I think what Devin was asking about is what system do you want to learn, cause there's a metric crapload of them around and depending on the system the mechanics of gameplay can be vastly different. For a beginner the most recommended would be the 5th edition of D&D, overly simplified for someone who wants something more, but it is geared towards new players. Still, you might want to search around and see what's available, cause sometimes the more challenging systems are far more gratifying to learn.
