DM LFP - The Grand Pendragon Campaign (Pendragon 5e) - Date/Time TBD

Things to know: Pendragon is an RPG system meant to emulate playing knights-errant in Arthurian legend, including managing an estate and producing heirs. It is not simply a game of adventure, although adventure is a prominent part in it. All that goes with being a knight is included in the game. It's not 'historical' in the pure sense. As Arthurian legend itself is a somewhat-timeless thing, the game setting (Although years are given) is more a mishmash of medieval things, not just Dark Ages. All players will be Cyrmic knights of the County of Salisbury in the Kingdom of Logres. This may sound like each PC is playing the same knight, but the system accounts for differences in personality with Traits and Passions. While all will uphold chivalry, fealty, and the like, there are differences between them. Sir Lancelot and Sir Palomides were entirely different knights, for example. The game goes from the end of Uther Pendragon's reign to the end of Arthur's. This is a span of eighty-some years. In Pendragon each session is one year, meaning that this is a campaign that will take serious investment. The goal of Pendragon is not to supplant Arthurian legend. It is to supplement it. There can only be one High King and one perfect knight. They are not going to be PCs. The first ten years are going to likely feel somewhat 'scripted'. This is normal. It's a chance for me to get to know the game, for you to get to know the game, for myself to understand your knights, and for your knights to start building up relationships with each other and NPCs. As the timeline follows Arthurian legend along some things may feel 'scripted' even after the first decade. It's a swaying balance. Sometimes PCs will be at the fore, driving matters along. Other times PCs will react/supplement what NPCs are doing. Female knights are a topic that'll be determined based on what a player wants to play. If there's a player that wants to be a female knight, I will modify the world such that female knights 'happen', but are rare and looked upon strangely. It will be a unique RP opportunity for that player, but not without its challenges. I would recommend even more than to other players that the female knight's player have a second PC ready to play should something happen to her. Pregnant knights can't exactly adventure. If no one wishes to be a female knight then women will have their traditional role of housekeepers and babymakers. Paganism is certainly allowed as per the rulebook. Note though that Pendragon is not a game of religious conflict. Knights will not be at arms against each other because one PC is a pagan in a group of British Christians. Sir Palomides was a Saracen, and very rarely did he find himself at religious odds. As GM I might introduce religious-based roadblocks occasionally, though. Female pagan knights though, if that happens, are going to have an astoundingly rough time of it. I'd prefer all players to have the Pendragon rulebook. I can find ways to get it to you/help you generate a character if you don't have it though. Sessions will preferably be weekly, with time to be determined based on general availability. I'm US Central time, for reference. All in-character things will be done through text. This is a game where people are going to play a variety of PCs doing a variety of things, and it makes it easier for me as a GM to see it all in text. If enough players have microphones and wish to use them for out of character banter during the game, I'm fine with that. Post here or PM me if interested. I also have a Skype that I would be willing to use to talk or help formulate ideas.
Although I have never played it, I'm definitely interested. Chances are I can get the rolebook in a reasonable timeframe. It sounds somewhat similar to Ars Magica, in that it has a simulated-history bases and an emphasis on "country management" as well as character activities - and Ars Magica is a favourite of mine. Let me give the game store a look, or Amazon etc, and keep me in the loop please. It sounds intriguing. PS. How about Germanic knights? I realize that they uphold somewhat different values, but several of the Romances were actually written by Germanic authors, so the concept was far from alien to them.
sounds...i want in but...i have no rule book and no money. this game sounds really cool, but without the book...i look into it but even if i can't play i wish you luck.
There's a splatbook dedicated to non-traditional knights but the campaign really, really does assume you're playing a British one from Salisbury. I don't have the other book, but I could get it easily enough I think and look through it if you're set on playing that and see if I could incorporate it somehow. The book's name is The Book of Knights and Ladies.
Oh, I'm not set on anything without knowing the rules and setting a bit better. I was just feeling out the water, so to speak. I'll admit that being a historian, it feels pretty limiting to have the choice of one city, and not one too big at that. Realistically, half the knights in the campaign would be related at that rate, and I think that's possibly a bad idea.
Honestly, while it feels like a big limitation to be a knight from Salisbury (which includes Sarum, Wilton, Warminster, Tilshead and a slew of manors), in play it's not much of a hamper at all. Also, part of the game is the dynastic and family element so if half of the knights are related that's more plot hooks and reasons to adventure each year. Being from Salisbury also helps you get a front seat to the action and generates the best/most interesting family history results; all of which is pretty integral to the Grand Pendragon Campaign.
I did pick up the Grand Pendragon Campaign book as a pdf at a store, but it doesn't seem to include actual rules to creature your knights or whatnot. Since I'm not sure what I'm looking for, I may be overlooking things, but it seems this is more of a campaign book and it requires a different volume as well.
Yeah, you want the King Arthur Pendragon core book for generating characters: here it is at RPGNow.com . There's a number of different editions available, but 5.1 is the most recent. You'll of course want to check with Dylan as to which version he's running.
5.1 is indeed the edition that we're using, sorry I didn't make that clear earlier. The campaign book is, ah, more for GMs than anything. Reading through that entirely might spoil a lot of the fun/surprise of the game.
I read in a review that the core rulebook PDF is essentially a luxury scan, without a table of content or index. That's ... not good, and makes US$20 pretty lousy value for a game I'd buy at a gamble. Odd, though - the campaign book pdf had a nice index and everything.
I'm interested too. Very happy to play a Salisbury Knight. I've picked up various older versions of the rules over the years but not the most recent yet. I've only played a couple of sessions six years ago as it didn't appeal to the rest of the group as much. I live in England and would probably be able to play if it was every two weeks and we could find compatible times.
Yeah, the core book for 5.1 is an.. 'Eh' pdf in terms of bookmarking and stuff. No clickable index and only the table of contents are hyperlinked. If you don't want to take that gamble, I'm fine with that. Thanks for at least expressing interest and such. And Mick, that's a definite 'maybe'. I'd likely be able to accommodate weird playing times, but if others want in on this it might be more difficult to coordinate. We'll see. This is an interest-gauge at the moment. I'd like at least three people before I go forward with 'We will play at X'.
Ran a campaign for years. Would be very interested in play. I have all the books of all versions. Sounds fun if done with a group of people who know the culture and lore of Pendragon.
This seems like a very interesting concept. I work nights at a casino, so basically every day from 4pm-8pm EASTERN I can play. Tuesday and Wednesdays are my days off, so whenever on those. I'll try to download the pdf and see if I can get a character going today before I go to work.
