Character Creation Guidelines & I Want to Play X Discussion

1494373421

Edited 1494622049
Feel free to use this thread to discuss what type of character each of you is interested in playing. This may avoid overlap/stepping on each other’s toes. If you need help creating your character or have any questions, please ask. The points below should address most questions. This game will be open to using all of the official FFG SW books. Please use some common sense on what species you pick. Nothing too silly or exotic. Please don’t ask to play a Hutt, Gungan, Jawa, or Ewok. If in doubt, check with me first. Since this is a time when the Empire is in power, someone in the party may want to play a human in case you need to impersonate an Imperial or something like that. Please keep the gender of your character the same as the player’s (your) gender. Characters will begin the game with starting species experience and 500 credits plus the option to up your experience and/or credits from Obligation, Duty, and Morality. You may pick the 5 or 10 option for the extra XP and/or credits if you desire. For Obligation and Duty, I like to incorporate them into the game in a way that makes story sense rather than roll for them to come up. If the group has a high amount of Obligation, expect that you may get into shall we say “peripheral trouble” more often. If you type up a character backstory of at least a few sentences or bullet points, you may spend an additional 5 XP at character creation . Please don’t send me anything longer than 2 pages. Your character is relatively unknown but with a promising future. As part of the backstory, please explain how you were compelled to come to Port Tooga in the Outer Rim. You may want to use Obligation, Duty, or Morality to this end. See the forum thread about Port Tooga for some background and a few NPCs you could link your character to, but also feel free to invent some NPCs as part of your backstory. Starting gear you may have for free: 1) Commlink (handheld), 2) Stimpack x 1 All of the careers and specializations from Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny are fair game. This game will have a strong focus on the seedier side of Star Wars, at least initially. Edge of the Empire careers and specializations may make more sense. If you want to play a career and specialization from Age of Rebellion and have ties to the Alliance, I can make that work too. No problem. Your character is either Force sensitive or not. You must decide at character creation and reflect that in any character background you create. You don’t have to pick a Force and Destiny career and specialization at character creation. That can be something you can grow into later. Droids cannot be Force sensitive. If your character is Force sensitive, I will be keeping track of any conflict you earn during a session, and that will impact where you are on the dark side – light side continuum. Ideally, I’d like to have only 1 or 2 characters in the party being Force sensitive. Force sensitivity should be a very rare, mysterious, and wondrous thing. I can be flexible on this though if more than a couple of people want to be Force sensitive. If you play a Force sensitive character, you’ll probably find buying the Force powers with your XP to be very tempting. Expect to have weaker general skills compared to the other characters as a result. Do not expect to be a powerful Force user off the bat. If you pick one of Force sensitive careers, you start off at Force Rating 1 with the abilities of an untrained Force user or Jedi youngling (a beginner). Whatever motivations and background you pick as part of the character generation process should be reflected in whatever character background you create and how you role play your character. What are three goals your character wants to accomplish in his or her life? Tell the GM what they are. Your character should have a secret. Tell the GM what that secret is. What does your character love? What does your character hate? No characteristics above 5 at character creation. NOTE: After character creation the only way to up a characteristic is to spend experience and pick Dedication at the bottom of a specialization tree. So, it is generally wise to get your characteristics as high as possible during character creation while still saving some initial experience for skills. No skills can be trained above rank 2 (two yellow) during character creation. Your Intellect characteristic number indicates how many languages you know fluently. Everyone knows Basic. For every Intellect number greater than 1, you know one additional language. For example, if your Intellect is 3, you would know Basic and two additional languages such as Huttese and Binary. Please indicate in your character background or on your character sheet what languages you speak. If you happen to be playing a protocol droid, let’s chat. Here’s a link to a partial list of languages for ideas: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Language/Legends No armor, weapons, or gear above rarity 5 at character creation. Keep in mind that if you look too threatening in more civilized cultures, you will attract the attention of the authorities. Besides getting armor and a weapon(s), you may want to consider getting an Extra Reload for your blaster and additional Stimpacks. Do not exceed your encumbrance threshold unless you are okay with suffering game penalties. The party may want to have a face character, a pilot, someone with stealth, and ranged combat skills. For planning purposes on growing your character, it may be helpful to know that I’m somewhat generous in awarding session experience. Depending on what occurs during a session, you can expect to earn between 10 – 20 XP a session. For combat, exceptional role play, exceptional creativity, and completing objectives, there’s the possibility of earning additional XP. Expect to be sent some rumors tailored to your character prior to our first session. I’m still mulling over how I want to handle the group having a ship. In past games I offered players ways to earn (or steal) a ship rather than having one right off the bat. We can talk about that more in the forum threads and/or during our session zero. Key skills the party members should have within the group: Astrogation Computers Piloting - Space Underworld Nice to have skills in the group: Gunnery Mechanics Medicine Piloting - Planetary Stealth Streetwise
I would prefer Stealth and Melee build, I don't really want to be the pilot or the face. Bounty hunter/Mandalorian thoughts on background. Also On the ship bit, if needed I do not mind having her clan allow her use of a ship that would fit the crew. Everyone would more than likely at least see her face then. She'd be coming from clan Ordo, which is one of the larger and better off clans 90% of the time in lore. I do not care either way if she is force sensitive or not. So if other people want to be, I don't have to be. My one major question would be on the race. Would you want me to use her actual race or the newly added Mandalorian Human? I am fairly certain that the added advantage of her race comes from being able to see her horns and know she is a Zabrak and that races anger management issues, battle fierceness, two hearts, and a very high pain tolerance as scary. But that is slightly negated through the fact she would be in beskar'gam(armor) at least 98% of the time and no one would really know she is Zabrak. I am cool either way on the ruling though. Armor questions. Padded armor am I allowed for it to be in the same style as Mando armor, helm included? Can I be allowed a filter straw and voice augmenter that only changes her voice to sound like a man? Filter straw isn't really special, it just allows her to drink without taking her helmet off. I also do not mind letting go of extra exp given needed for any of these requests. On the Languages. Dose Mando'a count against my intellect languages? Knowing Mando'a as a mando is like most people knowing basic plus some. Since it is part of their tenets to know and if you don't know it you could be cast out. Not that i mind if it is, I just want to know before I get to that point in my thought process. Last question bit, is that 500 plus what we get for starting, or am I misunderstanding? Cause Ogg Dudes start is 500. Just wanted to make sure I am getting that right.
Good questions, Ze. Group ship: I'll keep your offer in mind if it is needed, but if there is a pilot-type smuggler or fringer or ace in the group and I decide to give the group a ship right off the bat, I think it will make more sense for one if them to own the ship. Species: I have the FFG book with Mandalorians in it, and I recall they are barely distinguishable from regular humans. So, it makes more sense to me on multiple levels for you to be a Zabrak as far as your stats go. If you are helmed/masked and someone can't see the fierce Zabrak visage, I would say any bonuses for being Zabrak for intimidation would not apply unless they've seen what you look like under that helm before. Padded Armor: Yes, you can have your padded armor look like Mandalorian armor style-wise if that is what you want and fits the backstory. It will just have the same stats as padded armor. The filter straw and voice augmenter are very minor things, so no XP or credits deduction needed. I picture your helm will be the most genuinely/fully Mandalorian gear on you. If we play this game long-term we can see about you obtaining full Mandalorian beskar'gam (with cortosis (?), more soak/defense) as a long-term goal. To me, this is something to be earned and perhaps crafted similar to earning a lightsaber. As a side note, if you overtly look like a Mandalorian wearing your armor around, that could have pluses and minuses socially depending on who you encounter. Language: Please count Mando'a in the total count of languages you know. I totally see your point about it being a native language though. My reasoning is that I don't want to overdo the number of languages PCs know. To me, the typical SW being with an intellect of 2 for example would know Basic and a max of two other languages fluently. So, you'll know Basic, Mando'a, and something else assuming your character has a 2 intellect. Starting Credits: Everyone will start the game with just 500 credits. No more unless you pick additional credits from the options for Obligation/Duty/Morality. OggDude's 500 credits is just replicating the recommended starting credits in the core rule books.
All groovy. I try to at least be helpful to my GM. Though in some moments the Mandoness could be just as scary as the Zabrak. lol. The credits was more than likely me misreading, which happens. But I think that clears me through everything... I have her basic shell ready, just need to settle on a job, once everyone else checks in.
I might just play flint if i have to be face of the group. Besides that. Ill just play whatever we need after everyone is done

Unless someone else wants to be a droid, I think I will play an engineering droid - I can potentially cover Astrogation, Mechanics, and Computers. Flavor-wise, a technical generalist, perhaps a bit substandard in any particular area, as generalists often are. Perhaps a midrange commercial model sold in the outer rim, popular among inexperienced explorers and smugglers on a budget. May also add in a smattering of practical knowledge (outer rim, education)
Hey folks. Leaning towards a smuggler (scoundrel or pilot) but willing to be whatever the group needs.
I want to chime in here and say please don't share your character's backstory with your fellow players such as posting your backstory in your Roll20 character sheet. I much prefer that come out during the sessions as you interact with each other and the game world. Also, please be prepared to send me some artwork showing what your character looks like when you get to that stage. I'd like to use that for a token to represent you. Also, you may want to use the picture as your Roll20 profile picture when we play.
So far everyone is willing to play what we need but also list what we want to play. xD which is great! Jer, I have in armor and out of armor looks... Also do you want us to leave our BG out of our sheets that we do in ogg dude and just pm you the history in pm? I rarely look at other's sheets to begin with, but I figured I'd ask rather than assume.

Yes, please leave your backstory out of your OggDude sheet in case you post it on Google Drive or similar for the game's sake. PMing me the history or e-mailing it to me is fine. I'll PM everyone my e-mail address if you don't already have it. Send me a PM asking for my PM if it slips my mind. Thanks!

Hello everyone! I was thinking of being a mechanic. If that is okay? If not I am okay with doing a doctor.
MAX! YAY! You should be corporate Max... That's what you should play. lol Though I do think one of the others just up a bit wants to play an engineering droid. But no one has said they wanna be a medic yet. Also not a problem, Jer! I can do that.
Hi Max, I was planning to cover mechanics and computers as a droid, but can make room if you'd prefer to play a mechanic. Let me know and I can minmax accordingly ;)

Hi All, I was looking to play a Shistavanen Armorer/Soresu Defender then branch off into things like cybertech/droid tech/outlaw tech (probably cyber tech -> outlaw tech if droid tech is being covered). I'll be staying away from ship stuff for the most part, as far as specializations and skills go. Between Jim, Max, and myself, I think we'd have all the crafty stuff covered :P

Holy mechanics batman! I think I'll do a doctor, so we have someone with medicine skill. Maybe a combination of both simce they are intelligence based. Just out of curiosity is anyone playing as a human?
I think not
I was plNing in either playing a faleen face of the group or a cathar hired gun in case we need some heavy hitters
Does your cathar like big guns? because I like to make big guns :D
Well.. catathars are basically giant cats. Cats like lasers. So my huge cat does like huge laser machines
Well my friend, we should get along fine....
Cathar are not giant cats... >.> But I wont get into it. COME ON MAX! DON'T BE A BRING OLE HOOMAN! Join the spaces races. its 2016! I promise the Mando Zab might not head butt you. lol Technically I haven't made a choice on weapons or fighting... But I do like my happy place of "I am a cat, you cannot see me slit your throat." though shooting someone in the face seems to work better 90% of the time. I may go half and halfish later on now that I think about it.
Going with Chiss smuggler (scoundrel) if no one wants to play that type. Notable skills: all Yellow Green Green Deception Perception Pilot - Space Skullduggery Streetwise Underworld - Yellow Yellow Green
Hi all, If you haven't e-mailed me your final backstory and character sheet, please do so by Saturday morning on May 27th. I'll be doing some final game preparation over the weekend for our session 1. Thanks! Jerry
