I'm currently messing about with an oracle, sorcerer, or maybe bard build. What are your opinions?

Bards are always fun, but Oracles are cooler. I'd go Oracle.

Hi folks, and welcome to Roll20. However, this is not the place for this type of conversation; these message boards are open to the general public, and this in particular is used for discussions of things only somewhat related to the system. What you need to do is decide who is going to be the GM of the game itself; that person can then Create Campaign, and invite others to join using a given Join link. The campaign, once created, will have a message board of its own, privately, that only people who have joined the campaign can read. Moved to Looking for Group. However, Phnord is correct, what would best serve you is creating your campaign and using that as a private message board.
