New player looking to learn

Hi all, Me and a group of friends have been playing around with the idea of getting into D&D for some time now. we're in our mid 30s and while we've never played D&D before, we're familiar (or at least I am) with some of the basic concepts of the game. We've planned a games night at the end of this month and I have the unenviable (or enviable, depending on how you look at it) task of learning the basic rules and to DM enough to muddle through an evening of the game. The longer term plan would be to have more regular meets and get better from there. I've spent the last couple of weeks reading the manuals and watching some very useful videos on YouTube and would now like to take some of this knowledge and learn a bit more. I'd be therefore looking to join a group on here who; - would be interested in taking an absolute beginner on and walking them through a basic campaign - could play on GMT, happy to play with players from around the world but I have a young family so late nights are limited - relatively the same age group Hopefully that is not too specific. If anyone is interested, please let me know. I have a lot of time and energy for this so although you might have to do a lot of walking through, it wouldn't be time wasted. Regards, Andy
What edition(s) are you looking to play?  Do you have a particular day of the week that works better than others?
Hi Gary, Thanks for getting back to me. I bought the starter kit and the intention was to build from there if things proved enjoyable. I assume this is 5th edition as it talks about being the latest version? I also downloaded the basic player and DM rule books. In terms of days, I am flexible during the week after 7pm GMT as I have dad duties to attend to :-) What's the best way to get started? Andy
Hey try and look at this if you're interested! <a href="https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/79787/phantoms-of-novaria" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/79787/phantoms-of-novaria</a>
Hi Dee, thanks for the invite. This does look like something I am very interested in. Are there any prerequisites or anything I need to do before joining a game? I'm keen to jump right in but I haven't even got as far as character creation, back story ect as I have no basis of comparison on what I can/can't do. Any suggestions? Andy

well there will be held a sessions 0 next week where we roll our stats and actually do our characters, this is mostly looking to see what kind of player you are. you can look through what the other players did for their application and characters, remember this is not final. our gm gonna pick the last players out tonight. think of what type of character you want to play and what kind of class suits them. read through the first page and try fit that into your backgrounds ending. so key point being what you say is not final, your character may change. you will end up a soldier for an empire, and try and keep away from characters with status such as general, lords, prince and such things. you can use the basic Manuel as well to see what the different races and classes culture are. it could be inspiration but being a barbarian dosen't mean you have to a savage, you can be a normal miner with a bad temper because of the rage.
remember he picks the last players tonight.
