth with the other sisters; she rose as always early and with caution. It was not uncommon for the sisters to kill each other, though there should be method or merit to the act. She dressed and proceeded into the main training hall, this was a place of not only worship but combat and magical prowess. A Priestess of Lolth was expected to be the better of a male in all aspects of her life. To neglect the martial or magical aspects left one open to destruction. Vrishka felt eyes on her, she turned around and peered into the practise hall. There was one fellow sister Zwy’il intently meditating, the novice was sat cross legged in a state of silence. “Lurking again halfie?” A hand clapped down on her shoulder, she recognised the finely painted nails of Dominix. Halfie was her insulting nickname, she was known as the half breed amoung her peers. Her skin was too light to be a pure blooded Drow. “What is it sister Dominix? No weak males to torment today?” Vrishka turned and looked into the eyes of this arrogant elf. “I have my share of males and then some Halfie, shame your sickly pallor wipes the fair looks from your face” Dominix smiled an overly sinister tooth filled grin. “At least you seem to be intact, no deformities of form, I suppose a low born male might risk the shame of bedding you” Her tone was goading, Vrishka was within her rights to confront and possibly kill Dominix for that statement. Were Vrishka a full blooded Drow she would have duelled the arrogant girl, be it with magic or steel. But to do so as a half breed would be ill advised, besides Dominix’s skill with a blade it was doubtful an Elder of the Temple would cast in Vrishka’s favour. Vrishak turned away and looked down the practise hall, a sign she was backing down much to the delight of Dominix. “So weak, oh well” The stronger girl mocked. “Sometimes I doubt you are Drow at all, I bet you have never even taken a life”. Vrishka felt the eyes upon her again, a terrible mocking stare. Her blood surged with the unmistakable knowledge that Lolth was watching, her Chewinka has begun. She felt her heart start to pound as the adrenaline surged through her veins, her pupils dilated fully and she felt her hands starting to shake. A Euphoric surge of pure majesty blasted through her consciousness, she was akin to a Goddess. A True daughter of Lolth and could strike down her enemies with ease and cunning, while bedding their husbands. Vrishka’s eyes fell on the meditating girl, she was still not moving. Vrishka knew without a doubt what Lolth has decided, the sacrifice of her mother was not enough. She would have to give another soul to her terrible Goddess. Vrishka took a deep last draw of her pipe and paused a moment, her mount shuffled slightly feeling her unease. The tale continued in a puff of purple smoke from between her lips. It was now; the half breed would dominate this Drow girl and deliver her life to Lolth. The others would respect her and realise she was not their equal but their better! Vrishka stalked forward her skin heated and tingling, she closed on the meditating Elf girl. From behind her Dominix clapped her hands in exictment. She saw the Chewinka gripping Vrishka, there could only be two possible outcomes and both would be equally amusing. The clap snapped the girl out of her trance and she looked up at Vrishka, the girls eyes widened as she saw the predatory intent, hands raised defensivly. Vrishka fell on the girl all nails and hate, landing blow after blow on the girls face and arms. Vrishka exalted in the savagery her blood calling out for more violence, she still felt Lolth’s gaze upon her and shrieked in delight. Leaping on the girl fully she lost herself to a haze of red, resorting to primal instinct. Vrishka grabbed the terrified girl’s arms and hissed like a giant spider before plunging her teeth into the side of the girl’s neck. The girl screamed in shock as she was bitten, Vrishka could taste the blood of this Drow as it surged over her teeth and filled her mouth. She knew that one hard snap of her jaw and the girls throat would be torn asunder. Vrishka tapped the pipe against her knee letting it empty of ash and paused a moment, she looked up at the no doubt shocked looks from her companions. She did not look at Ultrix, if the Grey Elf was going to slay her, it would be now. She continued her recount. With a great heave she pulled her head back tearing the girl’s throat open, the blood spray covered her face and eyes. The girl made no sound as she died, Vrishka’s bite had been mercifully deep, and she bled out in seconds. Shaking her head Vrishka felt a rush of guilt and horror at her own actions. “By the dark gods!” Dominix cried out as she back away from the slaying. “What are you?” Vrishka blinked and swallowed, instantly she tasted the wrongness of what had happened and started to gag. Bent over the still warm corpse she brought up the girls blood and coughed. The sight of the beaten and savagely killed girl filled her vision, the girl’s eyes open and vacant. Vrishka screamed, a scream of pity and remorse. A pain started in her heart, akin to a heart attack. The pain started to radiate out from her chest to her limbs. She slumped over the dead girl and started to convulse her eyes turning black as midnight. “She failed the Chewinka! She turns!” Dominix cried fleeing the scene. Vrishka could feel the disgust of Lolth filling her form. To feel any remorse or uncertainty during one’s Chewinka was a fate worse than death, to be cursed by Lolth herself. Vrishka changed, she mutated on the spot. Her nerves screaming as muscles and bones were torn asunder to be reformed into something else. Six eyes erupted from her cheeks and she felt jaw bone break as long teeth grew from between her lips into fangs. Her own eyes grew twice their natural size the sockets breaking and reforming around them, she tried to speak but an unintelligible noise erupted from her mouth. Two of her ribs detonated inside her chest, splintering the reforming, moving to jut out of her sides. From them grew two extra spider like legs. The curse of Lolth was complete, she had been turned into a Aracholoth. “Neither Spider nor Drow, it is a mockery of Lolth. Those that suffer this fate are persecuted and enslaved” Vrishka stated “I had displeased Lolth in feeling guilt, I have no doubt my half human blood contributed as well. Vrishka looked at Jacob her violet eyes fearful but true. “You asked if my intent was evil. I am half Drow, Hated by my own kin and other Elves alike. Yes part of me is evil and yet I devote myself to healing others.” She looked back at the assembled group, “I attempt to atone for the evil my race does do, and found Arachne the enemy of Lolth. She brought me to the light. I leave my judgement in your hands. Do as you will” Vrishka sat down on the warm stone, she thought of the girl she murdered and wondered if she would share her fate.

Plans for the Future - Part 2 The local sheriff and magistrate would handle the day to day legal concerns of the community. Special cases and appeals would be sent to a special council for adjudication. This group would be appointed by the sovereign from senior judicial officials and serve no more than two consecutive years. After this term expires another selection would be held and so forth... The sovereign may rule directly in rare circumstances that directly affect the welfare of the nation. Religious freedom would be limited; mostly to good/neutral deities. Chaotic/Evil worship is strictly forbidden and subject to purge. However, special exceptions can be made for specific followers of Chaotic Neutral gods based upon their domains. All religious organizations shall be declared tax exempt. However, construction of churches/temples/shrines will be subject to a one time tax. Militant orders will not be allowed within the realm without express approval from the ruling sovereign. To be recognized they must meet the following conditions: A declaration of intent. A charter of operations. And a registry of all active members operating within the barony. A sizable one time tax will be levied upon acceptance. However, a smaller yearly tax will be levied to maintain the groups charter. Each member is also required to pay a yearly licensing fee. Failure to comply will lead to either expulsion or imprisonment. Mercenary groups will not be allowed within the realm unless approved or hired directly by the ruling sovereign. Individual Sell-swords are permitted. However they must register with the local militia and pay a small licensing fee that must be renewed yearly. Soldiers honorable discharged from the Military or Militia will have all associated fees wavered. (This is in gratitude of their service and to encourage veterans to continue working within the barony.) They are still required to register but their overall process will be expedited.
Journal Notes 1/10 Vrishka's story was moving, although I have to admit I was more interested in the herbs packed in to her pipe than what she was saying. They smelled... different. Not what I was accustomed to. As far as I am concerned as long as she is aiding us in completing our goal what has happened in her past is irrelevant. Should she choose to succumb to her old ways among us I am sure Torvald would put a swift end to it all without even losing a single hair from his chin. After resting and then traversing across this blasted land we made our way to an entrance. Inside we were greeted with a blast of fire. Oh no.... who would have guessed. A dragon. Upon its second pass Puck seemed to use some darker magic... crippling it and forcing it to land. He could have chosen a better time to do it though as the dragon landed directly on top of me, pinning me beneath its claws. Fortunately having been made younger also made be a bit smaller... just small enough to wiggle my way out before I would have become his appetizer. The dragon took blow after blow from our party as it dished it right back out. Eventually It realized that we weren't the every day adventurers... and perhaps it stirred up the wrong hornets nest. As it attempted to flee Puck released a torrent of crackling energy stopping the dragon in its tracks. Torvald not willing to admit that he did not deal the final  blow quickly ran to the dragon and began hacking it to pieces. Surely I will over hear him at the bar telling adventurers passing by how he faced this great  beast... "and as my friends were on the brink of death.... I stroked my beard and charged forward! Slashing through limb after limb as if it were birthday cake!" Once the dragon was slain we began to collect ourselves before venturing further, but alas... another dragon. This one not quite as strong. Baradin made quick work of it after charging it with his lance. It was rather majestic to watch. His hair bouncing with each stride of Javan, his armor glinting as the flames reflected their light, and his gleeful smile as he punctured through the beast. How many more dragons are in this place? Do I even want to know?

A brief moment between encounters A High Drow Vrishka lit her pipe again, offering it to any that might like a smoke. The purple incense like smoke enlisted a calming glow in her lungs, the party did not have time to catch their collective breath. The lava in this volcano was on the rise and she did not know how much time they had before it reached critical mass and blew. She had exhausted all her offensive spells and only had her healing spells at the ready, she could shape change again two more times this day but she doubted she could hold her own in a straight fight. Taking another draw from her pipe, in between her teeth and out through her nose she felt her fingers tingle. Perhaps getting high at a time like this could be considered a mistake but she didn't care. They would be victorious or would all die, dooming this continent to ashes and darkness, a darkness not unlike the underdark of her ex home. Lolth would exalt in a place blanketed by ash and darkness, her kin would rise to the surface and enslave all that lived on the surface. The males would be culled en mass to leave only a few. Drow despised males of even their own species, being a male slave and the subject to a Cleric of Lolth would be a fate most would prefer death over. Vrishka snickered to herself, it was a dark laugh one common to her kin. Her pupils started to widen and she felt her hair itch, the puffball herbs were taking effect. Already she felt better about the situation, they had after all slain two dragons and two fire giants. "Suck it Lolth" she said, hoping that some ware in the greater planes Lolth could see her opportunity to invade the surface falling away. Vrishka hoped the Spider Goddess knew that her bastard half daughter would be assisting these companions.  Running her tongue online her teeth she felt them wriggling, the nerves firing errent messages as she became more intoxicated. The spiders in her hair tugged at some of her white strands, they could smell the smoke and no doubt did not approve. "Give a girl a moment of pleasure would you? Judge me later spiderkin" Vrishka said, leaning against the warm stone wall. The purple smoke wreathing her lilth form. She gave in to the euphoric intoxication and started to laugh, the volcano, this company and what awaited them all seemed so amusing. Vrishka threw back her head and roared with laughter, collapsing into a fit of giggles. She slid down the wall and sat cross legged giggling to herself her breath purple with the heady smoke.
Journal Notes 1/17 Even  more of the benders allies stand in our way of stopping him. Powerful beasts and giants none the less. The lava seems to be rising more and more... we must hurry!

Baradin's Journal - Late Winter By the gods! Nothing beats a charge on horseback! It took three lance strikes to take down that fire giantess... All while fighting off several gorgimera that turned several party members into stone! It was a surefire gamble but it paid off. Javen definitely deserves my last apple and a small handful of sugar cubes... Now into the Heart of the Inferno to stop the impending Doomsday...
Vrishka placed the last of her cave herbs into the end of her pipe, she clicked her tongue in annoyance. “Now just where am I going to get more of you around here?” She muttered to herself. There had been some discussion about starting a settlement, this could be her chance to find a home. She knew of a group of druidic followers that would be happy to settle some ware safe. She lit the end of the pipe and took a long draw of the purple tinged smoke, it filled her lungs with a soft pleasurable burn. A broad smile spread across her dark lips the fatigue from fleeing a pyroclastic surge starting to fade. Not for the first time she regarded her companions, they were powerful and skilful. To slay two dragons at once was frankly a legendary feat. She herself had been targeted and attacked by enemies many times. “Time to break out the destructive spells I think, a spider not only builds webs and creates but also delivers poison” She blew out a ring of smoke and thought about what spells would be best to have on the tip of her tongue. Traditionally her kin would employ magical globes of darkness against their foes. The darkness would confuse their enemies and to make things even worst they would use faerie fire to highlight their targets in the darkness. Vrishka ran her tongue along her teeth, her gums feeling itchy from the narcotics within the smoke. She grinned wickedly and decided to have those spells to hand, most surface dwelling races would not expect that kind of attack. She felt one of her spiders skitter up her chest and push out from between her robes, the new leather armour she wore was comfortable and provided great protection but her spiders were not used to it yet. Vrishka turned her head and blew a stream of smoke out over the spider on her shoulder. She arachnid ruffled it’s pitch black fur in response. “Oh come now Full, you should learn to relax a little.” Vrishka said as she drew again of the sweet musky herbs. Full blinked her many eyes in response, to which Vrishka sighed. “You take life to seriously Full, not everything has to be so considered and calm hmm. Or perhaps you are frustrated and need a mate?” Full made no sound but waved it’s legs in a complex manner, to the trained eye it would have resembled the Drow sign language, of a sort. “Me? Dear me no, that’s far from my mind” Vrishka grinned letting smoke leak from between her lips lazily. “Besides do you see anyone queuing up to make a half Drow an honest woman?” Vrishka lay back on the volcanic ground looking up into the sky, it was still filled with ash but that ash was thinning out. She brought the pipe to her lips and took the last draw from within, Full swayed slightly as she hung from the end of it, a line of slivery web attached.

Baradin's Journal - Late Winter What an anti-climatic battle... All it took was Ultrix casting cloudkill and the Fire Bender was dissolved into nothing! From there it was a simple tunnel crawl up to where the Fire Celestial was imprisoned... A knock spell... and done... We saved the world without breaking a sweat! About the only threat we faced was a random Fire Demon that was patrolling near the rear entrance. Some quick sword-play and it was no more... Then off to the races as we scrambled to escape the erupting volcano. It was a full on charge down the mountain... dodging rivers of lava and burning pyroclastic debris... In a rush the some of our party got separated. They were stranded on a large outcropping of rock... surrounded by molten lava. Those still empowered by their Fire Protection Scrolls hopscotched across the flows to safety. Others required aerial rescue... Slightly singed and exhausted... we stumbled onto the beach...  Only to find our ride home was... GONE!!!... An entire ship... GONE!!... All our excess provisions...GONE!!! To say the least, I was beyond angry; having gone through lengthy means to procure a faithful crew. However, fortune was in our favor as keen eyes observed the ship nearing the horizon... Turning into a giant bat, Vrishka picked up Jacob (our Cleric of Helm) and flew after it. Several hours later, the ship returned, and we all heard their tale... SEAWOLVES! Those damnable aquatic lycanthropes had invaded and absconded with our vessel! Lamentably they killed several of our crew members before being chased off by Jacob's furious hammering (Helm be praised!)...  Now we have the.... Ship... ** Baradin stops writing *** "OH merciful GODS! Why is the ship half burned?!?... Where's the crew?!? (glares at Jacob & Vrishka - who shrugs) ... These repairs are going to take weeks..."
Journal Notes 1/24 Nearly everyone we encountered seemed to be fearful of the angry fire bender, but perhaps it is Ultrix that should be feared. Determined she crawled and scrapped her way through the tunnel releasing some sort of death magic. By the time the rest of us made our way through the fire bender lay lifeless, although he wasn't very much alive before either I suppose. By this time though the bender had already begun his ritual and the heart of the volcano expanded and contracted over and over growing exponentially with each cycle. The others managed to free the sacrificial celestial who seemingly gave his life in turn to quell the impending cataclysmic disaster, if only partially as we made our escape. Fleeing from the heart of the volcano we were pursued by a tidal wave of magma that devoured everything it touched and nipped at our heels with each passing second. We made it to the coast... or at least I believe we all did. Wait.... where's our ship?
Vrisha laughed when they asked about the ship pointing at Jacob, mildly high on her herbs "Ask the watcher, it was his plan!"
Vrishka walked through Portlandio, she had not been in the city before. It was an urban nightmare, Vrishka felt the rough walked stones beneath her feet. How many times had they been stepped upon she wondered. Normally she would have avoided this place but she needed more herbs for her pipe, she had spent almost half a day searching out the herbs she required. It turned out she had to visit the black markets, surface dwellers had laws against the narcotics she enjoyed most. “I wonder what the more goodly people in the group would think about my breaking the law?” She chuckled and walked on. She made her way back to the main company offering them a nod and a smile. Vrishka looked around and made sure that Grubar was not looking at her, she did not want to distress the Giant man any more than she already had done. His association of spiders and death was interesting and she wished she spoke the same language, it would have been interesting to learn about his culture. “Well time to test this crown I think” She sat down in the grass and took a calming breath in and blew it out again. She was used to shape shifting into many different animals but on this occasion it would be best to choose one she knew well, the spider. She reached up to the crown and touched the Amber there. She felt the start of the shape shift, it was strange to feel the power radiate from an object and not within her. Vrishka started to scream. The pain was not a physical or emotional sort but an existential kind. She felt the core of her being starting to rend, the muscles tore in moments every bone in her body shattered leaking marrow into her tissue. Her mind began to fracture into hundreds of smaller pieces, each one unique yet part of a whole. Her screaming came to an abrupt halt as her form changed, the person that was Vrishka was no more. Her robes flew open at the front and fell as five hundred spiders erupted from where she stood. Vrishka opened her eyes. The world was rent hundreds of times, different angles and heights all moving. She could hear everything hundreds of times all at once, had she been in her body she would have vomited from the over exposure to this much sensory information. She could feel the urge to hunt, the venom in her fangs cried out for soft bodies. Vrishka cried out in frenzy, the urge to hunt multiplied five hundred times. The mass of spiders all made a sharp hiss at the same time, any of the companions who witness this would notice they all moved in perfect unison and hissed as one. The mass of arachnids charged at a nearby tree, ascending it using webs and legs. Every living creature in that tree was slain, any birds, insects or small mammals where bitten and stung with poisons. The spiders feasted and Vrishka in turn feasted, she experienced the hunt and the kill for each spider simultaneously. She had never experienced a barrage of the senses at this level before. Once the tree was stripped of all life the spiders rested and Vrishka felt the most crushing exhaustion of both body and soul. A few moments after the frenzy Vrishka fell from the tree, back in half elven form she was unconscious and naked on the ground save for the crown in her hand, tightly held and sleeping soundly. She would not awaken through normal means, with her failure to control the many spiders her spiritual power was spent. She would sleep for a few hours and dream of fangs, webs and soft bodies consumed.
