New Roll20 GM looking for basic assets to get started

Hello, I am new to Roll20 Pathfinder GM and the quantity of content is a bit overwhelming. I believe I need basic pathfinder/dnd style assets to get started and I would like to get some steampunk and urban assets eventually as well. Anything with a lot of assets without costing an arm and a leg would be perfect. Any community favorites? Any advice on where to get started would be greatly appreciated!
There are advantages to pulling in a map as a base graphic to work from. For fantasy maps, I like to use a random map generator, like gozzys or donjon. I create a few maps until I get one I like for the basic layout, and save it as a png file on my computer. I then drop it into roll20 on the map layer, and enlarge it to whatever size I like. I can use it as is, or use it as a pattern onto which I can drop floor tiles, rugs, etc, to create a detailed setting. I then move in furniture, etc, on the token layer. Hold down the OPT key to prevent things snapping to the grid or reverting to original size as you work with them. Besides the ability to put in lots of atmosphere, you can add whole rooms or blank them out by laying textures on top of the original graphic. You can also use the original graphic to easily create a map for the players, which may not be entirely accurate depending on the changes you have made. The only problem is keeping layers in order. Do NOT send anything to the back: it will go underneath the original graphic where you can't get to it. If you have experience with Gimp or Photoshop, or even PowerPoint, you can work with images in those programs and then load them into roll20. There are a lot of free textures, tokens, and graphics in roll20, available from the Assets/Library tab. Type something in the search box and see what you get. You can change the color of an image on the tabletop by using "tint" on the Edit Token page, accessed from the gear-like symbol that shows up when you click on the image. You can make a token out of any picture file using http://rolladvantage.com/tokenstamp/ -- just drop the file onto the page and follow the directions, then download as a png. Hope those ideas are helpful.
Thank you very much for that information and advice Valerie!

If you would like a different kind of look, I make pixel tokens, here is a link with all the packs I have so far (and if you need something you dont see there, you can always send me a note and I may do a pack of that, thats why I did an elemental pack for example). https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search/?keyw... First pack I made (all possible heroes/class combinations for DnD and probably Pathfinder) https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/1403/pix... I made a pack which includes a bit of everything for someone to do a one-shot or start with a pixel game without spending much, it does include tokens from many other packs, so if you buy the others you will end with some repeated ones, but you get some ready to use maps. It has 5 heroes, goblins, spiders, a few NPCs, some props and 3 maps (town, forest, cave). https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/1887/pix... And if you like the pixel style of tokens, you can also search for Zeshio, he also makes pixelart packs in here. EDIT: Forgot to mention, you can use a program called "Tiled" for faster map making with my tilesets, then export that as a single image and upload to Roll20 (that way it loads faster and its easier to build maps).

I recently posted a token pack that contains all of the NPCs from the ZEITGEIST adventure path. It contains 146 illustrations in costume that can fit in a fantasy, Victorian, or steampunk setting. https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/2059/zeitgeist-npc-token-pack

Hi Dustin! There are a ton of amazing assets and a bunch of talented artists around on Roll20. Depending on what you need, be it tokens, maps, tiles, or just objects and decor, there's all sorts of things here that will truly enhance your games. Getting started, grabbing a tile set of two is a great way to go. Tile sets are generally reusable and you can really create a lot of dungeon crawls with them. I have several tile sets out myself as well as many other artists. Some of my personal favorites artists (other than myself) are Brass Badger, Gabriel Pickard, and Mythic Portals, just to name a few for tiles and maps, and Devin Night, Graemation, and Darkwolf for great top down tokens. Some people prefer the disc style token, and those are easy to make by grabbing any image you find on the internet and putting a border around it. I know Gabriel Pickard has some game glam that makes excellent borders for tokens too! If your looking for that retro Pixel look from classic JRPGs, Dsurion and Zeshio are beyond talented in that department! Then there's world and region maps, I have a few Hex March sets that make great hex maps, as well as a few World Map packs, and Russ Hapke has a great line of "Old World" and "Epic World" builder sets. if you're looking for city maps, I also have several sets that have ready to play city maps, as well as the tools you need to make your own custom ones. Those sets are great for reusing too, and I try to make my stuff easily compatible with other artists of similar style. Also it should be noted that Gabriel Pickard and Chibben Groove has a ton of excellent city builders and modular city maps sets, and I'm pretty sure every user on Roll20 has picked up Gabe's Medium City set, it's well worth it! If there's anything in particular you are looking for, feel free to ask, and I'm sure someone in the community can point you to exactly what you are looking for! Welcome to Roll20 and Happy Rolling! Here's a little shamelss plug of my portfolio: https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search?keywo...

Hey, I really appreciate the advice guys.I decided to get a couple of vile tile packs. For $0.01 an asset, I bet it's hard to compete with the vile tiles stuff... I am learning to use other resources thanks to some great tips as well. Thank you!

Just a reminder, folks, to keep things on-topic within threads. If you feel someone is behaving inappropriately, simply click the 'report' link and let the mods know and we'll handle it from there.
I'd recommend something a bit different from everyone else, actually. Spend ten bucks on a pro subscription for a month, and check out what you get access to as part of that $10. There are a lot of free tokens, spell effect templates, etc. available with your sub. As far as map assets go, you've found Gabriel Pickard, who is my first choice. He's a little lacking in modern-day assets, but he's got quite a few sci-fi packs, a couple steampunk ones (including one just released today that I think I'll get sometime soon), and his outdoors packs are obviously great quality, since you've already bought a couple of those. If you stick with Gabriel's art packs, I recommend getting as many of the Vile Tiles sets as you have a use for, versus the premade map sets he's got. Those are good, but Vile Tiles are his builder packs to create your own maps. Beyond that, Meditating Munky hit all the creators I'd recommend, but I'd add David Hemenway to the list as well.

I think I might try that for at least a month and see what it comes with. I was looking at dropping the $5 for dynamic lighting and extra storage space anyway. I had quite a few people share a lot of resources for free maps, art assets, and even a couple free map builders. But even still there are plenty of great artists on here giving you plenty of value for your $ For anyone looking for steampunk interiors, I bought https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/108/ste... The wooden floors and cobblestone roads were exactly what I wanted, and all the cool props are just icing on the cake For a more intensive dungeon builder set, I bought https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/1894/vi... You can't beat the value of the insane amount of pieces you have to work. The mana wells, water, and magical glyphs are a fantastic addition to anything that benefits from looking clean, expensive and/or magical. David Hemenway's props are probably next and then it will be back to Gabriel for more Vile Tiles and probably his Medium City set. Thanks everyone!
