Mentor/Mentored system?

Hey, I'm an extremely new table top player, but I've watched a lot of pod casts and I'm extremely interested in playing. I'd love to get started in D&D but I have 0 knowledge of the game and how to start it. I've looked at character creation sheets and they just baffle me, is any one interested in taking a newbie under their wing? I'll call you Senpai, pay you in bad puns and be eternally grateful!

You know, not to hijack this thread or anything, but I feel there are alot of people like Cameron just wandering around the forums interested in the hobby with little or no experience looking for someone to help them. I feel like there should be a system to sort of encourage more experienced players to help out newer players learn the system, like...oh ...I don't know credit towards maybe getting a subscription? Anyway that's something I wanted to get off my chest, unfortunately Cameron I've moved on from most d20 systems to Savage World and d6, if you had wanted to play those I might have been inclined but d20 is okay so I hope you find someone willing to help soon.

Cameron , you best bet would be just to search for a group that welcomes new players and ask if they will accept you. There is a lot of campaigns groups out in the Looking for groups that welcome new players listing. The link goes to 8 pages of 3.5e, 4e, and Next campaigns that welcome new players.

Cameron, did you have a specific edition of D&D in mind or are you interested in RPGs in general? Are there particular genres you prefer such as fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk, etc.? There are tons of different game systems out there, and even D&D has different versions. If you narrow down what you're looking for, it could help you find people to assist you. There's also a number of GMs here on roll20 that sometimes run one shots for various game systems to introduce new players. You might consider browsing the Looking For Group listings and the Looking For Group forums for those kinds of games. Even if you just see one that sounds interesting to you, there's no harm in asking the GM if they're willing to teach a new player. The Looking For Group listings even includes a checkbox to help you narrow down to campaigns that welcome new players.

Well from what I've seen and heard of the most common forms off D&D are either 3.5 or 4. I think I don't care which is wrong but it's rather. I'm willing to try anything. I'd have to admit though I'm a bigger fan of Fantasy than Sci-Fi. (Wood Elves>Necrons). I've already started searching the L4G page but I feel a burden with my literal minimal knowledge, that's why I was hoping there would be some mentor system or like single player tutorial that could at least make me somewhat proficient. From what I've seen I've got Character Sheets for 4.e so that would be the one I'd be gunning for.

No problem. I used to run learning sessions and there are others that do also. Those are generally posted in the looking for group forum. For those that run the games that welcome new players, it is not a burden to help people that have no knowledge. I don't have any ogl (open game licence)(free rules) links for 4e system but there are there are some for 3.5e and pathfinder. This would let you read up on the systems while working on getting into a game.
