In Earthdawn 4E (FASA Games), the world has just survived a four hundred year Scourge, during which people hid from the Horrors that stalked the land. A decade ago they began to emerge to a world that bears little resemblance to the one in their legends: a post-apocalyptic fantasy world tinged with horror, with a heavy focus on exploration and discovery. Our Earthdawn Eastmarches campaign is based upon the Westmarches style, developed by Ben Robbins for his DnD game. The distinction is that there are no regular groups, no regularly scheduled game-night, and players drive all the action. Westmarches is a drop in/drop out, play when you can, discover the map style of gameplay for 5-50 players. The PCs determine what leads they want to follow and what locations they want to explore, allowing players to determine what content they're interested in. A GM runs the requested adventure for the group of PCs that sign up, but because Westmarches distributes the storytelling burden, a given GM is likely to play in as many games as they run. There's a little bit of gamism to encourage clique-breaking and to ensure that there's no breaking progression, like limiting just how much can be done in a given block of time, but it tends to be very plot driven, and kills the idea of 'game night'.
