New player needing help getting started!

Hi folks! I am a noob when it comes to table top RPG's and don't have any friends that play. I found Roll20 and am excited to get into playing. I've looked through the Wiki but I am still confused on how to: 1) create a character 2) join a game 3) what all I need to get started If anyone has the time/patience to help I would appreciate it! Looking to play D&D or a game like it.
Simple rundown: 1) Character creation depends on the game; you (generally) don't make one and bring it with you, you make one for the game you're in. 2) Watch LFG (this forum) and apply to a lot; there are MANY more players than GMs so be prepared to try a few times. 3) That's about it. The GM of the game you're getting into will tell you what (if any) materials you need.
So #1 will depend on the game you join, if you have the chance read up on the systems you are trying to play as that is the best way to learn. #2 There is the join a game link under games, search the systems you are interested in and see if anyone has a game that you like, then apply. #3 you have already gotten started now you need to do some reading and go looking for a game. Hope this helps feel free to PM me if you have more questions that the rest have not answered. Russ
Thank you! I appreciate the help!

BTW, pathfinder is largely opensource and available free online.
