New to tabletop and online play player looking for friendly group!

Hey Gamers! I have never participated in a online play but am willing to try it. So I need a group of patient players as I might not be the fastest learner(I am 40y).Not that I am stupid, just a bit slow when computers is in play. roll20 also feels a bit daunting. My gaming career began when I turned 12, mainly with D&D.
What timezone are you in, and when can you play?
Great! A reply! Well I live in GMT +1 and do not have a 8-5 job(I am a crane opperator) but hopefully my wife will let me play in the weekends. Usually that means, if you live in US and wish to play during the daytime i will use my evenings, but that is my issue! :-)
Well I live in GMT and am still in school (-_-) so evenings would be preferable, but late-night weekends are definitely an option :)
My guess is that you live in UK? Is just under 20 years? And have played rpg for about 6 years? Just guessing - for fun! Late night/early evenings can also Work!
Yes, no and no. I do live in the UK, but I'm actually 16 and have played for about 8 months, so helping a new player will reinforce my own (quite basic) knowledge xD
Well 1 out of 3 aint bad, is it? Maybe you could set up a short one-on-one so I might learn from zero? Just fishing here!

Dont think about the rules. when I GM I use teh ones I like and forget the rest. I only want to learn how to play in Roll20 and how to interact with it.
Oliver, you might also have a look at the Wiki here, and also on YouTube. There are lots of tutorial videos on how to use Roll20. Some are basic tutorials for new players, other tutorials are more in-depth for those who wish to use Roll20 to GM their own games. Lots of good information to get you up and running on Roll20.

One of the best ways is to learn roll20 is to make your own campaign and just play with it. I spent the first 100 hrs here doing just that and watching the videos and reading the wiki. After that I started looking for a group.
I spent the first 100 hrs here doing just that and watching the videos and reading the wiki. After that I started looking for a group. 100 hrs? you have to be joking, right? Is it really required that I spend 100 hrs to learn how to play and use roll20? And THEN I begin a search for a Group? I have been on youtube and your wiki and still do not have the slightest clue of how to begin/create a campaign. If that is the case then my hopes is dropping to the ground as I write....... :-( So I have to learn how to be a player by creating my own campaign?
No, I dont believe so. To be a player all I knew when i started was how to type "/roll d(insert number) + modifier" to roll a die. If you actually want to make a campaign there's few different ways to make one. Use battlemaps from online sites (easiest way but gives you less creativity). Assuming that you have been playing for a long time (as you wrote you started playing when you were 12) you could just scan content that you have and use that, or if you really want to get into map making I recomend using programs such as Photoshop or GIMP (the free equivalence of Photoshop). Overall I personally believe you can get into roll20 really easy, you do however need more time if you want to start using all the fancy features roll20 provides.
thx Pietro. I have how tried to create my first map in roll20........it went bad!! The creation of maps and how to, and what order, put them together seems difficult to me. Further more......I am beginning to abandon the idea and go back to think of "normal" table top campaigns. For wich I still need players :-( Yes I am a quitter.
BTW, if I dont need more then knowing how to roll, then how, and where, do I create my character?
I don't hardly use a map, just voice chat and the white board to sketch. works okay. so it's like old skool, only connected via internet.
Honestly the first ever map i made on roll20 went rather horrible as well. That's why I recommend using pre-made ones or just using photoshop/gimp to put stuff together. You shouldn't think of roll20 as a completely different way to play tabletops but more of an addition to it. If you have specific questions I wouldn't mind taking some time to try and explain some things. (although I have to say I'm not extremely experienced as some people are on here and there's probably better ways to do things then I do).
Your character can just be written on a pdf, it doesnt even need to be on roll20. Theres also sites such as http://www.myth-weavers.com that let you make character sheets for about anything so you can share it with players and dms alike.
I also agree with James you really dont need to make battlemaps, sketches can also work just fine, you just need to make a few changes to rules of 4e as its based on grid battlemaps.
So, will ANY of you take me to your table and let us play so I might find out if this i something I will spend more time on? just so I can try a session!
Hi Oliver, I've not got any campaigns going at the moment, but I'm in the process of setting up a futuristic post apocalyptic campaign and probably a pathfinder campaign as well. Pathfinder is very similar to D&D, the system we're using for the post apocalyptic one isn't very similar but the basic premise of all RPGs is pretty similar. We'd probably play every other Friday around 8:00 GMT. The PA one is https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/553400/wanted-players-for-futuristic-post-apocalyptic-sci-fi-slash-fantasy-game-running-every-other-friday-~8-00-gmt#post-553681 I've not set anything up for the pathfinder campaign yet.
At the moment I dont care about system or setting, just how roll20 works as a online tabletop game! Stephen, do that mean you are playing to night? I am at GMT +1
it works as a bunch of guys talking to each other about what they are doing in the dungeon. Except you see them on a cam, and you hear them on a headset and they talk through a microphone. instead of a sketch map on a table you got the whiteboard. that's it. Good luck.
At the moment I don't have anything running as I have exams in the next weeks however I wouldn't mind taking some time (for example this weekend) to show you a bit around roll20.
If you are interested send me a private message, we can find some time when to do it.
Hi Oliver, sorry I misunderstood your initial request. I don't have anything on tonight. I'm hoping to start in about towards the end of this month.

No you don't you could just find a group and get accepted to it then just play. I spent that long to on purpose I wanted to learn the in and outs while I was building my campaign.

I might be able to help you though I'm not entirely what time it is for you right now. I'd be willing to jump into a random map list off a few things that are needed. I'm not sure if you're interested in using Roll20 as a GM or a player but either way it's fairly easy once you're used to actually playing around with it. I'd recommend using the wiki and you certainly should go on youtube to find examples of what other people are using Roll20 for. It's a great program and a tool that I've been using for awhile now.
I'm at GMT +1. I have been looking a the youtube clips and the wiki and still I can't figure out what I need to play as a player. GM'ing will come much later. But Pietro will try his best tomorrow some time during the day and then I will know if roll20 is for me. most likely I will only be a player, but we can't be shure....ever! :-)
"we can't be shure....ever!" Well said. Good luck finding a game that fits your needs.
