RPGMapShare Going Subscription: Effects on Roll20?

http://rpgmapshare.com/?q=content/major-change-coming I assume if this happens then RPGMapShare objects will not be available by an image search. Does this mean that existing drag-and-drop objects will stop existing once they go behind a paywall? And assuming a Roll20 user subscribes, does this mean images would have to be individually uploaded against the user's storage quota?
This is a very good question, that I would also love an answer to.

If it does indeed go to a subscription-based model, then yes they would no longer appear in search results. Your existing campaigns would most likely be unaffected, though -- although some small portion of them might display a "broken image" graphic, as was the case when the RPTools Gallery went down. You could still upload content from there into your own account and it would count toward your quota. We've reached out the them to see if there's anything we can do to keep this resource available to the online gaming community for free, but in the end it's up to them.

I make extensive use of Roll20's graphic search, but I always follow the link and download the image rather than just dragging directly onto my game page. You never know when a source might suddenly go offline and besides, by following the link I usually find other artwork I decide I would like to have as well. I keep everything organized and stored on my hard drive (and backed up of course) and only upload it into my Roll20 library when I need it.
We have agreed to sponsor them for the next 6 months (and will likely continue to do so after that as well), and as a result it will remain free and open. I'll probably write up a blog post about it after all the Rugged Reroll madness subsides.
Riley that is an awesome thing to do for the gaming community as a whole, you guys are awesome!
Wow and awesome.
Thanks Riley. I secretly hoped in my heart of hearts something would happen when I posted that, as the map resource is a really good match for Roll20. Headed for the support page now. :)
When I saw they were going subscription I made a post on their forum recommending they contact you (after I downloaded almost their whole archive :P). I'm so happy to see they reached out to Roll20 as their site is an awesome resource for the community. Thank you Roll20 for your awesome RPG community outreach! This is one of the reasons I'll be a subscriber as soon as I have some disposable income.
