So here is my brief (and sad) story. Over 20 years ago my best friend and I bought the books for AD&D 2e. We were so excited! We spent weeks creating a variety of characters while we tried to find others to play with us, or groups to join. We never made it further than that. I never played a single game. Have played lots of MMORPGs, and did a bit of freeform roleplay over the years. I've always loved it... always regretted never getting to play d&d but had given up on it. Only in the last month or so did I discover that playing online was an option. Since then, I bought and read the PHB for 5E. Have created a couple of characters for play-by-post type games, but I'm dying to get into a regular group with voice (or voice/video if I must) and play in real time. Unfortunately, the only way I can be sure I'll be able to attend regularly is to play quite late. I'm in EST, and ideally would like to find a game starting somewhere between 10pm-11pm (Sun, Tues-Thurs) or between 10pm-midnight (Fri/Sat) As I'm still very much learning/discovering the game... there isn't much I'm not will to try in terms of race/class, but would prefer to start at level 1... and definitely want to stick with 5e for now. (Even though I've already ordered the Starfinder book as well.) I'm comfortable with a pay2play game as long as the first session is free to make sure there is a good synergy between DM & players.
