Yeah so, not much to say after that LONG post on the first entry, going minimalist on this one. Ima just leave these here, because, umm... yeah. :-) (mind scrubbing commence in 3...2...1...) EDIT: Just a quick aside, that was a bit of a slower session than what I normally go for, but there are 2 reasons for that. 1) Stranger in a strange land. There was some setup / exposition that needed to happen and couldn't be avoided. Now after seeing these sort of pitiful souls throughout town, the utterly odd behaviour / personalities of the NPCs you met, and -- especially -- after "the kids" your characters have a better understanding that this is a very jacked up place you are in. And 2) Curse of Strahd, by design, is extremely open-ended / free form. You are given latitude to sort of do whatever you want in any order. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't want to put the module on rails, but I will bake in some 'safeguards' from next week on to just make sure we stay at least somewhat on script / message if too much meandering occurs. :-) P.S. In the plus column, you've gone 2 gaming sessions with basically almost no-combat and it hasn't been horrible. That says a lot IMHO about not only the DM but the players as well. Normally a non-combat game can REALLY suck badly. I have wanted to claw my eyes out on more than one occasion in games that become storytelling sessions w/ no combat but that is a pacing issue most of the time. It is again, not my preferred game style to be sure. As I said, I roll with a 50/50 split most of the time but there are times when it will swing heavily one way or another. Me jumping the rail on the entire setting required lots of new story, background, setup. Now you are 'in the zone' so it will swing back towards the middle. Get into a big crypt or a dungeon? It will likely be several sessions of "no talk, more kill". Just kinda the way things roll sometimes.
Yup, falling asleep last night while thinking of creepy ghost children crawling on the roof that can rip out your throat was great.
Party walking in like

actually, i kinda liked it. maybe it's the continual hack n'slash adventures on roll20 that's left a bad taste, but i like to think i'm a ROLEplayer first, and a ROLLplayer a distant second. besides, character building-ness that being said, i had to scrub my brain twice... once of creepy kid on the ceiling, and again after seeing the mlp picture up there. call me old school, but my little pony ( to me ) should have stayed like this: but getting back on topic, i think onyx had the right idea pulling a kool aid man " NOPE " and bailing. tempted to do the same, make a uriel shaped indention through the nearest wall right next to his roger rabbit style if i have to. was also reading up on bard schools. how do you guys feel about matt mercers college of the maestro ? EDIT: LOL@Amanda that reminds me, i wish i'd taken the " friends " spell, or charm person maybe... would have hit the shopkeep, constable, and/or issac with it for the lolz
Running is fine in theory, except I am pretty sure Arlin in this scenario is the slow friend that everyone just has to outrun to escape the bear, or demon children in this scenario... so I would prefer not to have everyone leave me in the dust. Just my two cents. I enjoyed the last 2 sessions, felt like world building more than us being dragged from one encounter to the next. I do like that 50/50 split but figure it's going to average out in the long run, and not every session needs some RP and some combat. Although back to our plan, let's not leave the gnome. Please?
We won't leave him behind, as long as Arlin is fine being carried football style, under the arm, or even piggybacked out of the house.
course not. arlins a valued member of team us. uriel will drop his pack to grab the arlin and hang glide him out of there, if absolutely necessary... assuming arlin dosen't weigh much, in which case, they'd drop like stones ) i'm assuming we were upstairs... and i think arlin and uriel have the same ground speed anyway (25 ?), so that's a thing as well.
Arlin is a gnome, it was expected that he would be thrown at some point so he's okay with being carried. We have feather fall, we can jump off cliffs. Let's just not make it a habit...
But why would we ever run? They just...

or this one, which is decidedly cuter, and i might play a game or even watch the show if it had this kind of detail in it. not gonna lie, i played the crap out of the first one that came out though. source: https://www.artstation.com/artist/joshuadunlop

Amanda said: But why would we ever run? They just... Yeah, I really don't understand the hub-bub on this thread. Thus far the incorporeal child floating around the ceiling (lmao, its just fun to say that phrase, innit?) as well as her sister who is excitedly clawing her way through the stairs haven't threatened you in any way !! And in point of fact, flatly told you they just want to play with you. I mean what could be more innocent than 2 children wanting to play!? I think the Barovian air and paranoia of the population, sadly, has already started to affect everyone even this early on... In the comedy column, I played a tiefling sorc recently in one of my games who's nickname was "Burninator" so when Sana is like "I HAVE FIRE, I can burn this place" that was hilarious as I could totally see my own character going that same route too. :-D Not to mention when you are dealing w/ weird creepy stuff the default position is KILL IT WITH FIRE so that just makes sense. As for the general consensus above that everyone was cool w/ the pacing that is good to know. That helps me as a DM creating the world and with tempo, structure, etc. to build a compelling narrative. I really like to let the plot unfold as organically as possible but I know as a player if I get more than 3 sessions or so w/o combat my trigger finger gets itchy sometimes so this gives me a baseline for the group. When I am running a game particularly one of this scope my goal is primarily a storyteller with referee (GM) as a secondary goal. Just like Erik said about being a Roleplayer with rollplayer just the supporting piece. The best games I've ever played have been like that and they are quite rare. It is the reason so many novels are shite but some are truly memorable and amazing. The gold standard I use when thinking about story and plot is from a movie series (and novels) that is the ultimate pinnacle of "epic story" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6C8SX0mWP0 A great quote here about how it all should work in a movie full of really great quotes.

Right? Completely innocent children who so far have done nothing but offer to entertain us while their mother makes us a lovely dinner! For shame all of you! Judging people based on appearances! This is why people like Uriel and Sana have to wear cloaks. *Sob* So disappointed! See, the problem is...Sana likes to ignore the practical little voice(I.E. me screaming at the top of my lungs NOPENOPENOPE) in the back of her head that is says to burn this creepy ass house with the children inside. So she's gonna want to play. Someone please stop her. And on the note of the game flow, I think it helps that everything in the rping part has been based on our actions. It wasn't like we were just sitting on our hands and waiting for combat to start, you gave us a couple of opportunities to be naughty but as a group it was decided that 'heeeeey maybe we shouldn't fight the strange forest men or the armed militia of an unknown place'. I mean, honestly we could just go sprinting into the fog if we wanted to start something XD
Pffft, not even if my Character was Geralt, would I just go happily into the Mists. Although Now that I think About it, Didn't Matt Mercer write up a Class a lot like a Witcher.. cause Thats what we need. As for the Gnome, your welcome to Catch a ride anytime, and if I see anyone dallying in between me and the wall, plan on being scooped and carried. (Don't worry I will rage and take the damage for you.) And anyone with a Lifespan as short as a humans or shorter should really think twice before engaging in Paddycakes with the Incorporeal Undead. And that's not Meta, that's just common sense, err I mean Superstition..lol
the bloodhunter class. it's looks kinda neat
