I just recently joined. I am not totally new to tabletop but my experience is fairly limited. I got into DnD 4th Edition while at college and really enjoyed it but now that I left I can't find a group in my area since its in the middle of nowhere. I saw a link to Roll20 on Reddit and it got me really interested. Now that I am here I am stunned by all that I can do so I was hoping there was someone who would be willing to answer what may be a lot of stupid questions. I am open to at least trying any system if it doesn't cost a lot since my funds are limited at the moment. I prefer though fantasy to sci-fi or realistic since I tend to enjoy playing the magic user or healer. Just to start with some of my stupid questions. 1. How does character creation work on Roll20. Is there a character creator for each type that I just haven't found yet or are players expected to have online builders and send the files to the DM? 2. Is there a way to view the virtual tabletop so I can get used to the interface?
You make your hcaracter sheets off-site and send a file to your GM. You can do them in game, but it's a little advanced API , stuff. AS for the second question you can create a dummy campaign in your campaign tab and fool around with it. The Wiki will help a lot there.
Robert Y., character creation is going to be entirely dependent on what system you are playing and what the GM requires. Some will want to work with you to create them. Others will direct you to various tools that they'd prefer you to use. Still others will just want to see whatever you come up with. As for checking out the VTT, you can make your own campaign to get a chance to poke around and get a feel for things. If you go to the top of the site where the black bar menu is, look all the way to the left near the pink d20. Click on "Virtual Tabletop" and it will take you to your campaigns area. Under "Your Recent Campaigns" near the top, you should see a blue button that says "+create a new campaign." Clicking on that will allow you to create a campaign. If you haven't had a chance yet, I recommend checking out the Roll20 Wiki . You can find tutorial videos and all kinds of information about the application there.
yeah a lot of GMs just have the player meet with them on Skype and the player and GM go through a book or .pdf and write it up by hand. Depends greatly on the system. not all systems have online generators, and some systems do not lend themselves to generators, because they are mostly text or narrative tags.
