Into the Mist

Adventure Blog 7/16---- No witty haikus this time though if you are feeling super awesome-o and creative, go crazy! This is gonna be a LONG one because as I said it takes you from Prologue, to Part I, Act I, of the campaign proper. The training wheels are now off and you will have MUCH more latitude in how you accomplish your goals. Point of a sword or forked tongue, or something in between, your choices.  Just as you were getting some much needed rest another loud fog horn except this time with actual, you know, fog! A thick mist bank had rolled in and another ship out of the mist. This one was quite odd and it turned out it was a "ship" in the loosest sense of the word at least as we understand a sea-faring vessel. It was more 'spaceship' than boat with an uhh, "unconventional" (read: evil as phuck) power source:  After seeing the semi-conscious human batteries powering the vessel and the fact that it was floating 30 feet OVER the water you wisely decided to not just go in guns blazing (except the Dragonborn, because well, Dragonborn barbarian rager... ;-) )  Madame Seefay revealed herself and seemed minorly annoyed and amused that you had liberated her of some of her property. She sent her partner in crime (and probable partner in love) Lord Baelstrom the man that hired you in the first place to collect the valuable resources. The entire thing was a clever ruse to get mercenaries, sellswords, adventurers, etc. in proximity to the Silent Sea and the Citadel. Apparently once they discovered how to harness blood magic fully they realized that weak willed / spirited peasants and farmers were sort of like little triple A batteries, did not last too long.  What they needed were heavy duty deep cycle marine batteries like you find on boats, stronger the person, stronger the blood, stronger the psychic "fuel". So how do we gather up the strong quickly? A-haaa! I have a brilliant idea lets get adventurers together for an adventure. Baelstrom explained that this should have been the plan from the beginning so the needless raiding and pillaging could have been avoided. Adventurers seek 3 things all of which make many of them mercilessly gullible and easy to manipulate. 1) Treasure (greed) 2) Fame (vanity) 3) Power (pride/envy)   As our Good Friends(tm) at the church of the Eye and Fist of Torm will tell you, good sinners are strong willed folk! Seefay and Baelstrom use that "sin" as fuel. The religious zealots cleanse it out of people through 'purification' (read: torture) and make them whole again. Speaking of our good friends they arrived right about the same time having never really left. They had been tailing the Fast Lily in the fog virtually since they left the ship precisely fearing something of this nature would occur.  Once they realized that not only was there active blood crystal on the ship but the --source-- of the blood crystal they had to act. The whole time, Lord Baelstrom and the Sorceress Seefay had been chasing the infused crystal thinking THAT was The Shards of Legend shattered relics of a long dead empire. ((And to their defense, why would they not? They are literal crystal shards with ominous and nebulous power laying inert inside of them. They would have absolutely no idea of something so innocent looking and plain as a metal container being the true source of Netheril power lifted from beyond the Shadow Plane)) Reality however, was quite different. The crystals were merely a side effect of something much more insidious (useful?), a dark sorcery so far beyond the realms of this world it does not even display as magic at all! But it's effect were pure magic as purple spiderlike tendrils started to consume life force on the ships deck.  A quick struggle ensued with all 3 boats full of people with -very- different motivations for seeking "The Coffee Can" rapidly trying to secure it while Baelstrom stupidly activated a device he simply did not understand how to control. With no option left to stop the reaction except to bring it more quickly to an end High Confessor Gaius Meritus Luskania took the only course of action left to him. He used his own Shard topped staff as a spear to destroy its crystalline head in proximity to the Orb and the Coffee Can. And it worked...  Some time later... hours? days? months? years? Adrift at sea on the same ship most everyone was gone excepting those in close proximity to the explosion. One of the Vindicator Paladins Thaddeus Liberatus somehow was linked to the coffee can during the massive psychic detonation and came along for the ride. After some quick Jedi Mind Tricking from Arlin the paladin spilled the proverbial beans on why the Tormites (not to be confused with Termites though maybe similar in some ways) are sooooo interested in the Shards / Artifacts. ((SIDE NOTE: I gave you the 'abridged' version during the game as to not waste time but Thaddeus rambled on quite a while as if relaying a tall tale to a good friend, here is the full excerpt below of what he communicated)) The ancient empire of Netheril which was considered the pinnacle of human evolution some 2 millenia ago delved deeply into arts and magicks the likes of which the world had never seen before. The Gods themselves felt a threat to their power, that is how mighty the mages of Netheril had become so the Gods punished and cast down all of Netheril into a cataclysm of world-breaking proportions. Centuries later, a single Netheril city survived and reappeared back in the Realms. It brought with it bizzare and alien magics even more dangerous than the more mundane ones it used before its destruction. These magics were so incomprehensible they seemed to barely function using the established 'laws' of magical power and so by definition were very unstable and uncontrollable. But man's lust for power is insatiable so they unleashed the full fury of this magic on the world and quickly rebuilt the beginnings of an empire. The Powers that Be acted much more quickly than the first time setting the single Netheril city that returned from the Shadow Plane into immediate ruination blasting it literally into a million fragments with a tremendous burst of divine energy. Thus, the Desert of Aunuroch was born and the ruins of the last Netherse city Thulanthar (The Shadow City) were wiped from existence. As thousands of years passed this story become a fairy tale to tell young mages warning them against the power of magic unchecked. Only recently, has any of this even been seen as being plausible since the rediscovery of the crystals in the mine.  ((Back to the present and YOUR part of the story which as you now see can have world changing consequence potentially)) After some experimentation and some time later it was discovered that the coffee can was ffffaaaaaarrrr more than a mere container. It did 'contain' yes, but something beyond the likes anyone in this world has ever seen and even other worlds in fact. A sentience, a presence, that seems nice enough. It gifted the group with a form of limited shared telepathy, a hive mind like insects. It also showed off some impressive small feats of orientation and location and gave a basic description of what it was, why it was, and what it can do. It is however in voracious need of "fuel" to accomplish much of anything and its fuel source is questionable at best as was seen by the "batteries" on the Sky Ship.  Recon Unit Nanite Based Artificial Intelligence Support #2341 (RUNBAIS 2341) was dubbed and thus re-born "Nano".  Not totally understanding exactly "what" Nano is but having enough of an idea having seen wizard's constructs and such before, you took its general purpose and meaning though it speaks in a strange tongue, has no sense of humor and is quite monotone, and uses magical and sorcerous words you cannot comprehend. Thus far it has not attempted to kill you or 'eat' you yet, so that I suppose is a plus!  After some quick deliberation, you were shorebound. You disembarked and started off in the strange and unfamiliar world with a sky full of foreign stars running across a group of veteran hunters. After some awkward interaction and the need to show no hostile intentions they reluctantly agreed to lead you to the road and no further with a quick. " Welcome to Barovia " P.S. Before you even ask!!! Nano explains it cannot craft the following items: Stakes, silver bullets, holy water, or crucifixes and other assorted holy symbols. :-D ;-)
I do have a sneaking suspicion us letting that letting my new best friend off the ship with some of our rations might bite us in the ass later. However he was being insufferable, so it was probably worth it... Also looking through my spell book I have nothing that will help with the whole Arlin doesn't look like a human situation at the moment. Invisibility might be coming back into play more than I thought I would need it.

Nano explains it cannot craft the following items: Stakes, silver bullets, holy water, or crucifixes and other assorted holy symbols. :-D ;-) i'm sure we can make out own stakes... buffy the vampire slayer style if we need to:  chair legs, broom handles, branches off of trees, arrow shafts.  lots of mundane options here. i don't think we as a party knows what bullets are, aside from gigantic burrowing armadillo style monsters... i don't think nano is a priest or cleric or paladin or something, so he couldn't bless water or oil things like that anyway, and if he were i'm pretty sure uriel might seek out his creators as a new patron XD...  I'll bet mystra is pissed one of the netherese cities apparently survived the cataclysm... assuming she's still alive between the editions of D&D. as for our tin can zealot buddy, ehh, i still think we should have dropped him into the drink, but... maybe if he does happen to escape maybe he'll send help and/or a rescue party? then we wouldn't have to spend the next 17 ish levels watching sunlight making various barovians skin sparkle and raindrops giving them all lush eyelashes. i was thinking about those we've got in the party that appear nonhuman and can't disguise... polymorph is a lvl 4 spell, disguise self is a lvl 1 spell, hat of disguise is a thing in 5e, maybe we can find or make a couple of those? in the meantime, might have to proclaim our shorty is a kid, or maybe a guy who just has stunted growth and our scaley as a bro with a skin condition ( maybe we can get him a hooded robe to put on over his armor diablo 2 style? ) i'll be honest. i'm not as excited to be playing the curse of strahd as i was to be playing the shards. here's hoping we can work our way through it, and here's hoping it becomes a more fun and engaging experience than the last time i was run through it.

I can take disguise self at level 5, but that doesn't let me take a 3rd level spell other than counterspell so I am hoping we find a spell scroll for it. From what I have heard of CoS I am probably SOL but I can dream.  Passing Arlin off as a child is the way to go though I think. I can hide behind people taller than me (everyone) or turn invisible if needed.

i'll be honest. i'm not as excited to be playing the curse of strahd as i was to be playing the shards. here's hoping we can work our way through it, and here's hoping it becomes a more fun and engaging experience than the last time i was run through it. I have to confess, I am -direly- curious about this statement, let me explain why and then tell me why you say this... (I'd like to hear what you experienced as I'm always interested in such things so details please) Since the module just dropped on R20 in an official capacity by WOTC I have to assume you either played a tabletop game? or some half-baked homebrew somebody tried to piece together using the PnP module. Either way, here is my take on this. A shite DM can make anything into garbage and a good DM can turn shite into gold. You follow me?&nbsp; Ravenloft is in the top 5 DnD modules of all time on just about every list ever written acknowledging such things for the past 20+ years. It is quite literally a treasure trove of roleplaying and ideas that require almost nothing from the DM himself if he just "follows the script". The reboot of it adds even more by making the structure much more open world and free-form but retaining all the gothic horrow awesomeness of the original.&nbsp; All that being said though, during my reading about this last week and my decision to take this campaign and turn it upside down this week I did see many forums stating that due to the massive scope and content of Curse of Strahd (the PnP version) even many veteran DMs and &nbsp; -- especially -- newer DMs were 100% lost and overwhelmed by it all. Like "how do I craft this into a compelling narrative / make it work??" I'm guessing your guy was squarely in that camp. I've run this entire module before many moons ago so I could limp by on that and being familiar w/ the source material. It is a module and setting for veteran DMs only and many newbs had effed it up pretty badly from what I was reading.&nbsp; If you use the Roll20 WOTC Official version (we are) and also the little .99 cent "cheat sheet" thingy for DMs it is a gold mine of awesomeness. The Ravenloft game I ran from the way back machine was universally lauded by our group at that time as one of the best modules the players had ever done. Fond memories to this very day of it. This magic may or may not be recaptured but again given the material and gothic horror shtick it should be easier than with other settings not as prepped and ready.&nbsp; Average DMs can throw a bunch of monsters at you in a non-stop meat grinder whilst you gather up new toys and levels, Diablo style. Great DMs will create characters and stories you will remember for years. I'm aiming at the number two as a goal (not saying I am great, but I've been at this a good while and am better than many, I can tell you that from having played in some utterly awful games) Lastly, you are still playing the Shards! As I said, this campaign is interwoven with various modules from WOTC. I had another official module I was about to drop on you all and simply swapped it for this one. Many people were transported during that huge explosion so it isn't as if the other story is "on hold" it is simply evolving concomitally with this one, you *have* a single Shard with you! And there are people that are aware of (or at least suspect) that.&nbsp; In closing, I'd say the DM and players make the game waaaaay more than the setting etc. I've seen elaborately setup games where like I mentioned they are flashy visually but dull because its just total hack and slash, and I've played in theater of the mind games with almost no visual representation and barebones setup that were amazing.&nbsp; TL;DR version: Less this----&gt; &nbsp; more this: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF7kqc7th0A" rel="nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF7kqc7th0A</a> P.S. I was obviously trolling a bit about Nano making anti-vampire weaponry, just taking the piss since you find yourself in a much diff. scenario then when you started the evening. :-D
i'll pm you the details. &nbsp;i don't want to spoil things for anyone. and yeah i caught the anti vamp weaponry bit, was just playing dumb but giving plausible reasons why it couldn't happen all the same.

i'm not suggesting that the campaign shift directions or anything like that, certainly not on my accord... but expect me to make a bunch of glitterskin references. hopefully it won't be disruptive. sure it's not like : <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyqEgu2M3jQ" rel="nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyqEgu2M3jQ</a>
Welcome to Barovia... Where there are plenty of Monsters to Kill.. A lot of those Monsters, look like narrow minded bigoted people. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr-DKyAVU34" rel="nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr-DKyAVU34</a>

That was some comedy gold right there. Love the Sling Blade character and Walken. Now granted, I wouldn't want that all the time but some comedic elements here & there in a very grim world are a much needed thing. I shall keep this in mind. :-D Thanks for the email and not dumping major spoilers into the thread, from what you wrote that seems very much like what I said about putting any material into untrained hands basically. And yeah, I wasn't going to modify the game on your behalf, sorry brah. LOL. You can make any references you want but other than being absurdly meta-gamey it certainly won't make them any less willing to rip your heart out so go crazy!

And that is -exactly- why I brought you here (hat tip for another great Witcher 3 trailer to follow my own) Geralt kills monsters, and this land is full of them and they often look just like the ones in both my movie and yours, the hard part is, figuring out who is who as the lines are very very blurry in this place. The other fellows that unfortunately were sent across here will likely prosper in a land where you are guilty until proven innocent since they had that bent and mindset long before setting foot on Barovian soil. Like I said in my original sticky post about alignment, etc. Moral Ambiguity is the coin of the realm. Choose wisely on these things because its impact will sometimes have very far reaching consequences.

no worries. &nbsp;metagaming is practically against my religion.

I was wondering about that. We had more than one unfriendly person on our ship at the time of the explosion. Odds are that at least a few people we don't know about traveled with us...
i also can't help but wonder what happened to baelstrom and his 2 henchmen.
See, i think we can take Baelstrom...Madame Seefay on the other hand...

Braden G. said: I was wondering about that. We had more than one unfriendly person on our ship at the time of the explosion. Odds are that at least a few people we don't know about traveled with us... If I'm being 100% honest, I've already said too much . You of course could have speculated as much that others came through as well given the magnitude of the explosion, but I've more or less confirmed that 'some' did indeed come across. Also since the ship was transported wholesale with minimal damage it goes to cause that one or both other ships came across like that as well. The war galley, whatev... its a boat so only a threat at sea. The Slave Powered Spelljamming Ship, did I say spelljamming?! I meant Happy Jamming, errmm, &nbsp; The Super Happy Battery Ship&trade; is a question mark given its very nature is tied to the same power source as the artifacts (shards). And a tremendous amount of power would (should) be required to move it about. It would turn this place upside down just by itself however as you can likely imagine.&nbsp; I mainly did this to assauge any Nervous Nellies (*cough* Erik) that this wasn't going to be the Ravenloft minus The Shards game he feared. They are already spliced together in inseparable ways and its growing this whole week as I'm starting to think of really nifty ways that something as obvious as blood / essence draining gems and artifacts would sort of be a natural fit in a land full of vampires and undead. :-D&nbsp; I have put together this helpful and ultra dank meme to aid you!

LOL, yeah I can work with the 2nd one too. The Count was one of the best characters on the show by far. And Dave Chapelle did a really funny stand-up bit about him one time you can easily look up and check out. Something about how much like a medeival pimp he was.... ;-D
The Count is Amazing
