I almost always want to render the grid, but I almost never want anything snapping to it, especially on the map layer. Please give me a checkbox to invert the snapping logic (ie, only snap when holding Alt). Alt works, of course, but is suboptimal. My desktop environment interprets Alt-Click-Drag as "Move window", so I have to be careful to Click-Alt-Drag instead (I've disabled that feature for this reason, but I like that feature). Even with that off, the suggestion to just use the alt key when I don't want something to snap basically amounts to "Why don't you just tape the Alt key down?" Slight aside: If I use the ruler while holding Alt, I would like to see the "actual" distance between two points (meaning: what I'd see if the grid was disabled) rather than the grid distance. Holding Alt currently does keep the ruler from snapping, but it still calculates the distance as though it was snapped in.
