[GMT-6][FATE] Interest Check: Air Combat + Alternate History, FATE style

Edited 1393192669
Now recruiting players for a FATE game, most likely on tuesdays. Take on the role of mercenary fighter pilots in an alternate-history version of the 1960s where discovery of anti-gravity technology has made airships and super-sized airplanes the pre-eminent tools of both commerce and war. Historical cold-war era jets share the sky with airborne cruisers and aircraft carriers. In this world, World War II played out quite differently, and a secret network of sympathetic politicians, financiers, and ex-soldiers has allowed fascism to survive and thrive even after defeat in WWII. Even as the United States and the Soviet Union frantically expand their arsenals and construct ever-more outlandish and terrifying superweapons, dark conspiracies are coming to fruition in the forgotten places of the world. ... So, this game (working title: 'Fateful Skies') will be the sort of campaign that most RPGs wouldn't handle well, but FATE might have a chance of doing justice. There is some definite overlap with 'Spirit of the Century' and a vibrant, somewhat pulp feel, but less over-the-top. Major influences and sources of inspiration include 'Crimson Skies' (in fact, my original conception of this campaign was "A Crimson Skies-esque in the 60s"), 'Ace Combat', 'Iron Grip', and 'Black Sheep Squadron', with a little bit of Indiana Jones and old-school James Bond thrown in. I don't intend to run it as a parody or for camp value, though. This is a world of deep moral ambiguity, with serious, complex problems - it just happens that in this universe, some of those problems are resolvable with supersonic maneuvering and bursts of 20mm cannon fire. The game will probably be somewhere around 6 PM central U.S. time. Post in the thread if you're interested, or send me a PM. I already have one player with a completed character and ready to play - Two or three more would be enough to start with. If anyone's interested, I have a fairly detailed setting writeup and history on Pastebin, here: http://pastebin.com/27iARuuJ EDIT: Don't have FATE? Don't know what FATE is? No problem. The system is free and easy to learn.

I would agree, FATE has about the best chance of making something like this work. I'm definitely intrigued and like the write up you linked (I'm a huge Crimson Skies fan). Would like to hear some more details (what time and is it weekly/every other, etc...). I do own FATE Core and have played a few FATE games before the new Core came out, although it's been awhile. You say you have one player with a complete character? Could you share in general the type of character? Wouldn't want to duplicate to much (I'm considering a pilot who is also a grease monkey. He understands planes far more than people....)
This sounds awesome. Never used the FATE system but would be willing to learn it for this. Which day of the week are you thinking of playing? Also what state is the Canadian government in? Does it even still exist? (Probably going to make my character a Canadian)
Created the game on Roll20, here's the link to join: https://app.roll20.net/join/337586/Gvk1Eg I haven't made a firm decision on the status of Canada, though since Britain and the United States are somewhat less united in this timeline (though still nominally allies), Canada may be in a bit of a diplomatic tug-of-war between the two major anglophone powers. We can discuss it further - though I won't be as free-handed with setting building as some FATE games might be, I'm very willing to listen to suggestions. My initial impression is that Canada likely fought alongside the U.K. in WWII and is independent in 1964. But, if we want a less stable Canada in this timeline, historical curiosities like the King-Byng coup attempt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King-Byng_Affair ) provide ample fodder. My first player's character is a 'femme fatale' type with mostly piloting and social skills, so very little overlap with the kind of character you're thinking of, Rudedd.
