I loved using Photoshop to create custom maps for my own campaigns offline when I used to GM. Back in the day, my players seriously balked when I announced that I would be replacing the battle map with a laptop, but they were quickly won over when I gave them a better visual representation of what I could not provide the traditional way. Since then, we've integrated computers, tablets and smart phones into our games and haven't looked back. I'm hoping to push them into the next phase by getting them to adopt Roll20 before members of our group are forced to move away, permanently disbanding the group. Again, I'm facing some resistance... Anyway... the dimensions, resolution and scale of my laptop-run, face-to-face adventures were only were limited to the specs of the machine I was running PS on (and I pushed it to the extreme), but the members of my group will use a wide variety of machines to play and I want to make sure that there are no problems for the lower-end users. At the same time, I am not the primary GM of the group - two different people take that role, with others stepping forward occasionally to run; so I want to help them (without spoiling adventures for myself) by making map tiles they can use to expedite their adventures. I see in the Virtual Market that there are people creating and selling map tiles (and tokens), but there's little indication of their dimensions and resolution. I've read the site's documentation and scoured the forums for info, but the answers have escaped me. I know for certain that the best format for items without an alpha channel is JPG, but aside from that, I am worried that I am going to go too big and make something that will cause problems that will interfere with play and ultimately undo my efforts to get my group to use Roll20. Rather than try and fail over and over, I figure it is better and more efficient to ask members of the community who create and/or use map tiles in their games about what they're doing and the results. What is the "sweet spot" concerning size/resolution/scale of these files? What is "too big" and what is "too small"? - X
