I just see the grid and shape of the room when I join as a player, but I can see the map features as DM and when I click CTRL+L to see what my PCs SHOULD see.

Yep, either that or the map is on the dynamic lighting layer.

The map appears to be on the Map and Background layer. Is there any chance that it might be on both the Map and Background layer and the Dynamic Lighting layer?
