Newb looking for dnd or pathfinder learning

I'm new to these table top games. I've tried getting into a few groups on this site, but usually something comes up and I have to leave early since I don't have a set group I meet with regularly.. I am interested in dnd and pathfinder the most, mostly because I know of them and they look fun. I don't have the player book for either at the moment, because I don't want to fork over 40 bucks for a book to a game i dont get to play. I'm willing to get the book though. Anyways, if theres someone that's able and willing to show me a bit of the ropes, I would appreciate it. It's tough to get into some of the games on here because everyone else knows most of what theyre doing and im pretty much completely lost lol.

All of the Pathfinder! Quite a lot of the D&D! Before you can play on Roll20, you are required to read and memorize the entirety of either system, depending on which game you wish to play. There will be a test; scoring below an 80% in either will instantly revoke your Roll20 license. The proceeding statement was a blatant lie; most GMs only require a basic working knowledge of the system, and a great many are willing to help even a complete noob learn to play! We love to help new people into the hobby, it's the only way to spread our particular form of madness! Mwahahahahaaaa! Welcome to the world of Roleplay Games!

If I knew the basics on how to make a character and stuff like what die to use when, I'd be fine, but since I don't have working knowledge of the games, I thought I might find some helpful people to fill in the blanks.
