My approach to vetting new players focuses on their backstory and their ability to fill the shoes that they created. RP actually matters in our games, a solid performance that leads to a skill check can often get advantage. I often create complex skill challenges based on RP that open up the possibility of multiple outcomes in a scenario. We also run a number of minigames that are designed to help players get into character in a natural way. My open world is the launch pad for all of my campaigns. Obsidian Bay is in the Lands of Intrigue, on the shore of the Shining Sea. Named Obsidian for the Obsidian that washed up from submarine volcanoes, the discovery lead to weapon manufacturing and trade. These weapons were found in the hands of armies of the underdark. This shadow mars the history of a proud and well-armed city. Now, all the obsidian sources are depleted. The city has become a mecca for knowledge and learning while the royalty scheme for ways to maintain their influence. One thing is known to all the guards - There are NO goblins in Obsidian Bay. I'll send a PM. This is where my games begin, you are welcome to get started making a character sheet anytime. https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/116940/character-creation-workshop
