[LFP] Ars Magica 5th, European timezone

Play Location/Method: Text only (Play by post for covenant management / research) Game/System: Ars Magica 5 th Edition Player or GM? GM Time/Frequency: Once per week, Monday 7 PM (CET), Central European time, when adventuring. When not adventuring, we'll resolve 1 season per week. Genre: European mythic middle age, focusing on magic and wizards (see http://www.redcap.org/page/Ars_Magica) Current needs: 6-7 Players. Short description of the setting/campaign: The saga will be either newly gauntleted magi creating a new covenant, or apprentices who will create a new covenant at the end of their training. I have several saga ideas, so the group will have to choose from: - Provençal saga : either in the Pyrenees mountains or in the Gévaudan, both area being safe from the Albigensian crusade. Focus on local folklore. - Normandy / Provençal saga : the Massif Central mountains are a gray area between the Normandy and the Provençal tribunals, with plenty of magic sites and roman ruins. - Normandy faerie saga : set in Brittany, with a focus on faeries, and Arthurian tales. - Seeker saga : probably set in the Provençal tribunal, on the Provence islands, but could be either Roman or Theban tribunals. Travel and exploration, through the Mediterranean sea and beyond.
I'm possibly interested, although it would need to be somewhere Monday-Thursday for me to work out, time-wise. I'm quite familiar with both setting and system (going back to 3rd edition), as well as actual history and mythology of the time period (since I'm an anthropologist / librarian). Since you are planning on a text-only game, there's a risk that adventuring will be quite abbreviated, since typing an adventure tends to be on the slow side. Games that devolve into endless research lose a lot of their luster, in my opinion, since there's very little interaction with the world. How do you plan to tackle that?
Hello, I want to avoid Tuesday - Thursday - Friday, but I'm open to any other days. This will need to be discussed with interested players. For the text-only, there's several points: First, adventures can and should be adapted to text-only. I can accelerate things a bit by modifying the game preparation from a voice game, and by avoiding too much time consuming events during adventures. Research season should not be number crunching only. Posts about the covenant life are important during the research seasons: while they may not have any effect game-wise, they can offer much needed interactions (especially social interactions) during research season, keeping involvement up. They can also be follow-up of old adventures, so there's a sense of continuity. If all magi are planning to research for a long time, full companions / grogs stories can also occur. Major point: I will need to be careful that research is never a default action. I don't expect problems at the start, because properly setting up the covenant will take some time. But I will need to take care that: During character creation, you provide enough reasons (via flaws, covenant hooks or just by your background) for your character to have something to do after the covenant is set up. I provide enough possibilities so that you always have to choose between researching and doing something else. If you decide you want to research, that's fine, but that should not be the only 'interesting' thing to do. As an example, for the Seeker saga, you should always have clues to go on a quest. Maybe you'll need to do a bit of research before you can follow-up with an adventure, but you'll have something to do. For the other sagas, your parens, faeries, magic creatures or ghosts can provide you with information, as can mystery cult / house leaders, ... There will be a long-term goal, either a major threat or a unique opportunity, which will appear through the game. Reaching this goal will be the end of the campaign. I will try to time this so that you first set up your covenant, then have a lot of different quests, related to the end goal or not, then when it threatens to become boring, the long-term goal will be clearly defined AND can be reached with a bit more work.
While your main character will be a magi, you will also have a dedicated non magi (companion) character. There will also be additional characters (like grogs) if neither your magi or your companion are available for an adventure (that's the standard Ars Magica Troupe play).
I am interested. I have been looking for a game for a while now. I'm new to Roll 20, but not Ars Magica. I'm in the US, but have a flexible schedule. Also way too much free time ;0)
With some effort, I could make a Monday game, but Chris' preferred 6pm CET start time would be the latest I could start. I would, however, definitely prefer a Wednesday game, starting either 7pm or 8pm GMT. The weekend is not an option for me, since I prefer to spend that with family.

I would be very interested if you can run the game on Mondays, 6 PM CET would be fine with me. Sunday I could do as well, but I'd have to miss sessions fairly frequently due to RL appointments, so I'd prefer the Monday slot. On Wednesdays I have another group, so I wouldn't be able to join there.
I too would be interested depending on the timeframe. I have played Ars before.
OK, the date seems to be the main problem for now ... If I'm right, we have: Monday- Thursday for Pat vdR (6 PM latest on Monday, Wednesday preferred) Monday or Saturday for Chris M., starting 6 PM or 7 PM No preferred date for Brian L. Monday would be fine for Harald S. (No Wednesdays and Sundays) No date specified for Patrick F. For me: 6 PM is too early. Currently, there won't be any problem, but I will soon change job, and 6 PM will not do. 7PM should be OK. Tuesday / Thursday may be available for me if that's easier. On Tuesday, I may be unavailable once every other month, on Thursday I can easily shift what I have planned another day if necessary => at the moment, it seems that we could have the most people on Monday, at 7 PM (4, maybe 5), but maybe Tuesdays / Thursdays could be better for you ?
Weekends are best for me, or any time that's late in the evening, but since I'm EST and you're therefore five hours ahead of me, I'm sure evening time for me is a bit late for you.
Thursday at 7pm GMT would work out fine for me - it is just as good as a Wednesday to me.
Chris M. said: We can do Thursday at 7 PM (11 AM for us) as well if the party needs that day! Wouldn't 7pm GMT be 2pm EST? Of course, it'd be 11am if you're PST and the "us" refers to the pair of you, rather than the general US contingent. :)

7pm GMT is 11am PST, noon PDT, 2pm EST, 3pm EDT
Sorry, for the hours, I was speaking in CET (GMT +1). So, that's 6 hours ahead of EST, and 9 of PST.

I can do Thursday's 7pm CET (1ish EST) ...dumb daylight savings time still has me messed up...
Tuesday and Thursday don't look good for me, either, I'm afraid. That might change for Thursday, but I can't make any promises in that regard.
Sadly, I don't think we can find a date where everyone interested would be available, so I'm going to choose one, and to set the date for the adventures on Monday, starting at 7 PM CET (I will provide hours in GMT for each specific games, it will be easier for everyone ... ). So, if I'm correct, we would have: - Chris + his wife - Brian - Harald Do you have any preference on the saga (amongst the four I listed in the original post) ? Do you rather start as newly gauntleted magi, or as apprentices (with a slightly quicker pace during apprenticeship) ?
I have a few character concepts that would do well in the various settings. I'm partial to the Theban Tribunal, though not really as written (the olympians as Faerie drives me bonkers). I've not done anything in Normandy so I'm open. I have a Werefox Tytalus named Reynard I keep trying to play ;0) Starting as Apprentices is new to me, seems like fun. For some magi it will benifit them more to progress those years season by season. Will definitly give a better idea of the character and have them progress organically, instead of having an end goal 30 year build in mind. I have some Criamon ideas that would fit a Seeker campaign too. I'm no help in being decisive that's for sure. lol.
Yeah, I could have made the original time, but Mondays I work. Thanks, anyways.
I'd prefer one of the first three campaigns, since the seeker campaign might distract somewhat from the focus on the covenant, which I feel is one of the more interesting and unique aspects of Ars Magica. My idea for a Bonisagus / Trianoma should work in either the Normandy or Provencal Tribunals, I think, though it might be thematically a little closer to the Provencal. Beginning as apprentices sounds like fun, I'll agree with Brian, though maybe a few years into the apprenticeship when they already have a little experience under their belt rather than right at the start?
For apprentices, what I think could be interesting would be: - especially at the start, resolving study / lab activities per year rather than per season (you'll be busy learning Latin, having your arts opened, ... That's not exactly the most interesting stuff) - maybe playing the arrival of your characters (or at least some of them) at your parens covenant (around 7-8 years old ?) - playing one story while you're still discovering the apprenticeship and the covenant (2-3 years into your apprenticeship ? ) - then playing a number of linked stories, starting when you're 5-6 years into your apprenticeship, until your gauntlet - finally, playing your gauntlet (which could be a group gauntlet if you were apprenticed around the same time)
Sounds a lot like Fate character generation. I think it gives a nice background and well rounded begining character. Developing Virtues and Flaws during play that first session... I like it.
Hi there, were you guys still on?
I'm also still interested.
Cool, I just hadn't heard anything:0)
Hello, I will create the game tomorrow morning, and I'll post the link here.
I have sent the link to all of you. I'm keeping this thread up, as we can have a few more players.
We still have openings for the game :)
2-3 slots I think
Hello, Brian L. notified me that you have an opening for a player? I am definitely interested! I am GMT+2 so anything after 6pm (7pm CET) is fine with me, any day. (I am a little rusty on roll20, been some years since I used it, I do know my AM though)
THat was quick lol
Bump, hai
