Limiting compendium access

I'm getting ready to run Storm King's Thunder and as part of prep I re-joined the game as a player. That's when I noticed that I could (as a player) browse and view all entries from the Monster Manual, Volo's guide, etc. Everything attached to the compendium. I don't want my players to have the monster manual right in their faces like that. Is there a way to hide it from them?

Volo's and the monster manual are only visible if you have bought that content, so you as a player can see them, your players can't, unless you drag an item in to make it a handout/character and give them view access.
It's not like they can't just google the monster anyway. There's no real point to hiding information.

You could just do what I do and use a different name for the monster or use the token for one creature and give it the stats of a different one. If your players are prone to meta-gaming, there's really not much you can do to prevent it short of removing them from the game. For reference, it would be no different than someone sitting at the table with their books out and open. If a player pipes up and says "that monster can't do that!" you simply look back at them grinning and say "mine can." ;)

It really detracts from the story and action of the game when he's sitting there muttering out the math for figuring out if it's "worth it" to try a disable device check on the lock or what the BBEG's AC or attack bonus is. Unfortunately, with the prevalence of online resources, there's no way to prevent it except for smacking them down when they do it. I do agree with you Khrain, that none of the above means you should make it easy for them to find the info :)
