I have been having trouble selecting and moving large shapes.  For example, I use a large green rectangle across the whole right side to indicate "bordered by forest".  Unfortunately, I can not seem to select it easily.  Any suggestions?

Are you trying to draw a selection box around the entire rectangle?  I believe you only need to bisect one of the lines of an object with your selection tool to select the object. See image; I'm only dragging a selection box through one side of the rectangle.  When I release, the rectangle will be selected.
