Looking for Players/Games

When looking at applications for games, and seeing the list how far do you go down the list to select your applicants? since when looking at some of them no one person could go through all those applications?

I tell all the applicants post in a single designated thread I make ("Interested Players Post Here" or similar title). I also tell them to post some ideas for their characters/their backgrounds, as well as their experience with the game being run. This has several upsides 1. Those who don't post in the correct thread obviously can't read instructions and will be a pain to deal with in my game 2. You can sort through all the responses at once and pick the ones that sounds like the best fit, using whatever criteria are important for your game: specific character classes, interesting character stories, specific time zones, new players, old players, optimizers and/or roleplayers, etc. etc. However, if you haven't done that, I would recommend looking through posts equal to 2-3x the number of players you are looking for (e.g. if you are looking for 5 players, check out 10-15 application posts). That many should give you some variety, and should at least give you some criteria for what you want in your players. Once you find a few applications that really call to you (for whatever reason), click through more apps looking for the same things until you get the number of players you want. Maybe keep a list of backup choices somewhere too, in case one or more of the players cannot make it. Hope this is helpful. Good luck with your campaign!
As a respectable GM, you should go through all the applications. The trick is to post all the stuff that your game has to offer and eliminate anyone that might not be a good fit. An example would be your focus on the playstyle if you are someone that likes cinematic sequences more than action then that in itself will make players that want the other end to exclude themselves from the application. But as a general consensus, you should look at all your applicants' applications. You don't have to respond to them all, you can just say to expect something from you if they look promising but you should definitely read all the applications.
