Tokens for party vision on GM layer

Hi, I was thinking about using tokens to retain already explored area inside dungeons. Just for my curiosity, what would happen if I put one of that tokens (with has sight, all players see light and players control permission) in a layer that is not objects layer? Like GM layer for example. Players would see it or it would simply disappear (and with it the property to let em see that portion of the map)?

They wouldn't be able to see it.
So I have to put it necessarely on the object layer?
Yes, but use an invisible png token so the players can't see it. They would still be able to move it but are less likely to click on it because they can't see it. Oh and give it an aura that only you can see, so you don't loose it.

If I was doing this, I'd be tempted to just drop something obviously 'not a game object' like a Big Cartoon Eye
I think you can place them on the map layer or lighting layer to avoid players moving them around, just not the GM layer; I'd test to confirm this but for some reason my maps aren't loading right now.
Great idea! Thanks.

Probably the easiest thing to do without the API would be to place these invisible sight tokens as Ed suggests, but don't give them light, only sight.  Give all players control to them.  Then put a light source on the Dynamic Lighting Layer (or map layer, or object layer) that only you control but provides light.  They'll be able to see inside the light, but if they move the vision icon, it won't allow them to reveal any more than they could already see because it's restricted to the existing light source that they can't affect. You could even have sight tokens for only the players whose tokens had been there, if you wanted.
