new guy - kind of lost

Hi - I am completely new to this site and I have not played AD&D for about 20 years now and I wanted to get back into. I was looking for a HOW-TO or a guide on how to get started but i've not been able to find this. How does this work? How do I generate a new character and begin to play? Those are the 2 very basic and simple questions I have right now. Beyond this, how does one play? Do I need the rule books ideally to get going and understand the world again? Sorry, I know these are very basic questions but I figured someone in the community could answer or point me in the right direction to help get me started. thanks
Daniel, you may find it useful to take a look at the Roll20 wiki since there are a few getting started videos there along with tons of other information: https://wiki.roll20.net/Main_Page Before you make a character, you'll probably want to find a game to play in. We've got a few tools to help you do that. You can check out the looking for group forum to find other people looking to play or post about what kind of game you are looking to be in ( https://app.roll20.net/forum/category/22 ). You can also take a browse through the Looking For Group Listings ( https://app.roll20.net/lfg/search ) which will let you search for specific types of games that you might be interested in. Roll20 is designed to be system agnostic, meaning you can play just about any type of game you want using the application. The person GMing the game is often the one to decide what books they will use, what house rules they might have, and what rules will be used to make characters. Welcome to Roll20, Don't be afraid to keep asking questions!

Hi Daniel, welcome to the community. Listen to Sarah and look about. Remember how you use to have to go to a game store and look at their poster board that would list a group looking for a player or a DM looking to run a game. That is what the Looking for a Game listing and forum is. Roll20 is just a online version of that table you use to gather around with various people. It's not a video game or anything else like that. Just look for a group and let them know you are interested in their game if it caught your attention. Like in real life, there is a some people you will enjoy gaming with and others you won't want to. Take your time and look about. Just ask any questions and someone will answer.
Daniel, you look for a game you want to play. in LFG forums. Match up the times they are playing with what you can make. Contact the GM via a post or PM. Then either the GM or you find a book with the rules to generate a character and you make a character, or the GM provides one from a selection of characters they have. The GM sets up the campaign connection link. You then show up to play at the appointed time by using your browser to go to that link. Play then depends on if the GM is narrating or using the map or both. You can use the whiteboard as a virtual table, except instead of Minis, the GM might use icons, or drawings, or sketches or just typed narrative. You type into the chat window and either the GM or you set up a character sheet or at least notes in the different campaign pages. Game doesn't matter, as stated, it's just a tool to allow players who cannot sit at the same physical table to game together at least same shared virtual space. For the last 8 weeks, I've run two concurrent far future Science fiction games set in the year 5440, 7 sessions each. Now that is done. 13 Dec, I'm starting a Survival Horror Game set in Pittsburgh, Modern Day. Rules set All Flesh Must be Eaten. It all depends on what the GM is willing to run, etc. Good luck in finding a game.
