New to Roll20, How does this exactly work?

Hey everyone. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum but it seemed to be the closest to what I'm inquiring about. So my friend and I came across roll20 when we were trying to figure out if there was a way to play D&D without one of us being the DM because finding a 3rd person was pretty difficult and he was brand new and I just didn't want to do it. Roll20 looks very promising, however, I have a few questions if you all don't mind. How does roll20 exactly work? Do I need the app? How do we create a character? Do we do it ourselves with pen/paper or is there a link where we can generate one? How does the voice/video work when joining a game? Does the DM provide the links for all that? Thank you all in advance for your responses.

Roll20 won't DM for you though. it's a virtual table top, not a videogame.
Search Roll20 on You Tube , filter through a couple to find a narrator who speaks in a way you can relate to and watch his or her tutorials, you might also glance at a few actual plays. You will get frustrated and annoyed and wonder if early onset Alzheimers is starting to take your brain. When this happens go to the forums and ask questions, lots of questions, but specific questions. People on the forums fight over who can be more helpful. This is mostly smoke and mirrors, but you can do some amazing things when you get the smoke and mirrors right.

There are such a thing as "GM-less games" or DM-less games, not needing a game master.  For an obvious example: Chess or Checkers. But there are also Roleplaying Games with fantasy-vibes like D&D but more able to be played together with 2 players, no GM. You might want to look into that genre to find something to play. However also, my personal advice is, one of you 2 should try DM'ing! Every DM got their start somewhere, and didn't know how, and jumped in.

Just in case what you mean is you are looking for someone to GM, there is a game finder forum and Looking for Game function. Be warned though that the ratio of players to GMs is very high, and it might be difficult to find a GM quickly.
The sarcasm is strong in this forum. I've been playing D&D for 20 years so i know exactly what i asked. I think certain people just read it wrong. Let me clarify. My buddy and I are looking for a DM because it is hard to find a 3rd person let alone a DM where we live and that will work around our schedule. I have DMed before and I didn't like it and I wasn't too good at it. I browsed around the "join game" area and that is where my questions stem from.  The tutorial seems to only show the virtual tabletop from the GM point of view unless I'm missing something. So, with that said, when I join a game, do I roll a character then or do I do it on my own and just reference it whenever it is needed?  Do I just click to join or do I have to download something in order to join a game? Is the voice/video connected to the virtual table top? Thank you.

No sarcasm meant. People here are very (sometimes over-, but genuinely) helpful. As I understand it, in most cases, you would look for a game and apply to it, then build your character with guidance from the DM. Every game can be different, though. This isn't like League play, where you have a sanctioned character that can be used interchangeably. You would want to build something to fit. If you apply for and are accepted into a game, that's when you should build your character. Since any given game can use a different character sheet than another, even if using the same system, trying to do the character first can lead to a lot of wasted time. That being said, every game is different. I'd look at the  Looking For Group feature and see what any interesting game is asking for. To play, you need only be registered on the site. Once you have the specs from the GM, including the character sheet used, you can either build your character on your own by creating a dummy game that uses that sheet, or build it while logged into that game. If you go the first route, you can use the Character Vault in most cases to bring your character in. I believe one of you (player or GM) has to have at least a Plus membership for Vault usage.  There is voice/video, but it is pretty sketchy at the moment. Many groups use an outside app like Skype or Discord. Some groups use voice only, others text only. Every group is different, but the LFG should give you some idea of what to expect.
Thank you keith, much appreciated.

Jon H. said: The sarcasm is strong in this forum. I've been playing D&D for 20 years so i know exactly what i asked. I think certain people just read it wrong. Really sorry if my post sounded like sarcasm, it was absolutely not intentional. Some people end up on this forum asking really basic (but totally legit) questions about RPGs and Roll20 (mostly about D&D in fact), and I didn't catch that you were an experienced player.
