Have you ever wanted to be the characters who saved the world; a la Tolkien?  Or a hero whose weapons became famous because of who wielded them, like El Cid or Roland?  Well, that was the fantasy works I read.  When we found D&D back in the earliest days, that was the world we tried to create.  It didn't exactly fit.  Magic was stuff you found, dungeons and overlands were more Conan-like than Tolkien.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy those too.  Just we felt it was missing something. Gygax, back when D&D started was very open on creating new spells on the fly, quick discussion of power level, can you cast it, etc. and then move on.  He started characters at 3rd level to increase chances to survive.  I wanted some thing to incorporate that, and not get too complex. So, this homebrew.  It is based on Basic D&D.  I'm using skills, not feats.  There are only four base classes, most everything else can be created using mixes of the four and skills.  Magic is plentiful, but most is not very powerful.  I'm working on creating a base of magic effects, that are combined to make higher level spells.  The difference between cleric and wizard isn't the spells, it is how they power them.  Magic items can grow with the character, and the player has input on what they do.  You can still find them, just don't have to depend on that. I'm mixing in things I find useful from other systems (D&D and other).  Evil and Good, Law and Chaos.  Anything to help role-play I can find.  I'll be using Arneson's hit location table from 'Blackmoor' rather than a critical hit/miss chart, with aimed blows.  I'm studying 5e's backgrounds to see if they will fit.  I'm willing to entertain suggestions. As to the campaign world, Yep there is an over-powering evil threatening the world.  You characters start larger than life (much better than normal people) with special equipment and abilities.  You just don't know how to use them, and the Power is hunting you from the start.  There is no requirement to follow the 'Path to Destiny', you can wander as you like.  BUT, things will move as time goes by, the Power hunts you and only gets stronger. So, I'm wondering if there is any interest in this?  My original idea was about 10-12 people max., there is a system in place allowing new characters if one died (to a limit.  I believe it was 36-48 could be entered, including the first ones.  If they all die, campaign ends Evil Triumphant.)
