LFP DnD 5e Weekly Game Using Frog God Games materials. New Players Welcome to Experience Old School Awesomeness 18+

These will be adventures worth winning!  I am looking to run a DnD 5e campaign based in the Lost Lands, the official setting of Frog God Games: purveyor of goods using new rule-sets but with an old school flair. I am the best teacher, so new players are absolutely welcome. I find they tend to think more "outside the box" which is an element of old school games where you aren't able to roll your way out of a situation. Constance vigilance will be required.   Please be able to commit to a weekly game of 4 hours. Saturdays at 3pm PST. The game will be for ages 18 and up. I will stream audio and video from Facerig because I think it is funny and my face scares little children. You can do whatever you want. We’ll use discord as an audio backup in case there are issues with roll20. Summary of Setting Play will begin in a large city and the surrounding area. The first two meetings will be fairly linear, leaving the players the issue of how to solve the problem (but not the ability to pick the problem). It will grow more open-world (sandboxy) from there, but Frog God Game's strength is in writing old school dungeon crawls where the players have to figure out how to not die. So it will be like a contained sandbox. Constance vigilance!  Feel of the Game Your characters will be small fish in a big pond. So it will not be like Critical Role where wherever the players go they that the world has been specially crafted just for them. The world will be the world and player backstory will be woven into it. It will be up to the players to be the agents of change. The ration of roleplay:battle will lean more towards battle. This does not mean hours of endless meaningless battle. It just means the player has to make different choices in how they approach things.  Character Creation Player's Handbook (PHB) only, standard stat array, no feats. If you need help making a character we'll set up a time to walk through that together. It will require constanct vigilance. Character customization will primarily be done via the narrative. So the player will be responsible for earning boons and magical items. These will be what will make the characters unique, so extra classes and archetypes are unnecessary. Boons could be things things that act similarly to feats or class features or abilities that exist outside the PHB, but don't come in planning on getting something specific. Boons will fit in with the narrative and character choices and are often at the will of the gods who are quite capricious. This means that some part of character development will be outside your control so you will have to take that risk if you want a possible reward. Paladins are Lawful Good. If you want to play a non-Lawful Good “Paladin” then pick a different name for your class. Warpriest, for example. Or Knight of the Angry Charter. I don’t care. But you are not a Paladin. However, any spell that states, “Does an extra 3d6 damage to a paladin”* will still deal the extra damage to you. Rangers People on the Internet believe they PHB version of rangers is too weak. Others believe the Unearthed Arcana version is quite strong. If you are interested in playing a ranger I will make a slight buff to the PHB ranger, but will have to look into it further, depending on what you're going for. Old School Style DM None of the NPCs follow the rules for PCs. Rules rulings: I am typically fairly linear in my thought process so odds are that I will make rulings consistently. (eg, there may exist a race feature where the frog-people have the ability to jump away without provoking attacks of opportunity. Such things are not put in to screw the players but are to push the narrative of how awesome these frog-people are, if they even truly exist). However, I have more experience in other systems so I may get some things wrong about 5e and will welcome corrections. DM will still always maintain final control.  Some areas will be above your power level and running away may be the only choice. A glorious death is not guaranteed. Sometimes you just die to an especially dangerous trap at the front of the cave. Part of what makes epic gaming moments is all the hard work and failure it took to get to them so they cannot be handed out freely. Sometimes the world just isn't fair. But you will endure. And use a replacement character to get back into the game. Character Death Resurrection will be difficult/limited. Players will not be casting resurrection. Constant At the onset, each player will create two characters, in case one dies. The backup character should be maintained at the same level as main character so you can get back in the game quickly. All players will always be at the same level.  To “earn” more replacements, you must befriend NPCs in game which will make them recruitable and at player death they will become playable. Not all NPCs are recruitable. This encourages non-murder-hoboism and creating diplomatic solutions to some encounters as well as provide enough tension regarding player death. Vigilance To Join Respond here to keep all replies in the same spot. After the weekend I'll go over them. You don't need to create the character yet. I just need a short paragraph (maybe two) of backstory on the general concept of your character. Character can be developed and expanded upon during play. So a sprawling backstory is not necessary. (or put another way: long backstories are better left for novels) I like the Personality Traits concept on page 123 of PHB. So make sure you include an ideal, bond, and flaw that you like. It creates a really compact character concept.  If you have seen Dice, Camera, Action (on twitch or youtube) then you are familiar with Simon and his personality traits are quite good. He is a court jester construct who has some... issues. Here is his personality traits: Ideal: "I wish I could make people happy." Bond: "I would like to find someone--anyone--who isn't afraid of me and who enjoys my company. Flaw: "When I'm upset, I do bad things." Once we reach level 7 we'll evaluate the campaign and see where we're at. See if you still like me. See if we're compatible and fun as a group.  One possibility: A particularly good Frog God Game campaign starts at a higher level, so we may "transport" to that area. It's in the same general area, and you through the course of the campaign you should find some clues about it. It may require a "soft-reset" on magical items. This would allow me to be more generous with magic items at lower levels without having to worry about long-term balance (plus if the characters get too rich, they won't want to adventure any more. And the focus will be on adventuring, not nation building).  Thanks for listening!  EDIT Forgot to mention: no evil or chaotic evil characters. All characters are assumed to be friendly and on the same team.  *may or may not applied to every spell with the evil descriptor
hello! I would really like to join your campaign. I'm looking to play a wood elf druid if that is fine with the you. I would like for him to be neutral, neither  good nor evil but understands we need both parties for the balance of life and nature. my ideals would be simple. i understand life needs to be balance and i will do what i can to keep it so. my bond lies with wolves i am a sucker for them for i have been raised by them for the majority of my life. my flaw is I cannot tell the difference between good and evil only purpose. I Grew up with a pack of wolves being my only kin. i never really knew much of my parents by the age of 30 i have traveled from town to town and village. i was able to pick up the language common from walking around places. since i grew with wolves they gave me an insight about the balance of nature and things happened for a reason. Even though i was not able to speak with them. i was able to communicate with them through body language and insight.  This is a small paragraph of what I would like my character to be. I hope to hear from you soon
Well, this all sounds really well put-together and really interesting! Hope that I can end up joining in! When it comes to character creation, I do generally end up selecting a character that best complements the party at hand (which so far has led to me strictly playing Clerics... I wouldn't mind breaking out of that class for once.) So, if I weren't to be another Cleric (though if I were, I'd pick a domain and character that I haven't experienced yet, like Knowledge or something), I would like to be a Half-Orc Barbarian! It's always a bit difficult for me to go and be a character with a lower intelligence score (because I have to purposefully block out meta-reasoning and go with the perceptions of the character), but I do well at it once I've committed to the character's viewpoint. So, with that in mind: Grawr is a Half-Orc Barbarian that has actually had a pretty good life so far. Yeah, sure, his home was a bit far from the village, and his mommy often told him to stay inside the cave like a good little runt (comparatively speaking), but hey - the kids from town would often come by to expand his rock collection! How thoughtful of them. When mommy found out, she went to say 'thanks' for Grawr, and then the people held a big goodbye party with torches and everything. Well, Grawr is now out in the world (which may be a bit more frightening of a concept for the general populace than not) and ready to gather up all sorts of treasures and shiny-s to the family to spruce up their new lodgings. Oh, and Grawr likes talking about himself like Grawr's talking about himself. You know, three-people pointy views and what-not. Ideal: Everyone can end up happy with enough talky-talk amongst the smarter people. Grawr just wants gold. Bond: One day, Grawr will have his own cave and whelps, but Grawr needs to give back to Grawr's first family first. Flaw: For a barbarian, Grawr's pretty timid... until Grawr's raging. Then run. Run far away. Grawr's really just got a switch operating between those two emotions. Well, that was a bit longer than expected, but I hope that outlines the character well enough! Hope to hear back from you later.
This sounds really nice. im a new player so i would need some assistance in setting up a character thought, i dont mind changeing character to fit into the group more but i honestly would love to dicuss the classes a little bit before chooseing. and if you are in a rush to start a game then i wont mind playing a fighter, ranger or a druid something funny! :) i hope it's ok i think about the backstory some more, i would prefer useing some xtra time on this :)

Hi, Names EJ and I would be interested in join your campaign. I'm 25 and have been playing D&D (only 5e) for the last year. I would like to play a Half-Elf Ranger named Merrick Ravenwood. Merrick is a bounty hunter by trade not because he really cares about punishing those who break the law, and not because he wants the money. Though the money is nice and helpful, he's a bounty hunter for the thrill of chasing down Intelligent creatures, who can think and maybe give him a challenge when caught. Merrick's preferred weapon of choice is a longbow so he can shoot his targets from afar, however he also on occasion uses two shortswords he dual-wields when hes fighting in a enclosed space. Merrick learned how to hunt and fight from his elven father when he was young, however around the time he was ten his elven father stopped visiting him and his human mother. Because of this Merrick started to hate his father and he places some of that hatred and resentment towards elves he meets. Ideal: Everyone is either "The Hunter" or "The Hunted", if you don't keep improving you will eventually become someone else's prey  Bond: Find his full elf father and make him pay for abandoning him and his mother Flaw: Mistrusts all full elves he meets

Hey this sounds like fun.  Totally new to Roll20 so that would be my main stumbling block, but have been playing DnD 5e for more than a year now and feel fairly comfortable in the system.  Really just more interested in exploring an interesting world and story together.  I like playing mages and have an idea for a wizard with plenty of character development available down the line. -------------------- Bertrandameer "Bertie" Heatherbottom IV ,   Halfling Wizard, True Neutral Bertie comes from a noble family of Halfling bankers.  He grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth but has always wanted more than a life of upper crust social functions and money lending (though his childhood has firmly instilled in him a sense of entitlement).  From a young age, Bertie had been intrigued and amazed with the fantastic magics of the wider world; however, his family and community have always shunned magical pursuits in favor of a more "down to earth" livelihood - i.e. money money money.  As a result he has dutifully trained to continue the legacy of his house, but he isn't satisfied.  Thus for the last few years he has surreptitiously been matriculating at the local wizarding school.  Bertie just recently graduated with his elementary wizard levels and was only too keen to continue his studies when fate intervened.  His parents discovered his spell book and have issued him The Ultimate Ultimatum:  either give up on his magical studies or be disowned and expelled from the family (and in all essence his community). Bertie is choosing magic of course, but he still cares deeply about his family and how they view him.  He sets off on a journey to become a wizard of high renown and to prove that you can be more than what others imagine for you.  It should be remembered that while the magical world is of deep fascination for Bertie, he still grew up privileged and he is in for a very rude awakening in how the world really works. Ideal:   I must prove I can handle myself without the coddling of my family.  //  Nothing should fetter the infinite possibility inherent in all existence. Bond:   I will face any challenge to win the approval of my family. //  Magic is the deepest mystery of the world and deserves the utmost respect. Flaw:   I secretly believe everyone else is beneath me.  //  I am easily distracted by the promise of magical information.* Appearance wise, Bertie is really into rabbits and bunnies (you'd have to ask him why) and so he had a magical milliner create a wizard's hat with rabbit ears poking out the top of it.  The ears are bewitched so that they appear to be real, twitching and moving along with the wearer's emotions, but they provide no physical or magical benefit to the wearer.** -------------------- *I mixed ideals & flaws from the Noble and Sage backgrounds to better flesh out the character, hope that's okay. **Also if this detail is too much I don't mind changing it.  I just really like the idea of this tiny little wizard who likes to imagine himself as a rabbit running around firing off spells.  No problem if he can't have the ears.  lol
Hello, my name is Lucas. I am interested in joining this campaign with you all. I am 26 and I have been running a IRL dnd campaign (6 to 7 players weekly) for the past year and a half and as well as attempting to find a campaign where i can be just a player. My playstyle is lets make a character/ story  and then base the roll play around that which also sometimes means i like to think outside the box mechanically speaking ( using shape water to freeze a lock open). I have a few characters in mind for this campiagn and am willing to choose which ever you think would work well for you and the rest of the players. Kevin (Human sorcerer (Dragon Red)) a orphan who can't get a hold of what is going on with his body. traits: I don't understand anything to do with magic. I ask a lot of questions though. Ideal:I like to help the people who help me. Bond:No one should have to endure the hardships I've been through Flaws: Fire can clear any mistake or problem Rave'n Shadeward (High elf rogue) a noble hermit decides to see what the world outside the grove is like traits: LOS: I retreated from society after a life-altering event. I connect everything that happens to me to a grand cosmic plan.  Ideal: Meddling in the affairs of others only causes trouble whether its beneficial remains to be seen. Bond: I entered seclusion to hide from the thing that might still be hunting me. I must confront it someday. Flaw: Now that I have returned to the world I enjoy its delights a little to much Dread McMill (teifling warlock) a being with darkness inside reaching for things gentler and good. traits: I see omens in every event and action. The gods try to speak to us, we just need to listen. Ideal: I seek to prove myself based on my actions not my infernal heritage. Bond:I am willing to help anyone who seems to have good intentions Flaw: I am sometimes given into my infernal legacy/rage. Zoon Gemancer (rock gnome Druid) a student who struggled learning arcane only to succeed in natural magics traits: there noting like a good mystery Ideal: nothing should fetter the infinite possibility inherent in all existence Bond:I sold my soul for this power. I hope to use for grand deeds and win it back Flaw:I overlook obvious solutions for more complicated ones and if you allow monster races Znot sparcfings (goblin wizard) a goblin curse with human intellect and then trained to use it to its full extent. traits: I was, in fact, raised by humans Ideals:Life is like the seasons. in constant change and we must change with it. Bond:I am the last of my tribe and must make a name for them Flaw: the living serve multiple roles why can't the dead looking forward to this adventure.
Hey there! My name's Nathan. I love the sound of the world you're creating. I'm brand new to DnD (never played before...) but would love to join in if you'd be willing to have me. This is what I've come up with so far for a character: Glory , Tiefling Cleric, Lawful Good Glory originally grew up as a prankster and hooligan; stealing small trinkets from neighbors, nabbing purses from the rich who were greedy and foolish enough to carry around so much gold, stuff like that. This all changed when he made the terrible mistake of defiling one of the temples; in a fit of rage, the God (tbd when I know the Deities of the world)  swarmed into his consciousness, crushing his will with terror and anger and gave him an ultimatum: serve the Gods he had always reviled for the rest of his days and help their followers to atone for his wrongdoings, or die an agonizing death, then be sent to Burning Hells. Unable to find a way out, he agreed to a life of servitude, and the God stripped him of his old Infernal name, rebranding him "Glory," a testament to the God's unfailing strength against his enemies. Originally resentful of his enslavement, through his prayer and meditation, Glory has realized the wrongs of his old ways, and now hopes to help others find the path to righteousness by spreading his story, hoping to prove that anyone can turn over a new leaf. Background: Acolyte Ideal: I trust that my deity will guide my actions and decisions. Bond: Everything I do is for the common folk. Flaw: I judge others, especially the unfaithful, harshly, and myself even more severely for my past.

Greetings, This sounds like the perfect fit for what I am looking for.  I'm new to Roll20, but I'm comfortable with the 5e system and I'm also reliable and respectful.  I'm interested in playing a character that I've been working on: a Dwarf Fighter named Orsik Frostbeard (Frosty).  He was the youngest gladiator to win the tournament in his city, and he left home to test his mettle as an adventurer in the open world.  Personality Trait:  I love a good insult, even one directed at me Ideal :  People.  I like seeing smiles on people's faces when I perform.  It's all that matters. Bond :  I idolize a hero of the old tales and measure my deeds against that person's. Flaw :  I'm a sucker for a pretty face.
Hello! I just discovered your post and I'm eager to get involved. I've been playing D&D for 3 years but sessions have been quite broad, thus I'm still fairly new to D&D and Roll20 but I understand the basics. But enough about me, it's now time to introduce my PC, Tobianos "Toby" Greenthumb. Toby is a Wood Elf Druid whose abilities are focused on healing and calming magic than any animal or weather manipulations like your typical Druid. Once a promising young herbologist, his village banished him for his rampant usage and growing of cannabis-like products. Abandoned in the wilderness, Toby adapted to his surroundings and carefully studied the regenerative magic of nature and the forests. Now, after hundreds of years of meditating, fasting, and "just chilling out, man," Toby believes it to be his duty to protect the earth and her creatures, and to spread the love and compassion of nature itself with all. Background: Hermit Personality Trait: I feel tremendous empathy for all who suffer Ideal: Greater Good (with a little bit from Self-Knowledge  and Live and Let Live  mixed in too) Bond: I'm still seeking the enlightenment I pursued in my seclusion, and it still eludes me Flaw: Too often I allow my "go-with-the-flow" attitude overcome my virtues and vices, allowing the flame of iniquity to burn brightly  (this one wasn't from the PHB, I wrote it myself :D)
Would love to join this game. I'm very new to DnD but am dedicated to playing if you're willing to do some coaching. My character is a dwarf ranger who grew up in a mountain village that was frequently at odds with the surrounding human and orc encampments. Several months ago, a clan of humans raided our village and very few of us escaped. My family found refuge in a dwarven colony very far from our home but they live in poverty there. I left in an attempt to find us a new and hopefully better home.  Chaotic Good Ideal: Independence Bond: Someone saved my life on the battlefield. To this day, I will never leave a friend behind Flaw: I have little respect for anyone who is not a proven warrior
This sounds like a great game, but what's the timezone/schedule going to be like?
To bring some amount of finality to this post, I would like all applications to be finished tonight, July 3rd by Midnight of whatever your local time is.
You got it! I will have my personality out by tonight or i will try my best for that.
