New and Looking For Help

Hello, most people call me Haunter. I am fairly new to Roll20, but it seems to provide a service that will be of us to me soon. In the next few months I will be leaving my home town and moving, but I wanted a way to keep playing those pen and paper games with my friends. This will help greatly, but I could use any tips, being so new. I watched the current (and some other/older videos) on how Roll20 works, but I'm new to the community, and I don't know how things work. TLDR version:- 1- Does using a system other than what is available on this site (for example I'm using the Mythic GM Emulator) effect anything or mean that I have ot keep my games private? Will it detract people from joining, because it's not as popular as the others? Am I able to share information about it (Like needing to get a 50 or higher on a roll)? 2-The project I'm working on for non-local-friends is Giant Robots. From Super Robots with sentience to Real Robots requiring top notch parts and piloting. I didn't see very many topics on this, but I'd love to get a group going, but the question is, is this a topic that no one will be interested in? I'm commited and have finished half of all the classes as far as drawing a colored picture (using macromedia flash, exported as a jpeg :P, on a old laptop that has a tablet pen for drawing) and I plan on doing the other half as well. I'm not a huge fan of all the animes or anything, but the idea of controlling/being part of controlling a gigantic robot is a great fun idea, am I alone (here)? 3- As far as Macro/abilities ect go, is there a way to automatically reduce one stat? IE Using 'Fireball' and taking out 20 mana? Long/Explained Version: 1-I'm using the 'Mythic' system, mainly the GM Emulator. It has a fate chart of numbers and scaling difficulties (IE How well your knife handling skills are VS how well the enemy can dodge) and so I am using a reversed process of it instead (because it works better with the macros, as the fat chart uses high numbers=bad and low=good). The Mythic system (not really being a rule set ) wasn't listed, is that really an issue? The style of how I'm adapting it (it recommends adapting it to your own needs) and the macros in the Roll20 system replace the need to look up the chart, but is this still an issue here? (Sorry if it's hard to understand!) 2-While I will end up playing Fantasy type games with my local friends, I have been working on a Giant Robot category. I did a search and noticed some mechwarrior/robotech, but what I am doing is homage to a lot of famous robots. Names are not similar and the looks aren't either, though the premise is the same. Examples: There are Super Robots and Real Robots (basing this off of Tropes), 5 classes (of giant robot) in each. The creation of the Pilot and the Mechanoid, like any good pen and paper, is up to the maker of the character, but with certain guidelines. I have a combining robot, how many units is up to the creator. It could be anything from super sentai to getter robo homage, and I have drawn all of the super robots out (and plan on putting them as tokens) None of the pictures look like any famous SR/RR/Giant Robots. Does any of this break some rules of Roll20? While searching for Giant Robot I saw someone talking about Fair Rights. I don't plan on making money, and I just wanted to start a group up for people who were interested. Also, is this a bad topic? Are very few people going to be interested? The scenarios I'm looking at involve going from pilot to robot, and not using the fog of war, since 'the news is displaying this horrible monster attacking japan' would alert you to where the giant monster/robot/alien (ect) is, not that finding a giant being should be hard. Because of some oversights on what a normal pen and paper might go for (like crawling through dungeons, exploring ancient cities, ect) the Pilot (or group, if using a robot who needs more than one, which the player would act as the leader) would try and limit the destruction of the city, while maximizing the speed of getting to the enemy (Launching the robot from under water, shooting it down from space, having it eject from a even larger carrier, controlling the robot from far away with your toy remote control, ect) 3-(Probably best put into another forum page) As far as Macro/abilities ect go, is there a way to automatically reduce one stat? IE Using 'Fireball' and taking out 20 mana?

1- You can play anything you want. What games are listed is not a list of supported games. It is a list of popular games that people are trying to find each other to play. 2- Again, you can set up and play anything you want. :) 3- Currently, macros/abilities cannot reduce attributes. However, the API (a Mentor level feature) should be able to do this. You can ask the API forum.

Pen and Paper usually isn't about Super Robots and Real Robots, which is a small category of science fiction, and I'm seeing if there is interest or not in the genre itself

You may want to split that question off into it's own thread then. I suggest posting it in the Off-topic section.
mythic is a pretty rare system. but those that like it like it, I have it but I'm running one ring RPG for LotR. I like mythic. you might recruit with a base idea of what kind of campaign explain the basics in a few paragraphs, and advertise it. you won't get a slot on LFG for Mythic until many players are playing you. You can apply and ask but that list of popular systems is simply that popular, soo you see 4e, and 3.5 but not One Ring, and many ,many others. It will take some work to get it launched but give it a few weeks to months and you'll get players, there are so manypeople joining, now about 3 a day, every day that you can probably find some people IF: You are cool, and treat people nice. you seem like you know what you are doing you launch games on times you say you will and work with players to teach the you run good games you are PATIENT and not every 6 hours bumping topics for your recruiting threads. Set up a campaign, make a LFG post in other games (since yours is not on the approved popular list) work on the game as much as you can, and people will come. Have confidence, and don't come off as desperate. Like: "I'm a GM of a system that hasn't gotten the oplay it deserves, called Mythic." It's a storytelling system with a basic yes / no deterministic mechanic (give an example) Character sheets are X. Ther campaign will feature X and Y, in the year, Blahblahblah with these cool things. Let them know if it's text only or text plus skype or google hangouts or whatever . Etc give a way to contact you in the thread by PM or whatever. Let them know where they can get a sample book if those mythic pepole have a intro to mythic download, sample sheet, etce etc. Good luck. I'd like to see this get started, because Mythic does have a potential here. -TK

Pen and Paper usually isn't about Super Robots and Real Robots, which is a small category of science fiction, and I'm seeing if there is interest or not in the genre itself I've seen LFG posts for games that skewed to both Super Robot and Real Robot genres, although the ruleset was either Mekton Zeta or BESM. So, there are people here who are interested and would like to play either or both.
Thanks for all the replies, very helpful! I thought about separating the threads, but I wasn't actually looking for a group /yet/, and I didn't want to invest tons of time into a fantasy dominant place, or rather, a fantasy monopoly, so to speak :P I've done some GMing in the past, but I'm not that great at it, and so I might be outclassed. However I've got plenty of time to set up things like story, art, enemies and what not. Dedication VS Skill, I believe. I'm not sure /how/ much of a problem that is, since the Mythic system uses bits of logic to decide the outcome / skill ranks, and the fact I'm open to change. I've had a lot of experience on making different board games, and I spend my free time writing collections of stories. I will take Trollkin's advice and explain what I'm trying to do on the (off topic?) forum. I am confused about the topic forum sections. What is API? Is Off-Topic things that are totally not related to Roll20/tabletop/pen and paper? I'd like to post about what kind of game I want to run, but also get tips because I'm new at this. Where is the best place for me to post campaign ideas? I only have the Mythic system, and it's fairly simple to pick up, so I'm using 'what I got' for now. I'm new here, so it's a learning process, and again thank you for all the replies! :)

The API forum is the forum devoted to java scripting custom scripts in Roll20 using the API (a Mentor level feature). On-Topic is for discussions directly related to Roll20. Specific Questions is similar to On-Topic and is for questions relating to how to use Roll20. Off-Topic is for discussions not covered elsewhere such as game systems to play, advice on how to play/GM etc. LFG is the forum to look for a game or group.

With a little perseverance, I have no doubt that you'll be able to find a good group for whatever system you want to run.
