So Watch this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUJIR03VRD0" rel="nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUJIR03VRD0</a> if you want to get a good idea for what the strange is, it uses the Cypher system from previous montecook adaptions (numenera) with some enhanced features. As i'm running a one shot i'm going to start you off as reasonably proficient explorers of the strange (estate agents) you'll still be tier 1 but your characters have already been introduced to the strange, and thus you have 4 xp to spend. You can choose either a short term benefit (like denying a GM intrusion) or on long term benefit (like learning a new skill). As it says in the book "Starting (first-tier) characters are already competent, and there are only six tiers. Character advancement has a power curve, but it’s only steep enough to keep things interesting. In other words, gaining levels is cool and fun, but it’s not the only path to success or power. If you spend all your XP on immediate, short- and medium-term benefits, you would be different from someone who spends her points on long-term benefits, but you would not be “behind” that character." (spending xp, page 16) What i'm like as a GM: My play style is story focused RP friendly, im trying to work on my combat too (aiming to be fair but merciless in the one-shot). The rules are nice and broad, they cover a variety of possible circumstances and i see them as a mechanism for fun rather than a crutch, however that said i'm no rule-savant or grinder ( i have read the rule-book but will re-cover it over the next week) if you come up with a creative way of tackling an obstacle that the rules wont allow for i'll certainly consider rewarding clever play.
