Custom character sheet and non-5E spell lists

Salve! So, I know that there's some serious discussion on whether to allow or disallow custom compendiums for individual users.  While I can appreciate the arguments for both pro- and con-, I believe the lack of such really hinders my ability to run a non-5E game.  As a [DG]M, I should be able to import whichever spells I want and/or need with minimal fuss without having to retype each one if I need to put it multiple places.  But, that's another discussion. That said, is it possible to create a new custom character sheet and define spell lists, or is that also bound by the constrictions (or lack thereof) of the ruleset of the game you're playing under on r20? TIA

You can embed data in a character sheet in a bunch of ways. Porbably the best is to store spell data in a sheetworker, so that when players select a spell from a list it fills a bunch of fields with the relevant spell data. It's probably not a good idea to store full spell data though (descriptions, etc). Best to assume the players know the game, and just store the game mechanics-specific data you need for the spells to work within roll20. And I totally agree we should be able to set up custom compendiums, even if they need to be sandboxed to our own games.

With the appearance of purchasable WOTC content on r20 I don't think they'll be willing to enable custom compendiums as it just opens the door for piracy on a massive scale. If you are using the Shaped sheet, you can render a spell as text and stick it in a word document. Pasting the full text into the description of a new spell will be enough for the sheet to grab all the mechanics. Make different text documents for each player and they can copy paste the text, saving you all time.

Nolan touched on the subject of custom compendiums in various blog/videos and  there is an ongoing discussion/suggestion thread about custom compendiums . The Nolan posts are  here ,  here , and  here .

Matt said: With the appearance of purchasable WOTC content on r20 I don't think they'll be willing to enable custom compendiums as it just opens the door for piracy on a massive scale. Piracy already exists, and there's a very effective pirate module for 5e content already that I know the roll20 devs know about. Piracy will always exist - that's no reason to limit your loyal customers who are willing to pay for features. That's just stupid. That leads to the pirates getting a better user experience than tyhe non-pirates, and just encourages people to seek out piracy. But in any case, it's a moot point. Custom compendiums could be limited to individual campaigns, or like the character vault, limited to particular owners. What I want to see is some database feature where I can enter a compendium-like set of data for my campaigns, that only I can use. It's not that complicated.

I don't see how custom compendiums limited to be shared within one campaign would be different from what some other VTTs and D&D Beyond offer with licensed content shared among players in a single game. I am hopeful that Roll20 can reach the same point.

I'm not even talking about licensed content, I'm talking about a tool that allows me to create my own content and use it in my own game. I could use such a feature to fill it with stuff from gamebooks I own, but more important to me: I could fill it with stuff I have created for my own games. The compendium - if it was open for user customisation and limited to individual campaigns - would be a fantastic tool for gms, whether using licensed properties or making their own homebrews, or some combination of the two.
