The most common method is to have a sheet setup for the various AoE types with default tokens being set to the right size and shape before hand so that you can quickly drag and drop them onto the VTT in the same way as you would a character token. Bonus points for having the token set to 'is drawing' to allow for quick and non-snapping positioning.
