Voice Identity

Howdy. So, I played a game on Roll20 with discord for voice, and we spent most of the time on the main roll20 game window.  The voice ran in the background.  The problem was, I could not tell who was speaking.  While discord IDs the person speaking with a little circle around their name, the icons in the roll20 room are not tied into it.  Eventually, I am sure I learn everyone's voice, but this was our first game and we were all strangers to each other.  We needed the Roll20 platform, which was great for the game, but it got confusing, even for the GM trying to ID people who were speaking at that particular moment. Is there a work around?  I understand Roll20 has voice but someone said it is overwhelmed at the moment.  Bandwidth?  I don't know.  I just think it should be possible for a voice chat application to remain 'on top' as the dominant window while representing only a minimum presence. (Like ONLY showing names and maybe a push to talk button) I appreciate any ideas or assistance.  Thank you.

Unfortunately, this isn't something that Roll20 can affect. Discord does have an overlay that can be enabled, but I have never gotten it to work with a non-full screen application. It sounds like you are using a single monitor, one thing you could do is put discord on one side of the screen in a narrow column, but so you can still see the members of the chat room, then pop your roll20 chat pane out and put that over the unnecessary portion of the discord window.
Yeah... I just thought with all this tech and all this time energy and money spent by so many people on gaming that there should be a single, idiot proof, one click way to make it all work flawlessly.

Skype will do this, sort of. If has a floating window that will hover above the Roll20 window. If a person doesn't have a camera going, it will show their avatar, but only for the person currently speaking. It can be moved, but not resized. It can be distracting.
