CLOSED: LFG: Fate Core Intro/tutorial (ET or CT, T/T/Sat)

Hey, guys! I'm new to Fate Core, and while I have the download, I learn better hands on. Is anyone up for a one shot or semi regular game to suss out all the rules and how they work with Roll20? I'm available Tuesday or Thursday evenings or most times on Saturday in Eastern or Central time zones.

Hello Sadbhyl, I ran two one-shot games of this a few months ago , each two sessions long, which I know doesn’t help you now but I know that there still is interest in learning to play. Pat S also ran at least one session of learning to play Fate as well. I am full up on gaming right now, so the chances of me running it again soon is probably slim. If my circumstances change, I’ll run it again and let you know. However, there are folks here who have both Fate and GM experience that could take the “syllabus” and run with it. And there are several threads here on the forum that people have made to gather players to learn Fate ( here and here ), so hopefully you’ll get some Fate games in. /Matt
I'd be up for playing in a game to learn how the system works better as well. Tuesday and Thursday both work fantastically for me in the evenings and will do for the next few months. I can do Saturdays if its not weekly
Great, Matt! I'm in the same boat re: not every Saturday. We'll keep our eyes out for one of two more newbies and then set something up. I've done one world building session, and it was incredibly cool, but Comcast still confuses the heck out of me!
Cool :) Looking forward to it

It's been said before, but there are also some Fate Core demonstration videos on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOFXtAHg7vU Fate Core demonstrated on the "Tabletop" show with Will Wheaton and Felicia Day. This is a bit staged: looks edited. In reality, people would need time to set up the setting they are playing in, and decide on correct Aspects and Stunts. A good GM would not let them have completely blank Aspects and Stunts at the beginning, because characters would have "nothing in their holster" so to speak. Abundant play videos exist, that's the style now. A fan demonstrates their session on video. Hah, I'm of the old-school Prussian Railroad school of RPGs where you read the whole thing and you're on your own to run it, and the players eat what you put in their dog-dish and that's that! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0JshjZ_7tA

While the Tabletop episode *is* heavily edited, and probably better for building interest in the system than actually teaching it, starting with blank aspects and stunts is absolutely a thing you can do. In fact, it is the recommended quick start rules .
Exactly. I haven't found any really engaging tutorials, so I've been using the Tabletop episode to try to generate interest while I slog through the tutorials. I suspect there's the potential for a lot more interest over the next few months as The Adventure Zone plays out their Fate Core mini-campaign, and since they're using Roll20, some of that interest may migrate over here.
On that Tabletop episode, you really need to fwd to about the 28 minute mark, where they get into advantages. The DM writes down the created advantage, with 2 free invokes as boxes if they succeeded with style. Makes it really clear. At least I think so :P

In Create an Advantage, there is a difference whether a character is creating a whole new Advantage that didn't exist before, or if they are using a pre-existing Advantage (which was always there in the situation or location, but the player wants to make it important to the story). For a New Aspect, a Tie result will only create a boost (temporary advantage, one-use). You need a Success (at least 1 Shift on the roll) to create it with one free invocation (invoke). But for an existing Aspect, if you either Tie or Succeed, you get one free invoke. In each case, Success with Style (3 Shifts or more) gives you TWO free invokes.

Alright, everyone, we have two people interested, so we're going to run a session on Saturday, November 11 starting at 2:00 p.m. ET. We would love to have at least one experienced player to correct our errors, but I'll be GMing. We're leaving it open as far as genre to see what kind of interesting mashup we can come up with, so please join us!
While I'm not that experienced in Fate, I do now have a handful of sessions as both player and GM under my belt (not including other RPGs). I could do the above time for a first session, but after that I would prefer a Tuesday or Thursday evening time.

I am interested in playing in an intro/tutorial game in the future, but would not be able to make the session that you all have chosen. Have fun, hopefully I can get in on something else here soon. Best times for me are 10am-1pm or 12-3am EST. Friday through Tuesday. Or 10pm to 1am on Wednesdays or Thursdays.
Late to the game on this, but I would be really interested in the future. Let me know if you decide to do it again!
