Dynamic Lighting, Global Illumination

Let's say that there's a map, and on this map there is a building. Inside the building is completely dark, but outside, it's a bright sunny day. It'd be nice if I could just have the 'global illumination' apply to only the outside area, while the inside is dark. Not really sure how it could be implemented, but it would be convenient and nice, rather than having to set up a bazillion light sources outside, or set up an entirely separate map for indoors.
I handle this exactly as you describe, but you don't need to set up many light sources. The secret is to set a large radius on the exterior light sources.
The only thing that I could think of is to allow for the global illumination to be directional (as in an imitation of the sun)  The easiest current solution would be to have a few high powered light sources.
Oh certainly, there are work around. I think it'd just be nice if it were a little easier? Like, if you could designate zones of bright or dim or dark or blue or etc. You can do it manually, it's just a thought.
Yes, I want things like the map North indicator and key, title, scale to always be visible.  Drawing a shape (like remove fog) for always-visible area would be great, and better than what I do now: Draw a box around the area and add a transparent png player-controlled token with light and sight into the box. It could be used for lighting outside areas or 'goal' area.
I have a big map that is globally illuminated but with a few dark buildings.  I wish I could just draw 'dark' areas for those buildings.  Instead of global illumination, I think a map should start as fully-lit or fully-dark BUT allow you to draw lit / dark areas.  Existing global-illumination maps will simply become fully-lit maps with no dark areas.
