"I’m sixteen, and near as I can figure all my friends and I
do is worry. What are we gonna be when we grow up, who’s gonna ask us to
prom, how the hell do you fit in when you don’t look like anybody else
in the whole world. We’ve got a lot to worry about."
Carrie Vaughn - “The Thing about Growing Up in Jokertown” This game is designed to run for 4 - 6 sessions (with the possibility of continuing) on Saturdays from 12:00pm EST.
The wild card virus, also known as Xenovirus Takis-A, is an
artificially-created organism developed by the Takisian aliens to
enhance their own psionic powers. The aliens decided to field-test it on
Earth. It was released over New York City in 1946, and changed the
course of human history forever. The virus is extremely deadly, killing
90% of the infected. The remaining 10% are transformed in spectacular
ways. Most become jokers, hideously deformed monsters. A few lucky
survivors become aces, superhumans gifted with amazing powers.
70 Years after the release of the virus, you are a teenager
starting high school at Cascades High School in New York City, better
known as Jokertown High. You're just discovering who you are and what
you're capable of, where you fit in, and who you can trust. The road
ahead is uncertain and full of peril, but Joker or Ace, you're already
ahead of the 90 percent of Wild Carders that drew the Black Queen, so
you've at least got that much of a start. All you have to do now is
figure out where your life goes from here. Wild Cards: Spite and Malice is an experimental campaign designed to focus on storytelling and roleplaying over game mechanics. There are several differences between this and a normal M and M game. -
The game is designed to run for 4 - 6 sessions at first, long enough to run through one storyline and see if people enjoy it. I'm certainly open to continuing past the first storyline if people are enjoying themselves. - Characters are created randomly and some elements are created by the
GM. You have NO control over the specific powers, physical form if you
draw a joker, etc. of your character. This is fundamental to this
setting: You play the hand you're dealt. If this isn't for you, that's
understandable, most people are looking to live out their fantasies of
choice through RPGs. Nothing wrong with that, I play in and GM several
games like that myself. This isn't that type of game. - Mechanics
are hidden. We will use battle maps for setting the scene and to make
visualization easier, but all dice will rolled by the GM other than at
character creation. No game mechanics will be referred to during play.
Everything will be described by the player and GM in RP terms. The
Mutants and Masterminds system will be used behind the scenes for
determining combat and skill checks, so you will need to understand how
combat works in the system, at least the basics. I can teach you the
basics if you don't know them. This also means you won't see the numbers for your character, but will have your attributes described generally in RP terms. -
There is no XP. Progress is determined by story goals. If the storyline
indicates that a skill is improved or gained, it will simply be added
to your character as needed. - Discord will be used for voice chat. Players will be in character at all times during the game. -
There is a 90 percent chance that your character will have random
horrible physical deformities. Again, this is the nature of the setting.
It's understandable that this is not for everyone. I'd prefer not to
have people drop out if thy don't like their character, so please don't
join just hoping that you get lucky and roll an Ace or if you can't
handle playing a character that could potentially look like this , this or even this . - Players will be RPing teenagers. This isn't for everyone, so sometimes
people try to get around it by being 1000 year old demons that look
like teens in teen supers games. That isn't possible in this setting. If
you aren't down with RPing a teenager, this isn't for you. All
characters also will live within the geographical boundaries for
attending Jokertown High School, which is roughly where the Bowery
district exists in Manhattan in the real world. - So, given all
of that, what can you decide about your character? Well, everything not
related to the Wild Card. Name, race, gender, birthday (Characters are just beginning the 9th grade, so in US schools that puts them at age 14 or 15 on average, with outliers at 13 or 16),
their parents wild card status (the virus is a recessive genetic trait) ,
socioeconomic status (The school you go to is populated mostly by the very poor, so keep that in mind. Just being above the poverty line would make you one of the richest kids in school), when their wild card was expressed (at
birth or did you get exposed to a spore cached two weeks ago?) your
general personality, your skills, interests and hobbies. Of course you
also get to decide the most important thing of all: How you respond to
your situation. Obviously, reading the above, you've either got
to be a hardcore fan of the Wild Cards universe or a hardcore roleplayer
or both. Only the hardcore roleplayer part is absolutely necessary, as
the world information can be supplied by the GM both in and out of
character. You don't even really have to know the Mutants and
Masterminds system as I can teach you what you need to know in order to
RP combats. If all of this sounds good to you, please proceed to the LFG Posting and apply. https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/99167/wild-card...
