A bit of a basic question, but I want to play a dungeons and dragons game in December. Not sure how to go about it.

I really have two questions about using Roll 20 to play a game such as Dungeons and Dragons. The first one is, should I make a character before I look for a group? I think I have the books some where, (An impulse buy from a few years ago.) and I think they're fourth edition. Or do I have to do it in the game? Second, I would like to start by playing one session. The reason is, I don't know what my work schedule will be like in from here till the new year. I expect to work 35-40 hours a week, and possibly more because of the Holidays. Even if I'm supposed to be off, I might get called on. So if I guess if I get off early, like before 3 or 5 pm eastern, I probably won't get called back. Is it possible to find a group running something within a few hours of that? One that might not mind having a guy who can't join up on a consistent bases? Anyway, I'm gonna give the books a thumb through in the next couple of days. Learn a little about this. Sorry if the questions are a bit basic, and thanks in advance.

1) Different GMs have different creation methods. I would prepare some character concepts and then be ready to modify them to suit the game. 2) Some GMs host one-offs. I suggest looking for one of those. Some game systems have leagues (such as Pathfinder's "Pathfinder Society") where the games are just a series of one-offs. I suggest searching the Looking for Group listings and the Looking for Group forum.
Hey man, So I am fairly new to roll20 but it seems like you just go to the "looking for group" button and type a time frame you want to play and see what happens. There are allot of "One Shot" campaigns that play through a single quest then quit and also someone might post like a one time game where you play one time and move on. I have seen not much consistency so far in playing weekly when it says they do. I was supposed to play a game tonight that never happened. I would say apply to many. Try them out when you can and pick your favorites. Character creation is usually done within the game on a site called mythweavers. Allot of people use that and you can make Pathfinder, Dungeons and dragons, Shadowrun, etc. also a helpfull site is http://www.d20pfsrd.com/ for making Pathfinder characters. Which is the new dungeons and dragons apparently I have a prerolled character that I have offered into a few games and no one has replied to me about them. Allot of people use the roll 4D6 and drop the lowest and then others use whats called a point buy, this will hopefully help you understand point buy http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/gettingStarted.html#ability-scores So I hope I have helped you out. Like I said I am fairly new but I try to be helpful and so far this information and sites I have shared is basically the help I have received thus far. Happy gaming.
The key is letting people know what nights and what times you can play and that you might have to work , and you are new. You can find a group like that by posting as you have, or posting to specific games. I personally like it when a player is flexible and can say "I want to be a fighter, that has had his kingdom wrecked and seeks revenge." "I want to be a smuggle like Han Solo." "I want to be a space scout making discoveries, that thinks guns are too dangerous to carry." "I'll play a good cleric or a neutral thief." I respond and we go from there. There are people from around the world so there are games running all day. Australia, UK, and US all have games going on, so it's not too hard to fit, if you look, especially if you play 3.5 or pathfinder. Lots and lots of those games. Even more so if seeking a game, if you are a GM of a game, players will seek you out since way more people would rather play, than embark upon the work it takes to be a GM, or they simply have too much going on with job, or school and family to GM properly and they know it. Good luck in your search, all my games are beyond full, sorry.
