New to roll 20 and eager. Questions>>

Greetings folks. I would like to upgrade to paid membership with the idea that i can play using uploaded maps. Here are my questions and perhaps the forums can assist me or direct me on where to get answers. I want to start a campaign using Rise of the Runelords as a base and add other Paizo published adventure modules. Can I upload the maps into roll20 so we can play on them via this tool and have my group see play on them as well? << This is the single most important reason to upgrade. Can this be done and is there tools for me to learn how? I am waiting for Pathfinder 2 rules to get 'done'. Will roll20 be incorporating the new Pathfinder in its toolset? I am hopeful I can convert Paizo modules over My real dream is to take D&D 2nd edition modules the far back ones such as the A series (slavers) and go into the depths (D and S series). I have original paper modules still and can pdf them from scanner here at work. Id love to run these with roll20. If this is not the forum, please feel free to move this post. I was not sure where to post such a general question. Larsenex

None of 1, 2, or 3 require upgrading at all. 1. You can drag maps into a game as a free user. As a Plus or Pro subscriber, you get more storage space. As a Pro subscriber, you can move created map pages easily between multiple games, rather than needing to reconstruct them. 2. Roll20 has the Pathfinder 2 Play Test set up and available. Here's details: https://roll20.net/pfplaytest 3. You can upload any content you have for personal use. Enjoy!

You can certainly upload your maps into your games all on your own if the marketplace does not have them or if you do not wish to purchase them from the marketplace. Just be aware that anything you upload from your computer will count against your storage quota and only .jpg, .png, and some .gif types are supported. Pathfinder 2 is being playtested right now on roll20 but I can not say when or if the official ruleset will be incorporated into the compendium. You can upload your modules but understand that any scans you do will need to be in jpg or png (tokens for the most part) format. When pdfs (single page at a time) are uploaded, they are converted into jpg format. If you are going to use the text also, you will need to type all that out in the handouts and such. Lots of work. You can do all this in your current level but going up in subscriptions will give you additional features to play with.
Wow, Thank you! This is REALLY helpful. I believe in supporting folks and the system they created by subscribing. I have played a long time as I am sure most here have as well. The roll20 system is new to me but seems amazing. At this stage in life my best friends who want to play are scattered around the country. This tool would bring us all back together. .. What are tokens?

Tokens are digital miniatures.
Thanks much. You folks are very helpful. Is there guides I can view/watch at lunch on how to get started? I know this may be a can of worms to ask but is Fantasy grounds worth considering?

There is a tutorial app on the wiki , but it's more interactive than a video. The videos on this page are aimed more at the beginner to tabletop RPGs, but do have a Roll20 spin. Your best bet is to go to the Roll20 Youtube page and look at the Playlists. some of them are specially curated to showcase instructional videos. As for Fantasy Grounds, it would be best to ask on their forums why people use it.

I believe its against the rules here to discuss the merits of competing products like FG, so people cant give advice about that. Regarding your other question: there are a LOT of tutorial videos on youtube about how to use roll20, the channel Taking 20 has a bunch of really good ones from the basics up to advanced uses.

To clarify, it's not that discussing other products is forbidden, it's that discussing anything outside of the context of Roll20 is considered off-topic and closed or deleted. The forums are very focused on Roll20.
Thank you for the quick responses!
When working with maps or say you have a game you are doing. Its the heat of combat. Map is out tokens on board and bam its 11pm. Game needs to end right there but will be picked up again in 2 days. Will your 'work' be saved or will you have to reset everything the way it was including condition modifiers?

Everything is synchronized to the cloud. As long as there isn't a little red box at the top of the screen telling you it's lost connectivity, everything you or anyone else does will be preserved for next time, just as you left it. I have games that are 5 years old that are still the way they were the last time I played them.

The state of the game is retained, when you log off. Nothing changes until you or one of your players log back in and move something.
This community has been amazing. I was considering Fantasy Grounds but roll20 really seems to be folks preferred. With all this said I want you to give a bit of advice. I am coming back to being a DM using roll20 for the vast majority of things as my friends are very far way. I will be playing with just two others. Each of them are vets to D&D/Pathfinder and many other games. I participated in one of their groups games and the DM has very vague rudimentary use of roll20, just for video/chat and no use of maps or scale/distances. I knew immediately that I could make a large use of this tool and well here I am. Now here is my dilemma > i want to start with roll20 but I want it literally in the new Pathfinder 2 ruleset. The DL we have is a bit rough but I think i can work with it. I was going to use Golarion. I am familiar with that world. I wanted to start learning by doing and first build the town the group hails from. I was going to be a bit strict this game and keep everyone as having lived either in this town or very close by so the reason they all know each other is well they grew up. All must be of good alignment, and must be core classes and races. I need to build the town out and a nearby underground complex, I really wanted to hook into the Emerald tower as a base adventure adventure but perhaps something less epic. Now, with all that in mind where would you start? I know we will not play at least until spring next year but i wanted to get some work down now. Pretty sure Aaron has spend countless (see 100's) of hours prepping adventures. If I have Orc Tokens on the map and my party wants to engage them are there ways to designate attacks+dmg vrs both? Again I am going to move up to pro likely tomorrow and get started. I also have been viewing the crash course on roll20 but the young lady literally started out with tokens and purchasable which you really don't realize you must have. rambling off.... If you haven't done so already, I'd suggest going through the Roll20 Tutorial just to get a good grounding in the system and its capabilities. Watching those tutorial videos will help also. So will asking questions of the community, we love that! I would suggest setting up the simplest mock battle you can, 1 PC and 1 Monster, and then running through the engagement with just you manipulating all characters. That will give you a feel for both sides of the table and likely some idea of where to go next. Then I'd look at creating your town. Look at the level of detail you need. If you only need social encounters, there's no reason to build a tactical scale map, or even a map at all. Could just be a picture of a town and some boxes around it for where people are currently, or possible a picture and some small vignettes containing tactical areas for the bar, or jail or whatever. Sky's the limit. =D Then I'd look at building a dungeon. Make something with a few rooms. Add dynamic lighting, people with monsters, experiment with the different layers. Make a test account to log in as and run a PC around exploring how the Dynamic Lighting works and what the player experience is. Try different things with lights and settings and the like. By that point, you should feel pretty competent with doing just about anything on Roll20 that you need to do. And of course, ask questions along the way, maybe make a record of your adventures in learning Roll20, something to be a guide to others. One other thing you could consider is getting in a pickup game with some new people, just to see how things go from the player side, and what other GMs do. It can take a while to find something that matches up. Take Phnord up on his invite to the Color Animal Inn. =D Hope that helps!
