[LFP] Custom System/Fantasy Setting - Sessions are bi-weekly saturdays @ 10AM EST. (5 stable players + GM looking for 1-2 more)

1515110017

Edited 1515905141
Greetings fellow players, A pre-emptive sorry for wall of text! (please read carefully however as the devil is in the details!) What is it? Classic Fantasy RPG, No gunpowder however. Grim dark setting. When is it? Saturday the 20th of January anno 2018 at 10:00 AM EST and twice a month going forward, Saturdays from morning to late afternoon EST. We normally play for 2 hours, then have 1 hour break for food/family then we play again for 5 hours+ which normally leaves every session Saturday free for people to minimize RL interference (If you live in North America at any rate) Is it free, or do I have to pay? No pay to play, it is 100% free of charge and always will be. Text, Voice or CAM? Voice Only (Discord), Push-to-talk, no mouth-breathers :) - CAM can be optional if people so desire down the road. Language or geographical restrictions? English language mandatory, but nationality/location can be anywhere as long as you can comfortably attend session times. Who/what kind of players are you looking for? Adults 21+ Years or older, sorry youngsters! we are also looking for people who are looking for possible long term commitment to a campaign and good internet companionship. We are looking for people with a positive disposition, an open mind and who leave the "attitude" at the door. What do we offer in turn? A very informal and relaxed group but with focus on a serious and committed RPG experience for adults and a place for mutual respect and willingness to help. We do not really believe in such a thing as too many questions or "stupid" questions. - last but not least hopefully an immersive RPG experience and a lot of good times! Will I be joining an ongoing Campaign or a brand new one? While you will be joining an existing group, the campaign is brand new, so you get to be here from the beginning, that is of course if we fill our spot before the 20th when it goes live. Is the setting well developed? or is it some "mish-mash" on a whim kinda thing? and how big is it? It has been developed (and still is) for over 20+ years, as to the question of "mish-mash" that I think is for you to decide yourself, and it is titanic in size. Approximately 4 times contemporary earth and with cosmic planes as well. The important bits: People who are reserved, or do not truly want this need not apply. We have not the time to enter a tug-of-war with people resistant to the concept or people with glass-is-always-half-full dispositions. People who are easily offended, has too much of a "chip on their shoulders" or need to always be right, or who argues everything need not apply at all, the same goes for "flighty" people or people who does not understand the art of commitment. How do I get in/first contact? #1 - First reply to this thread, let us know what you think of all of this. #2 - PM me here on Roll20 with time availability that suits you best during the next week or so going forward for where we will conduct an informal interview where we will be talking about us, what the campaign and system is like, the vision and hopefully answer all questions you might feel the need to probe us with. Should take no longer than 30 mins or so. #3 - For immediate questions, curiosity or any other informal affairs feel free to grab me on on Discord at: Hammer#0917 (remember it is CAPS sensitive) This takes care of the immediate tl;dr version. Below you will find more detailed information, and please do not worry about the formality of it all we just like to be thorough but we are pretty laid back, we just want to ensure continuous harmony in the group. So on to the main events! We are looking for a few people to fill our team. We are currently 5 players + 1 GM (all stable), we aim to have 6-7 players + GM. It is on first come, first serve basis (who passes interviews). Please do not be alarmed about the group size, we are very aware of "stage time" requirements for players who seek the full attention experience. We are looking for committed long-term players, potentially "forever" players but less will do :) If you would like to hear what people who have played (or are still playing) with us have to say feel free to take a look at the replies to our previous listings here: Testimonials are in the replies to the posting below: #1 - Last Posting: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/3874643/lfp-cust... #2 - Even older posting: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/3355397/lfp-cust... #3 - Aaaand another one: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/2989851/lfp-cust... Games will be conducted on Roll20 although we use "theatre of the mind" quite a bit. You will be playing in a grim setting during the Age of Apostasy where the gods have fallen silent and the world is in turmoil. Conflict rages everywhere, and the group will be playing heroes, not villains (at least when it begins * grins *) You will find more thematic descriptions in the links below and you are of course more than welcome to ask either in this thread, by PM or join our Discord if you want to probe all of this with questions before you make a choice to dip your toes. Campaign will have both personal and epic story arcs but will not be limited by action or time meaning this setting can take you on a ride for as long in RL time as you wish. So what should you expect from this babble? We usually meet and then sessions last 8+ hours (breaks included). The good news however is that this should still leave you the Saturday evening free, so while the sessions are long they should not have too much of an impact on your other activities during "prime time". That said, we set the time for the next game at the end of each session so there is some (not much) flexibility, it is difficult to manage otherwise with so many people and their schedules. We are looking for RP oriented players, not min-maxers or fantasy professors. Our focus is simply being part of an immersive, engaging and dynamic story free of the limitations of most systems. This requires dedication to the essence of Roleplay itself. That said, the system has a lot of depth but never at the expense of a player’s freedom. There will be no "railroading", no "deus ex machina", no forced choices and the setting offers total freedom to go anywhere in the world whenever you feel so inclined. Please note that this is not an invite for a casual session or two. This system (not just mechanics) is incredibly complex and requires a high degree of dedication and grit from all its players, beginner or veteran alike. It is also completely home-brewed and private so you can’t just google your inquiries. While the learning curve is tremendous, the investment in time and effort is rewarded beyond measure. If you are willing to put the work in, you’ll find the setting has depth beyond anything you’ve ever experienced. So, if you want instant satisfaction, total access and so on, look elsewhere. If you want a long-term, completely immersive gaming experience then this is where you’ll find it. Despite the above-mentioned complexity level, fear not. This game does not require a PhD in Math, nor is it our intent to convey it as such. It is not overly "crunchy" it simply refers to the scale, scope and depth and the fact it is a new system to learn. It is in short not just a "Sunday stroll in the sun" so to speak, it requires fortitude and grit to absorb in its entirety. People looking for a "quickie" wont find satisfaction here. This setting tries to strike a balance between mechanics and storytelling, it does not believe in a binary approach where one is excluded above the other, here we believe both goes hand in hand for the best experience. If you pass the interview we give you a 3 month trial, during this time we can better assess if you are a fit or not. Mostly this stage is largely irrelevant, and most if not all of the time this is but a footnote of practicality. Phew, all out of breath! So what is all this Jazz you ask? Well let me tell ya! The setting is Classic High-Fantasy, completely developed by the GM (of 20+ years). We host our own RP session blog found here: Our RPG Blog Site where the GM (me) also chronicles a novel-esque story about the adventurers in our group (on hold for full team formation before start), forming a continuous dynamic and entirely player-driven fictional story as well as hosting handouts, maps and other tidbits for the players (please note the site is still not being run actively just yet, atm it is just a placeholder with a few items on it, we will be activating the site once this campaign will go live). To give you a taste, it draws inspiration from Forgotten Realms, Warhammer Fantasy, Dragonlance and Lord of the Rings among many other sources. An ultra-compressed introduction of the system concept can be found here: Compressed Setting Concept Introduction Here are a few pictures if you wish to see some examples of the level of fidelity and detail that goes into the system (a picture of the current map the adventurers traverse as well as a few screenshots of parts of the character sheet): Bits (not all) of a Character Sheet (old version, new sheet has just been completed, yay!). Previous whereabouts of the adventurers (map): Previous Area Local Map of the Adventurers (click the picture once, then when enlarged click it again for full resolution). This was before we colored them! Current player handout for the God of Judgement: God of Judgement Player Handout (as an example). This is where it gets tricky I’m afraid, our requirements are quite specific and will probably only appeal to an ever smaller audience frequenting these boards but we prefer the right people (for our vision) over quantity. So if this recruitment post ends up being around for a while, then that is what it will be. So let’s get all the disclaimers out of the way first before we get to the good stuff: (this is just to make sure people do not waste our or their own time) You must pass an interview so we are sure that the interests and wishes of the existing players are met, as well as to ensure a meeting of the mind for the scope and direction this campaign is going for. We reserve the right to deny all applicants (politely) for whatever reason or no reason at all if we so choose. You must be 21+ (violence, very graphic, sexual content etc. may appear) sorry youngsters! All genders welcome. You must have Discord and a clear voice on the mike (sorry, no terrible voice qualities allowed). Push-to-talk only. You must observe and practice the art of commitment (if you like what you see and pass the interview). We have no interest or tolerance for people who do not attend the sessions we all agree to have. We do not demand anything but fair treatment. If you cannot make it to a session, it will be expected of you to inform us in reasonable advance. Real life racism, sexism, or any other discriminatory behavior is unwelcome and will get you removed (in-game is a different matter, setting is harsh and not for people looking for “political correctness”). Most of the materials released to the players require the use of Adobe Reader. Must have a Roll20 Account or make one (free). You must have a basic understanding of RPG games but no veterancy is required. Then a few practical notes: Disclaimer #1: http://ascendancy.dk/important-notification-about-... Disclaimer #2: http://ascendancy.dk/a-disclaimer-about-my-system/ Please do not bother applying if you have not read the entirety of this post as well as the materials in the links posted, yes it is quite the read but an important one for us to convey to any would-be-applicants, I am sure once you read them you would agree. besides If we get a bunch of questions that have already been answered here then then that tells us a few things about you already ;) If you read all this and the important links that go with it, you deserve applause and the team and myself will look forward to hearing from you in earnest! -assuming we peaked your interest ;) Thank you for taking the time to read all of this and hope to see you around soon! You can find our listing here: https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/44873/ascendanc... May it become my privilege and honor to serve you in our adventures. Cheers The Ascendancy RP team.
As a (very) long time member of this team, and reading the above... makes me fall in love with the system all over again. It's funny how you end up taking the endless possibilities.. both with your character's development and within the world for granted, and you kinda forget that nothing else (I've played or heard off) grants actual free will, you can go anywhere, do anything at any time.. yes your actions will have consequences, but those consequences has in the past let to some of the most heart pounding storylines and encounters. Imagine a world where your decisions matter, not just to you.. not just to your team, but to the peasant you helped, the city guard, the Innkeeper, they will all remember you.. and what you did for them. So get ready to matter. /Laz
As new member of the team, I don't fully grasp the scope and sheer size of this RP but it keeps me coming back every time to find out more. With only a few sessions under my belt I can easily say this is (personally) the best everything about an engaging RP. I hope to explore this world for years to come. Jack M.
I've been playing for a few years now and I'd like to give a quick summary below: Imagine a massive world that is both physically bigger and infinitely more diverse than our own. Picture the fidelity and immersive detail of an AAA video game (like the Witcher 3), but strip away all the limitations and invisible walls inherent in video gaming. Develop a character that will feel like the best friend you never had (or the enemy you always dreaded) and feel the adrenaline pumping through your veins when that character's life is on the line. Experience teamwork and camaraderie in a way that builds friendships for life. I can honestly say that this system will make you question if anything else is worth playing. The GM has the experience and ungodly ability to immerse you in an engaging story that is nothing like your typical hack and slash adventure. Deep philosophical questions of morality, the responsibility of choice, the truth behind heroism (or villainy) are all explored here in a way that is not only extremely entertaining, but also quite enlightening. If you've got the grit and perseverance to make the cut then I'd be honored to experience this adventure alongside you.
My whole life I have always dreamed of being part of a fantastic RP group where I could lose myself within the story and the world; however, I have always lacked the company with such a specific interest that instead I had to fill that insatiable void with fantasy video games and books. As great as I thought they were - they would always leave me unfulfilled. I wanted to be a part of something that had the potential of being greater than myself. A world where the culmination of your actions shape something that is living and breathing and will continue to thrive with your intervention or without. An experience where you are not just a passenger with a story unfolding before you and all you can do is peer through a tiny window...and tap on the glass with bated breath trying to drink in the beauty outside but the warmth emanating from the glass is all you will ever feel. A universe that feels so real that it bends you to its will and you must abide by its laws, sciences, and logic or perish and your remains will forever be a testament to the harshness of the world. And lastly, a cosmos inhabited with such rich lore that no matter where you metaphorically dig there is no end in the grand scope of it all. What I just described above...is Ascendancy. Every time I step into the world of Ascendancy I don't feel like I'm on another short lived roller coaster ride - I feel like I truly am stepping into another realm and I can barely wait for the next session.
We have gotten quite a few PM's so just a heads up we will be closing this posting on Friday the 19th and will conduct all interviews between now and then, thank you all for the interest and effort!
Whomever it was we had an interview with last night, a bit at random, we hope you read this message since we met you on Discord we do not actually have your contact details, please forward them to me here on PM, cheers!
This seems like a really great idea and well planned and thought out. To me this is what makes a great campaign and something i would be willing to spend a lot of time on. Without playing in it i can already tell you put a lot of work into this and that alone means i will have a great time! I'm very interested and hopeful in learning this new system and all of it's intricacies.
Recruitment closed. Thank you all for your applications!
Sorry I missed this, it looks really interesting. Have fun all!
