Interest Check - OD&D Ruins of Undermountain

Welcome to Undermountain, the Deepest Dungeon of them All! In the glory days of Waterdeep, countless adventurers braved the descent from the Yawning Portal Inn to test their mettle against the most dangerous and mysterious dungeon in the known world. Countless adventurers never returned, but some of those who did brought tales of magic and bags of treasure, both mundane and arcane, back to the surface with them. The most successful of their number were able to retire on the profits of a single delve, for the riches and the fame that both brought. Then the collapse of a Gate system within the dungeon nearly caused the collapse of a large portion of the city, and the Lords of Waterdeep ordered all known entrances sealed and references to the dungeon stricken from all records. Generations of prosperity have passed, the reins of power handed from one council of Lords to another, and wittingly or unwittingly the new proprietor of the Yawning Portal Inn has rediscovered the long-closed gateway. Reinstating the traditions of old, he is charging adventurers a princely sum of one gold coin for passage into the dungeon, payable upon return. Long-forgotten treasure lies waiting in the halls of Undermountain. Who is bold enough to heed its call? *** This game would be an OD&D hack of the Undermountain dungeon (Forgotten Realms) using the Labyrinth Lord rules and taking a troupe-style approach to dungeon-crawling mayhem. Each session would represent one excursion into the infamous bottomless dungeon to seek adventure, mystery, and wealth beyond compare! I'm looking to gauge interest from the community for a game of this nature, probably at around 10pm or later UTC-8 on variable nights of the week. (Pacific US) There would be no ongoing commitment, the barrier to entry is low (Labyrinth Lord rules are easy to learn and available free for download at http://www.goblinoidgames.com/docs/GBD1001_no_art.... ), and it's guaranteed to test your dungeon-crawling mettle. Any takers?
I Always wanted to try labyrinth lord, but just no time to join up on this but wow, wish I had the time. Luck.
More info on how this would work: 1. This campaign will use the Labyrinth Lord basic rules based on the original edition of Dungeons and Dragons. Those rules are available at the address below for free: http://www.goblinoidgames.com/docs/GBD1001_no_art.... 2. Periodically the gate to Undermountain will be opened. This will be announced on the campaign page as the "next play" date and also in a separate thread tracking gate openings on our campaign forum. Any player of the campaign who is online and joins the game at that time will be a part of the party of adventurers making its way into the dungeon together with one character, which can be either a character they have previously used in the campaign who is neither Lost nor Dead, or a fresh Level 1 character taken from the pregenerated array I will provide (don't worry, there is very little mechanical customization involved with Labyrinth Lord characters at level 1--everything meaningful you can customize will be left blank on the sheet provided and you can choose from the goodly sum of available characters). 3. Each session will consist of one and exactly one trip into the dungeon. Any character trapped at the end of the session and reasonably prevented from returning to the surface with the party at the scheduled ending time (usually 3 hours after the session start time) will be considered Lost and join the Wall of Honored Dead in the inn. If the party decides to return to the surface, the session will end after bookkeeping is sorted out. If some members of the party decide to return to the surface alone before the end time due to injury, desire to recover treasure, etc., those players will be done with the session and bookkeeping for them will be sorted out later. 4. At the beginning of each excursion the group will nominate a Caller who will determine the party's marching order and be the communicator of the party's movements through the dungeon. If the Caller is slain or Lost, a new Caller will be nominated by the group. At any time, the group may call a vote to change its caller due to a lack of confidence or any other reasons deemed appropriate by the players. 5. Except as noted in 3, above, and in certain cases when it may be necessary for the purposes of surrounding an enemy, covering multiple entrances to a chamber, etc., the party will not be split. If the players decide to split into two groups, the smaller group will be considered to have returned to the surface (i.e. their session is ended) and the larger group continues on. This is to keep the session focused and moving forward--you cover less than half as much ground per team switching between two groups. 6. Experience will be awarded at the end of each session according to monsters slain and treasure recovered. The total for the group will be used in this calculation, no matter who takes possession of the treasure or who did the slaying. Retainers and henchmen will receive a half-share of the experience total and monetary compensation as agreed upon when they are hired. Note that experience rewards are much greater for treasure recovered than for monsters slain.
What the heck, I've got a campaign started for this if anyone wants to join. As noted, there's no ongoing commitment--you play when you want to play and no more. https://app.roll20.net/join/279943/Sj4C2A
This looks like fun. :)
I wouldnt mind to join mayhaps :) Should I roll up a character alone or with you?
Read item #2 in the post above and go ahead and join the campaign if you haven't already! p.s. first expedition leaves at 10pm pacific time [utc-8] tonight.
Oh, sorry, missed that. I was at work this session, but I hope to take part of an expedition in the future. I was actually alittle inspired and may end up throwing something like this together for ADnD :)
Not a problem--planning for the next expedition is under way, chime in on the forum!
Only one fatality in last night's delve (silly wizard set himself on fire), plus two close calls. Join the excitement! Test yourself against the Most Dangerous Dungeon! Compete for bragging rights against your fellow adventurers, succeeding where they have failed. next delve is still being scheduled, so join up and make this one yours!
How do you guys deal with a non english native speaker? I do speak It as my second language Tho. I just need some time to get my brain going. And if things get crazy I can always use the chat box.
All are more than welcome. I think we had a non-native speaker last time.
Will you be able to make your way through the submerged passages to the Fountain of the Crying Lady and return a vial of her tears to the surface world? Peril and rewards await in the twisting tunnels of Undermountain!
The Yawning Portal opens tonight at 9:30pm UTC-8. Whether you end up drowning in a pool of your own blood on the cold dungeon floor, or returning to the warm firelight of the Yawning Portal Inn with a pack full of riches and a week's worth of unbelievable tales, Undermountain is sure to challenge and entertain!
Another expedition, another bold adventurer lost to Undermountain. The annals of history will hardly note the passing of Whatshisname the Elf, whose throat was torn out by ghouls and threatened to wipe out his own party when he rose again as one of the foul creatures. can you do better?
Shaun H. said: can you do better? I absolutely could and this sounds like a blast but it starts way too late for me. It would be midnight where I am. Anyway best of luck!
Luke :P I played 6.30 in the morning last time :P but I think its not the same time all the time.
It starts 11:30pm for me which makes the next day a bit rough with two little kids that wake up super early. As stated in the game forum, if a group works together to get an individual party together they can establish a time and the GM will likely be able to run with it. Personally I prefer a 9-9:30pm CST (GMT -6) start time.
