I'm looking for a consistent group of mature people to play weekly. I'm available weekdays after 6pm PDT and weekends anytime. 3-4 hour sessions (or more :)). I have a few years of D&D experience, first as a teen and then picked it up again a couple of years ago. I've played some 5e, 13th Age, Star Wars EoE, and Shadow of the Demon Lord. I like an even mix of combat, RP, exploration, etc and I'm pretty flexible in terms of class and role. I do try to avoid homebrew, at least until I know a bit about the other players and GM. I'm cool with new players as long as everyone's engaged. I'd be happy to join an existing group or start fresh. I'm more interested in finding the right people, than a specific game. That's about it. Please let me know if you have a spot you think I could fill. Thanks!
Hey Oserc! I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I'm a long-time DM that wants to be a player in a game for once. I'm also looking for a long-term and reliable game with other like-minded people. I'd definitely be interested in starting a potential group if we can find a DM

Hi, I have answered up in a few threads here and there, Trying to find a group of mature players. So far just the first day of posting. I also am looking for the right people. Although I am in a mood to run 5th edition again, after taking a break from it for nearly a year to do science fiction (Star Trek). I like to run low fantasy, gritty, more towards realism campaigns. Much prefer a game like One Ring, narrative style, where players buy in, over Hack & Slash D&D. But often times around here 5th edition is what people know. Much more common. I do not have anything prepared yet, just trying to find a group of players, really. see if we can match up some ideas and concepts and then meet in the middle. PS I do not charge. I know why people do. I am not one of those people. I love to prepare things late into the night, think up plots, design encounters, and do maps. I just ask that players get along and respect the work that goes into the campaign.
I've never been in a super low-fantasy style game but I'm perfectly happy to try it. I'd love to try to form a group Pardalis. I personally enjoy a story driven game with lots of character development if that somewhat aligns with what you enjoy running.

Hi, Austin. I would not say it is super low Fantasy, it is just not Neverwinter with people riding around on Drakeling mounts, meeting shapeshifted tigers. But resting takes a long time. XP by scenario milestones, more than combat. Characters who go into battle all the time and are not very very skilled get maimed or blinded or killed, eventually. What I like to do best is have the players kind of get an idea of what they want to do, and form a semi-cohesive group, perhaps with a theme, but definitely not random. We take their backstories and fit them into the world. If there is a monk with a monastery history, there needs to be that monastery. If the peasant hero's town burned down, we need a burned town, a refugee survival area, even if a woods, and a bad guy with minions. So, with 5e, I try and make it a sandbox, with as many player hooks as i can. The mystical guy that knows secrets man was not meant to know goes slowly insane as he tracks down his old mentors who have mostly been killed off by the overarching conspiracy... while the Assassin / Spy does jobs for the King's Spymaster. Player characters have relatives, maybe they get along, maybe they do not. But for example if a beloved brother's wife goes missing, your PC gets a letter, from a rider who was paid to burn out horses...come quick... Like that. I like rules sets that have a town you can build on... in between sessions. (One Ring, Aces & Eights) OR characters change and grow, or their values change from their adventures (Star Trek Adventures RPG). or Political games with war, spying, and long range Effects (Birthright, 2nd edition AD&D). Game of Thrones RPG is all about the House, and surviving political enemies while outnumbered and outgunned in a land of shiting allegiances and backstabbing. You both are experienced DMs, so you know what I am talking about. Just tossing out my preferences here for later people coming in.
I have a feeling a lot of people are in this boat and not finding what they want in the Join a Game postings. :) Hopefully this works better. I'm not sure I'm necessarily looking for low-fantasy, but I do like gritty story-driven games that are played realistically... if that makes sense. I'm not looking to play a half-dragon/half-genie death knight or anything like that... not that there's anything wrong with that. Just not my style. Pardalis, if you think that fits what you have in mind definitely shoot me a PM.
That sounds very much like what I would like to play. I've been running a game for 3 years that's very sandbox-based and where backstories make up a large portion of the world and it's the type of game I would personally really enjoy playing in. My players wanted a very high fantasy game though so I kind of had to tweak accordingly. I personally would prefer something a bit more "realistic" but still fantastical in elements. I've just been a GM for a few years and I feel like It's about time I play as a player for a game too.
Sounds like you're looking to create a fully living world. I like it

Yes. Also worth mentioning is I used to run mongoose Conan, but it was some years ago. I used to have every boxed set, every module and read conan novels and watched Schwarzenneggar films to prepare. I left that whole collection of books in America though, because as they years passed and 5e came in people did not play it. I have the Modiphius version of Conan, but am still learning it, so if we did something like that it would be pretty rough, but I love Conan / dark ages and the characters are just wonderful and compelling. I am up for giving that a good try also if that was something a group was down for.
Yes, I like an initially small scale, small scope sandbox world unless the majority of the player characters start as say, nobles or something. Then grow it. When I ran Neverwinter nights, i made my own detailed armor, uniforms lore etc, and ran that server for 3 years with 6 Co-DMs, writing scenarios for a 36 player server. I did that until NWN 2 came out (which I didn't buy into).
I personally like slowly building into some political intrigue towards lategame as a party becomes established in a world as well as just general interactions with others. I like a balance of combat and social interactions personally. As for game systems I know 5e front and back but I'd probably be down learning some new things. up to whoever we tangle up as a group
I'm about to head home from work so I'll get back on to continue the discussion when I'm home.
I'm down to try a new game system. I think I'd prefer to stay away from any settings that I know too well (GoT, Tolkein), but I'm not very familiar with the Conan universe so I'd be down to check that out. Sent you both PMs.

I added you to Discord. Pretty late here, I will get some rest. Let me dig out my Modiphius Conan books, and i will get back with you both much later, with a few campaign idea pitches. If that doesn't sit well, I can pitch something else. We might well end up with 5e, I am okay with that. Easiest to recruit for.

Again, this is not set in stone, just sharing my thoughts based on resources. Conan is not decided, just tossing it out into the ring. With that in mind, I have the following Conan (Modiphius) Modiphius Adventures in an Age Undreamed of [Corebook], Archetypes: "Archer, Barbarian, Mercenary, Noble Warrior, Nomad, Priest, Pirate, Scholar, Scoundrel, Shaman" Free RPG day 2017 Pit of Kutallu Adventure Module, Character sheets (above), Quickstart book (Above), Also, the Thief Book. Contains New Archetypes: "Assassin, Bloody Right Hand, Fence, Highwayman, Master Thief, Relic Hunter, Spy" Covering Guilds, and Thief Rep, and Heist Jobs, which would be mainly cities, (Zamora where every shadow is an assassin, rustic Brythunia, staunch Nemedia, to Shadizar the Wicked, where every street is redolent with depravity) So this would be the central plains east of Aquilonia and West of the Vilayet Sea. Stealthy, dangerous, both for adventures and angering the status quo / guilds. You make a mistake, and go in on someone's turf, and they figure out who did the job, and catch you, you get garrotted and hung up one night in the market as an example. If we want to do anything more than Basic Core Campaign Archetypes or Thieves Archetypes, I can buy those books from Drivethru in a few weeks.
Thanks Pardalis! I'll take a look.
I will continue to post stuff in this thread until we can find more. Maybe 1 or 2 moreplayers? I guess we're looking for more mature long-term campaign consistent role players wanting to play after 6 PDT.. or weekends. Low fantasy, new group. Mix of social RP, exploration, narrative style, and combat. A gritty, story-driven plot based on ongoing campaign events and specific character backstories. System seems like pointing towards the Modiphius Conan. Links to free quickstart above. New players to Conan welcome. I will put target focus now on setting this up.
I checked out Conan a bit and I think I'd prefer to stick to D&D 5e for right now. It seems like an interesting system, but it's probably easier to find people for D&D 5e and not everyone is looking to learn a new system. Apologies, if you've already started working on Conan. Everything else you said fits. Let me know if you still have interest.
No i have not started working on it, just reading. really taking a wait and see atitude. 5e is eaiser to recruit for also, so there is that. Agreed.
Yeah I feel like 5e will be easier to recruit for and it's a pretty simple system as for as D&D goes. It might just be easier to run it in 5e just so we can jump straight in and play without worrying about learning rules. we can just put limits on races and things based on how low-fantasy we decide we want the game to be. like cut out lizardfolk, tabaxi, etc. so it's more "civilized human" type races. Plus I could see using races stat-wise but just re-skinning them as other human variants (ex: Goliath stats for just a strong human who's spent their life as a logger, miner etc. rather than being an ACTUAL half-giant).
right, that is generally how I go. Either core books, or maybe sword coast, not usually Tieflings, or Dragon Born, unless i know it is a player that plays the role, not just "I am a dude with horns and i follow no law but my own..." or "I get to breath fire on people, For free." Typical Warlock player says oh cool i got all this magic. But it needs to be: "A warlock is defined by a pact with an otherworldly being. Sometimes the relationship between warlock and patron is like that of a cleric and a deity, though the beings that serve as patrons for warlocks are not gods. A warlock might lead a cult dedicated to a demon prince, an archdevil, or an utterly alien entity—beings not typically served by clerics. More often, though, the arrangement is similar to that between a master and an apprentice. The warlock learns and grows in power, at the cost of occasional services performed on the pat ron’s behalf." Many games blow this off. My feeling is.... If you have a pact with a demon, Paladins are going to come after you, burn you down, hang you by a rope and try to drown you. You do not enter into this bargain lightly. You will do things others can in good conscience, not agree with. It is not just "I level up and I get my new spell list." No one makes a pact with such a mighty patron if he or she doesn’t intend to use the power thus gained. Rather, the vast majority of warlocks spend their days in active pursuit of their goals, which typically means some kind of adventuring. Furthermore, the demands of their patrons drive warlocks towa rd adventure. And in a game where long rest is a week, many spell users will want to take a Warlock. So I am just kind of putting this info up front. OKAY. I will start a map and a setting, and in about a day or two throw up a recruiting post in LFG, once some of the details are more set. :)
Yeah It's probably best to stay away from those races. I would be fine with other races, but if something like a Tiefling is going to be in the world it's significant and will have consequences with players and NPCs alike. Your Infernal heritage would come in to play regularly and you would constantly be fighting the pull to evil.
yes. Many groups just blow that off. I would not. Working on a map.
Campaign Pitch: "The Lost Empire" The Lost Empire collapsed over 500 years ago, leaving crumbling castles, ruined cities, abandoned strongholds, nameless dungeons, and temples of shunned gods dotting the landscape. The communities that are the remnants of the Lost Empire have been formed and shaped by the merciless forces of history, and time. Ancient catastrophes, terrible wars, and great tragedies have delivered consequences that gave rise to other catastrophes and disasters. This endless cycle of death, rebirth, growth and decay has continued for thousands of years, across the Six Kingdoms, once united, now long ago sundered. Our tale of bold adventure begins in the Frigid Northron Lands, in the Human holding of Icerock, a hardy frontier settlement, founded upon granite cliffs, at the edge of the High Moors, overlooking the river valley below. Icerock is home to many hundred Human settlers. The countryside to the south, along the Baltia River is overrun by bandits and blackguards, as the Winter's Breath stalks the land. The Terrain is low mountains and Evergreen forest, And True mountains begin 6 days' hard march to the North and West. 9 days away to the Southeast along Trails, then roads, then finally the Auld Road, is the Auld City, once the center of the Empire. Still inhabited by the descendants of those who managed to survive the great catastrophes of the dimly remembered past.
